InactiveMyles gave up the bottle at 7 months and he was eating next to nothing! I managed to keep him alive by feeding him a big bowl of oatmeal in the morning with 8 ounces of formula or breast milk, and then he drank one bottle at bedtime. In between he only ate a few jars of baby food all day and I spoon fed him 4 ounces of formula once per day.
I know Trace can’t have oatmeal, but is there any type of grain cereal that he can have that you can add lots of formula to?

InactiveThat’s too bad. That’s what I was thinking though…if there was something he could eat that could be made with neocate. If I think of anything else I’ll let you know.

InactiveLori, not sure if you are stilll around but here is a direct response to what you posted:
“Basically: you can get e-coli and salmonella from LOTS of things, and the risk from raw milk from healthy pastured cows, compared to the risk from, say, unwashed spinach grown in a field fertilized with manure from factory-farmed cows is very low. Yes, there is a risk of food-borne illness, but what they don’t tell you is that there is ALSO a risk of bacteria in pasteurized milk – it can be contaminated after pasteurization by dirty equipment. It’s food. It can be contaminated. Just like pretty much everything else we eat. Singling out raw milk is actually pretty ridiculous.
Good raw milk from healthy, pastured cows is actually protective against a wide variety of bacteria, because it contains enzymes to counteract them, much like breastmilk.
I would NOT trust raw milk, however, from confined cows. Their diets are unhealthy for them and they frequently are diseased. It is very true that THIS kind of milk does carry an unacceptable disease risk. However, mainstream media and bureaucrats rarely make the distinction between milk from healthy pastured cows and milk from disease-ridden confined cows – I guess that’s just too much thinking for their little brains, so they lump it all in together and because SOME of it IS unsafe, it’s easier to put a blanket “unsafe” label on all raw milk.”

Keymasternatalia,
you can get blackstrap molasses at a health food supermarket- I buy organic
what carbs does he eat? I’d say to load them up w/ oil…also can he eat any kind of pasta? enriched pastas have more protein then you would think…
does he eat rice? can you make a rice pudding type of food with almond milk or even neocate or rice milk as the liquid? add in some molasses and perhaps some oil and fruit puree?
how about beans? then there’s: rice and beans, refried beans (shmooshed beans) slathered on rice bread, smooshed/mixed into rice noodles
egg yolk- you can make french toast with it w/ the rice bread- cook it in oil in the pan, & then slather almond butter mixed w/ molasses all over it- or slather avocado on it
scrambled egg yolk w/ broccoli mixed in
he’s over a year, how about ‘safe’ fish: here’s a chart- scroll down: http://www.checnet.org/healthehouse/education/quicklist-deta il.asp?Main_ID=716
I found fishsticks at whole foods using this chart- you just have to read ingredients to see if the breading, etc have other things in it…but you could certainly cook some of your own fish…
how about other fruits? papya? mango? grapes cut into tiny pieces?
squash? green beans?
this is generally what he eats:
avacodo
banana
applesauce
blueberries
gluten free chicken nuggets
ham
rice bread
almond butter
rice noodles
broccoli
sweet potato
fruit smoothies
i try to add flax seed oil to smoothieshellbennt2007-6-4 15:17:11

Inactivelauren-how is the goats milk going?
i am starting to feel better about his fat/protein intake on the rice milk. i make sure he gets avacodo every day as well as flax seed oil. for protein he usually gets gluten free/dairy free/soy free nuggets or ham. im also going to try the gluten free fish sticks. i also discovered this new grain at Trader Joes called Quinoa which has a lot of protein. im just thinking of a way that i can prepare it so it will be flavorfull. i dont think he would like it just plain because he wont eat plain rice or plain rice pasta.
i am really worried about giving Trace eggs, bc if he does have issues with the whites, i cant gaurantee that the yolk didnt come into contact wtih it….are you still giving Shane yolks?
Trace does eat rice pasta which i put olive oil in. it had no flavor..i was trying to think of what i could add to it…obviously not spaghetti sauce as tomatoes are horrible for reflux, plus they contain soy…so i mixed in some applesauce and cinnamon and he ate that.

Keymasteryou don’t have carrots on his list- I used to used pureed carrots as sauce for pasta- but you could mix anything with the pasta- beans, sweet potatos, squash whatever…

Inactiveumm the goats is going o.k. not much signs of reflux.. just his restlessness STILL. soo i posted about that..
and no i havnt given shane the yolk since his test.. but i think i will.
and thats great he’ll eat pasta.. shane wont eat anything mushy.
and quinoa is great… just tasteless..
and i also did grill cheese tonight! with goats cheese.. you can do rice cheese!
hmm.. seems like you have all the ideas and i am sure he will do fine! i am still not sure what i am going to do though!

InactiveNatalia: With such a limited diet (milk/soy/gluten) I think it would be really hard to get enough calories into him. I wonder if something else is going on that he just dropped the bottle? When Carson is really tired he will take it at night. If he vomits during the day, then I give him a Neocate/rice milk bottle before nap also. With Carson, he doesn’t get enough calories without the Neocate. I wonder if you should call your doc/nutritionist and let them know he has dropped it? Did you try several nights in a row? It would be great not to have to pay for the Neocate but I know it is giving him what he doesn’t get with his intolerances.
Just makes me nervous that he dropped his big source of nutrition!! You little stinker, Trace!June 4, 2007 at 5:16 pm #35592Anonymous
Inactiveohh and lentils! and great source of protien.. almost forgot that one.

InactiveBrenda-he still takes a night time bottle. i know its weird that he suddenly doesnt want the neocate. its like now that he has disovered food, he is like heck with the neocate crap lol!
we currently dont have a ped 🙁 we are looking for one. i am guessing i need a referral for a nutritionist/dietician?
lauren, pardon me i am ingorant when it comes to food/cooking…i am learning slowly…what is rice cheese and lentils?
June 4, 2007 at 5:33 pm #35596hellbennt
Keymasterhttp://www.chreese.com/packets.itml
lentils are a bean. there are red beans, black beans, kidney beans, pinto beans, chick peas, also known as garbonzo beans, cannelli beans, & probably more

I buy organic canned beans, but you can buy them dry in a bag & follow the cooking instructions. You could drain then from the can and if trace can have chicken, you could buy organic chicken broth or even vegetable broth & cook the beans. then you could add the beans to quinoa, rice pasta or rice bread. You can have trace try & eat them one at a time, too, from his tray/plate. or cook them up until they get mushy/stew like. you can also put them in a blender & then you can mix them in with things.

InactiveIf he still takes a night time bottle, that should be around 25 calories per ounce plus if you are mixing it with rice milk – should be 228 calories if he takes 6 ounces, so that is great! The Neocate information I have shows that it is much more than just calories for these little ones that can’t have milk/soy. I have gotten a lot of good recipies at http://www.kidswithfoodallergies.org. It is $25 per year but I explained about the Neocate and she said they have several Neocate families to whom they give free memberships bk they know that we spend a lot of money on Neocate. Give it a look!
