Keymasterzantac should be given at least 2hrs serperate, if not more (2-5hrs) , from the prevacid- you can give mylanta & zantac together, or close together- there’s no real ‘set’ dose on mylanta- if you give too much you’ll see loose stools…

InactiveHow does Mylanta work? I never used that before. How would the Zantac work with the prevacid?
Usually Henry takes a 1 hour nap in the morning. The afternoon nap is tougher. On a good day he sleeps 2-3 hours in the afternoon. On a bad day he wakes screaming every thirty minutes.
People keep telling me they think Henry is “just bored.” He DOES do better in novel situations, or at the mall or around others; however, I WISH it was that simple!

InactiveHi again Ruby,
I was wondering…you said he sleeps well at night (that’s great!!). How about during the day? Does he take any good naps? Could he just be over tired?
Have you tried Mylanta Cherry Supreme before feedings?

If it is pain it is NOT ‘just how he is’ & you’ll have to hang in there and continue to be the best advocate you can be for your son, just like you’re doing now! You can do it, mama!
Do you have any zantac? can you get some?
Can you find another ped maybe, one who will work with you?

InactiveChristine,
Thank you for asking about Henry. I really don’t know what to do. I’ve exhausted our avenues here for doctors. My husband feels perhaps we should just accept this is how Henry is and know that eventually he will grow out of it.
To sum it up: he doesn’t spit up as much as he used to, he is gaining weight fine, and he sleeps through the night. Afternoons and evenings he is extremely cranky to hysterical. Maybe what is left is colic? I just hope it isn’t his personality that is left!!
Thanks for asking!

InactiveHi Ruby, I was told to avoid all aftificial sweetners while pregnant and nursing. I don’t know if it contributes to his irritability or not, though.
Is Henry better lately??? Are you going to try find another doctor to increase his Prevacid dose?
Is he always cranky at the same time? I think in another post you said it was afternoon time.
I really feel for you
and I hope you get to the bottom of it soon, and that Henry will be feeling better.ndrose2006-4-9 16:36:24

InactiveI don’t have much experience with cortaid, but I use Calendula Cream by California Baby on my son’s serious dry patches and this clears it right up, if you are looking for a more natural product. I actually started using only California Baby products on his skin because they contain no nut oils like a lot of baby products do, and he hasn’t had near the amount of dry skin or cradle cap he did in the beginning.

KeymasterI did not remove aspertame or any artificial sweetner, but I didn’t/drink a lot of it…maybe one drink a day, if that even…
when is the crankiness? if it’s the sweetner, my guess is that you’d see a reaction 3 to 4 hrs after drinking the tea. If you see this reaction on a regular basis then it might be the tea…otherwise, it could be something else, or it could have nothing to do w/ what you’ve eaten…it can be so hard…oh yeah, solutabs have aspertame, too…

I, of course, feel perhaps I should eliminate that one diet iced tea I drink each day. . . .because one can never give up too much from one’s diet (not that I have a bad attitude or anything. . . .:0) I just feel I need to get to the bottom of all this crankiness without doing the elecare trial.

InactiveI think I ate too much icecream and pizza when I was pregnant! Although I will add (even though I don’t think this is the link) that I had antibiotics for group b strep.
When Henry was first born (before I knew he had reflux) I thought all his crying was because I had used fertility drugs that I created a soul that simply didn’t want to be here. The rigors of having a reflux baby can send your thinking to strange places!

InactiveSarah, I’m sure this doesn’t help any, but Hailey is a couple of weeks older than Isaac, and she is now only taking 12-15 ounces of formula, and also no solids. How much rice cereal are you adding per bottle? What concentration is the formula? He may be getting more calories than you think. As far as Hailey goes, no one here is concerned, though they do say that this is low intake for her age (10 months). I always like to remind myself that if she was still breastfeeding, i would have no idea what her intake was. So as long as they are content when taking bottles and exhibiting normal feeding behaviour, I try to accept it as best I can (though it’s certainly hard). Hopefully Isaac (and Hailey) start to eat soon!

Keymasterare you breastfeeding?
how DARE
this doctor recommend you stop when you clearly do not think it is a milk issue!!!!
I breastfed jonah, I did the elimination diet, and after that I did not believe it was a ‘milk’ issue – he never showed any of the signs (he always had ‘regular’ breast fed baby stools – no blood, no mucous, no rash, no nothing) of mspi or allergy
thank goodness my ped gi was totally supportive of my breastfeeding !!!
so to sum up my own humble opinion:
keep breastfeeding & find another doctor!!!!!
ps: I just calculated for you a conservative dose of prevacid & it’s 21mgs per day total not 15!!!!

InactiveRuby,
I’m so sorry that your GI appointment was such a bust! And believe me when I tell you that I can sympathize with you. I’ve been to many doctors armed with my Marci-kids info, and if any of them have agreed to look at it, they’ve all responded like your GI. In December, we waited 3 months to see a pediatric psychiatrist for Hailey’s feeding and no one would do anything until then- that was a major bust! Then we waited over 3 months to see a new GI (who did nothing) but ordered a scope (for which we are waiting at least another 3 months). And all the time in between I was counting down the days to these appointments hoping they would answer our prayers and help my child. So believe me when I tell you, I understand your frustration and your sadness.
I agree with trying to get a new doctor, though I know it’s not an easy task. I say this because you need someone who will be agressive in terms of treating your child. Don’t make the same mistakes that I did. I waited too long with a doctor who was ultra conservative, and it only compounded our problems to the point we’re at now. I would also be leary of anyone who told you to give up breastfeeding (if you don’t want to) as the answer to solving your sons reflux. This always frustrates me, and I really think it’s just a doctors way to buy some time and get you out of the office. I don’t mean that to be offensive. Many people might disagree with me though. But it just seems crazy to me- breast milk is supposed to be very good for them and I agree with you that if it was an allergy he would likely be cranky all day or around feeding times.
I hope this doesn’t discourage you, but on top of her reflux, Hailey was an inconsolable screaming mess for the first 6 months of her life and needed to be held 24 hours a day. It was very challenging, to say the least, and what made me so mad was that docs were quick to dismiss her behaviour as colic until she was over 6 months.
In the meantime, could you get someone to prescribe you a dose of Zantac or something for breakthrough relief in the afternoon? I also hate to admit this, but I increased Hailey’s dose myself, and then when I went to my new doc, I told him that this was her dose and could he write me a repeat. Well he did. I sincerely hope that you get some relief for your son. Until then, hang in there. We all know what you’re going through.
