InactiveI tried to buy all organic only one time, and afterwards we didn’t have enough money left over for the week to buy anything else. I had to borrow money to buy formula and diapers. For families like mine, it’s not an option, and sometimes threads like this make me feel very bad for not being able to afford the “best” for my kids……and I firmily believe that my kids are just as healthy as they would be if they had eaten organic food from day one.

InactiveAidansmom79,
I wasnt trying to imply that anyone is wrong for making the choices they make for their children or that Im doing better for my child than you are for yours because I do organic and you do not. I have other kids that I raised (as you can tell from my siggy!) that I didnt go the organic route and theyre just fine. My son Nicholas developed autism-like symptoms because he reacted differently to his environment, vaccines, his foods, his bath products, etc etc etc than his siblings…..
I just did alot of research over the last few years and I try to share the things I find out with others to inform them. I dont try to tell anyone what to do, EVER. I dont judge, and I dont mean to make anyone feel bad. I apologize if thats how it made you feel but I was asked a question so I answered.
Ellen
p.s. Your Aidan is adorable!!!!

InactiveIt is so sad that it costs so much to do organic. I would also love to do organic, but I just can’t afford it. It is amazing to me that it costs so much more for a product that has less ingredients in it. If America wants to be healthier I think we should work on that. In the mean time I do the best I can by washing my fruits and veggies in vinegar. I have to say I am suprised about finding out how many things have prypolene glycol in them. I went on the internet and sure enough it is antifreeze. Of course, they say it is safe because of the small amt. If you go around your house though and see how many things you use daily with the stuff in it it def. makes you wonder. Honestly it makes me down right mad!
Of course, as usual what can I do about it? I feel so trapped. Okay enough already. I am now going to go make breakfast that has who knows what in it. UGH!

Inactiveyes, it is hard to afford organic! but, i do agree to its many benifits.. but i am sure most kids including myself have grown up fine and didnt do organic. i am trying to do mostly organic with shane as well.. i figured that if i could stop alimentum, we could afford it. soo we are in the process of getting him on goodstart.. and so far so good.. than i would eventually love the organic formula.. or if we cant go that route, just wait until organic whole milk. but i have heard that raw whole milk is even better!
well, i guess there can always be more and more we can do, but we can’t drive ourselfs crazy at the same time.. my husband isnt as organic believing as i am, and he thinks i am “too extreme” at times
😉
November 21, 2006 at 8:45 am #18593Anonymous
InactiveExactly…we can only do what we can do…..
I try not to drive myself crazy about it either…..I do what I can when I can…..
I know some moms that think I am wrong for having Aidan on Nutramigen, Prilosec, and Axid but he needs it……theyre a tad bit loopy about the whole organic thing…they wont evn buy their kids clothes from the store….they spend like $40 0n a t-shirt made with natural fibers….NUTS….

Inactivei know! part of me starts to feel really bad that he is on medication.. because you can read something about everything.. and believe me i have read scary things about reflux meds, and than i think about taking him off.. but, we have to choose what things we are going to believe and not worry about them i guess… or we will really will drive ourselves crazy.. its soo hard to get a healthy medium.. but your right ~we do what we can~

InactiveWe’re in the same boat as a lot of you. I would love to buy everything organic if I could afford it. GMO, etc is some scary stuff. I think it’s awesome that even Wal-mart has come out with so many new organic products which are somewhat more affordable. I think we’re slowly moving in the right direction (I hope), as far as more & more things being organic. We just do the best we can as well. We buy Tom’s of Maine toothpaste & a few other things.

Inactivesorry if I came off as rude!!! and ty ellen, I think it’s b/c my sister in law is here for the holiday and she’s a vegan and nutritionist and has been flipping out for 2 days b/c we don’t buy organic (except for yo-baby, I do buy that, it’s the only baby yogurt out there, ) I heard somewhere that walmart is coming out with a line of organics? That I think we could afford! (although in my frustration at the farmers market a while back when trying to find organic produce we could afford, my older son asked what organic meany and I replied “expensive”
)Med wise, I’m a big believer in both conventional and non conventional meds, my older son takes meds for ocd and anxiety/ panic attacks, but also natural otc sleep meds (melatonin). I DO suck it up and buy gripe wate for Aidan….it seems to really help his gas (non charcoal).
I think that as the years go by more and more organic things will be available at local grocery stores for not so much$$, at least I hope so. Honetly I think the post I made was just left over annoyance at my sister in law, and I really do apologize!!!!!
oh, Ellen, they thought that at one point my oldest was somewhere on the Autism spectrum before the ocd dx (he does have a few of the “criteria”). And I just found this website..john hopkins something that lists thermisol and mercury free vacinations ( I’ll post it if I can find it again if anyone want’s to take a look) which I think I will try to get at Aidan’s next appt (only a few select “brands” make them)
This is one long post, know I’m rambling! sorry guys!!!
if anyone know any good otc herbal remedies for ear pain I’d LOVE LOVE to know!!! Motrin has stopped working for him….I tried similasin (sp?) but not sure it did any good….
Again I’m sorry for the misdirected crankiness

InactiveAidansmom79,
I didnt think you were coming off as rude…..I just thought you thought I was lecturing you and everyone else which I wasnt……I just like sharing info that I have come across through all my research in trying to find out why and how with my son Nicholas…..
I was amazed and I do get overzealous because I just dont want what happened to us to happen to anyone else….its been so hard for us and my son is at a point after yrs of treatments and behavioral interventions where he will make friends and learn and is very affectionate (he used to scream when anyone touched him)
With that, I am going to say this..please research before you use ANY vaccine….our kids have one strike against them with their reflux….this makes them more susceptible to reactions to vaccines….
Let me explain why I say this…thimerosal is a big issue with vaccines and as of right now most vaccines are listed as “thimerosal-free” but in reality they arent……A professor/researcher from the University of KEntucky named Dr Boyd Haley (another one of my heroes) took vials of vaccines that were labelled mercury free and tested them….well surprisingly, they were in fact NOT free of the ethylmercury based preservative…..The thing is, thimerosal is used in the manufacturing process for most vaccines (Except live virus ones like the MMR) and then it is removed at the end of the process…..it is supposed to inhibit bacterial growth….well one the thimerosal is in the vaccine the process binds the mercury to the rest of the ingredients in the vaccine….the vaccine goes through a process similar to chelation to remove the preservative but it is bound to the vaccine ingredients sothat some of it remains…..since no neurotoxicity level of thimerosal was ever established, no one can say that the amount left over isnt toxic in some children and babies……You can see this info here: http://www.hapihealth.com/hapi/welcome.html Listed under: PRESS RELEASE
August 12, 2004
Vaccines Are Not Mercury FreeAlso, the MMR which is a live virus vaccine cannot have thimerosal in it because the preservative would kill the attenuated (weakened) viruses….yet my son reacted to the MMR and has a host of autoimmune and gut problems……
Other preservatives are used in the vaccines in place of thimerosal which are just as toxic like 2-PE (2-phenoxyethanol) amongst others….also aluminum is in vaccines as an adjuvant to stimulate or exaggerate our bodies immune response to the vaccine….
A good website to go look at for info is http://www.vaclib.org and http://www.thinktwice.com ……I have more so if youd like more info let me know

InactiveHmmm…I’m glad I’m not the only one who “dreams” of an all organic diet for her little ones. Jill, I did what you did for a while….tried to buy mostly organic and by the third week of the month I was out of money and had to charge groceries.
It’s depressing. I feel guilty about everything I buy that isn’t organic, but if I can’t afford it, I can’t afford it. I grasping hope now that Walmart is getting in on the organic foods thing, that we will one day be able to afford a more organic diet. For Aidan’s ear pain, there something they can give them at the doctors’s office…drops that actually numb the pain. My friend’s daughter had them and she said it worked great. Maybe they can give you a prescription for it or let you bring him in for a few drops. I know this isn’t natural…but it might help him feel better.
Natalia, does vinegar remove pesticides from produce?
Ellen, Thanks for the link. I do buy Tom’s of Maine toothpaste as well. I was confused about the carageenan, though. I tought I read that it was a carcinogen…but it can be safe? How do you know if it’s natural or synthetic. I imagine Tom’s would use natural…

Inactivethanks for that info ellen!!!
i know that if i had a discussion about this with my doctor, she would look at me like i was looney.
anyway, we have an appt dec 19th for 6 month shots, however i am going to cancel that. do i need to give the docs office any paperwork for exemption reasons?christine, i think justicesmom said the thing about the vinegar. i am curiuos about that as well.

Inactivetx ellen for the vaccine info( I like anyone from The University of Kentucky, I was born in Louisville
)! I bought that FIT veggie and fruit wash, and that stuff made everything taste like crap (no matter how long I washed it off)!!! I’d love to know if vinegar does the same type of thing without leaving a nasty taste behind!!!-about the belladona and chamomela(sp?) are those things that are in ear drops like the similasin or are they taken orally as in extracts? They didn’t mention anything about numbing drops I’ll call after the holidays if he gets any worse! TY TY!!Aidansmom792006-11-21 14:5:26

InactiveI sorry but I can not be quiet about this. I have to post some of our old topics about this issue of vaccines, I believe that this needs to be heard again, so that everyone that reeds this post does not feel lie a horrible person for vaccinating their child. I personally am a true believer in vaccines and as a parent of a child with an immunosuppressed child who does not effectively respond to vaccines, I strongly support that children need to be vaccinated. Children DIE from these illnesses.
The following is a quote from another post that my good friend Lauren posted.
Lauren wrote:
OKAY…this may not mix well with
some of you, BUT, I am very much FOR vaccines, & vaccines ON TIME.
Trust me, I have done the research. You will be hard-pressed to find a true
reputable source that connects autism to vaccines. There simply are no
solid studies on this–in fact the only studies done by reliable
sources have disproven the theory. Again, I have done A LOT of
research in this area. When Emma was younger, she was very
disconnected as an infant & we felt she may have autism (concerns
from our docs too). I read all I could, especially when it came time
to get vaccines. My doctor even gave me the choice about the MMR, but
we discussed it & she agreed there was no concrete medical
documentation connecting autism to MMR or any other vaccine. Dh &
I agreed that even if a small risk of autism may exist, or a small risk
that Emma’s situation could become slightly worse from a vaccine, it
was much better than Emma getting sick or dying from mumps, measles, or
rubella. As Emma gets older, & she faces different
medical challenges including asthma, I appreciate the fact that we do
have these vaccines even more. Emma’s immune system would NOT be able
to handle any of those diseases. She faces enough challenges, & if
there is something I can do proactively to help, you bet I’m going to
do it! How could I ever sleep at night if Emma got sick because I
chose not to give her a well-proven vaccine??????I do just want to decifer the difference
between a parent OPTING to not have their child vaccinated AND a
child’s health issues (i.e. seizures, etc.) preventing them from
receiving a vaccine at the appropriate time. Do the research, talk to
your docs.More info on Immunizations and autism:
