I have been pumping for just over 6 months…as well as supplementing…my LO is just over 6 months and I am wondering if Cow’s milk/Milk period is bothering. I have completely eliminated dairy from my diet…she is very hyperactive, constantly sneezing, watery eyes, has a lot of gas, seems to have stomach problems in general. She has been suffering from reflux since about 2 months old. Should I switch to SOY formula and keep pumping of course as I know milk can really irritate reflux babies.
Topic: multiple new issues!
I’m hoping Norah won’t wake crying so I can write this so I’ll TRY to be brief– but it’s hard for me!!! I’m suffering big time with plugged ducts ….over and over every three days for three weeks. I’ve been treating them with scalding hot baths, drinking apple cider vinegar, the list goes on and on. I’m finishing a five day treatment of two baths per day after the last plugged duct cleared but I’m terrified it will come back again. Now I also have some thrush/yeast infection symptoms (nipple pain, strange looking parts of the nipple, white spot on the nipple). Has anyone ever had plugged ducts that you could link to yeast? I read about this on kellymom.com — as a possible link and my lac consultant basically gave me the whole, oh you can read all sorts of scary things on the internet, there is no link between the two. What do you guys think?
Simultaneously, Norah has been waking every two hours for hte same period of time and is much fussier. Nursing more frequently is okay for now, since it helps with the plugged ducts, but I am going nuts between the two things trying to figure out what is going on with her. If thrush is an issue, could thrush cause her to wake like that (I can’t get into her mouth to see if there are white spots, but she’s had diaper rash on and off this past week, which she generally doesn’t have)? Any other suggestions for that kind of night waking? She had been sleeping 8-10 hours straight. I’ve been nursing her alone in my room (when I can, when Lucas cooperates!) and trying to really get the most out of each feeding, so I can’t imagine that she’s hungry/not eating enough during the day. she also seems uncomfortable when she wakes. She’s on a high dose of zegerid nad now i’m wondering if she could be developing food issues that weren’t present two months ago??? Am I losing my mind wondering all these things from lack of sleep, or has anyone got some ideas to go along with this?
any suggestions for keeping plugs at bay….I’m already on a super low fat diet, no dairy and not a lot of other fat right now and I’m avoiding taking lecithin because mine was all soy based and Norah’s reacting terribly to soy products, even soy lecithin it seems. I’m drinking apple cider vinegar two time a day and have been doing 45 min – 1 hour long scalding hot baths two times a day. Yikes. I’m nursing her upside down for lack of a better term, as well, to clear the area because it’s at the top of my breast. Help! I’m going nutso a bit here.
Topic: Too Late??
Hi,
I am new to this website and an blown away by all the helpful advice and the huge group of people who actually share my experience. I am sick to death and really angry with all the people who told me, “all babies spit up”.
So, here are my issues. I would appreciate any and all advice that you can spare a moment to send.
1) GUILT. I think my poor little guy, now 6.5 months old and very big, was undermedicated for the last 5 months. I feel so awful about not being able to help him properly. He has had to fight and fight to eat properly, to sleep properly and to just try to enjoy his little life, which has only been characterized by discomfort. I pretty much carried him for 12-14 hours a day for 4.5 straight months, because I didn’t know what else to do. The absolute worst days of my life were watching him go through round and round of eating, throwing up, soothing his tummy by eating tiny dribbles of milk for an hour, trying desperately to fall asleep but unable to when he started throwing up again. THis would go on for seven straight hours. How do I start to feel good not guilty about caring for him?
2) MEDS. He has been on Zantac which has mostly worked. He is also on domperidone to help increase motility as he is extremely slow to digest his food. He has thrown up food 4.5 hours after eating it. THe great difficulty has been making sure he does not throw the meds up. I cannot understand why all the meds for babies who vomit excessively are given orally. Does anyone know of another method? Are there suppositories? Are there ones that can be absorbed through the skin? At this age, what is the best medicine for acid suppression? Is there an ant-acid I should ask the pediatrician about? He seems to worst first thing in the morning after breastfeeding when he still arches away from me, crying and writhing.
3) FOOD. He has started solids which has caused more vomiting because the muscles he uses to have a bowel movement is pushing food out of his stomach instead. I have made his food as watery as possible. He has terrible gas from rice, apples, pears and peaches. Any suggestions as to good foods for a gassy, air swallowing gerdling?
4) SLEEP. My little guy has pretty much been sleep deprived for the last 5 months. He has gotten 9-11 hours in each 24 hour period. I would appreciate any advice on increasing sleep time, and ways to increase his napping, which is his big problem.
5) LOST FRIENDS AND FAMILY. Anyone know how to reconnect with people who used to be in your life, but because you have spent the last six months completely house bound are no longer there? I didn’t have time most days to eat or go to the bathroom because my little guy needed constant attention, nevermind phone anyone.
6) DOCTORS. Be careful! We have had both good and bad. In general, they are good for the medications, but know absolutely nothing about day to day care of a gerdling. The worst was a pediatric gastroenterologist who told us he does not believe in acid suppression because we don’t know if babies are in pain, and that my baby was just colicky. At least the regular pediatrician is great at recognizing babies expressions and noticed our guy grimacing when he vomited. Big surprise – that’s a sign of pain!
Thank you to all who have posted and shared their experiences. I don’t feel so completely isolated anymore.

Topic: Reflux in 4 year old?
My daughter (4 1/2) has just started taking Zantac in an effort to combat severe burping and nightwaking.
She has multiple food allegies — I bf her for the first 4 years with me on an elimination diet. For the first two years she got alomost all her calories from breastmilk. Around two a nutritionist calculated she was eating about 100 calories a day from solid food (mostly organic cheerios, still a major source of her calorie intake) and the rest was breastmilk.
She no longer tests poritive for some of her allergens, though will still have reactions — not anaphalyctic, but more long-term — 3 days of screaming, serious nightwaking for hours, rashes around both ends of the digestive system, etc.
We had her scoped at 2 1/2 and had an acid probe test, as well as a barium swallow test, and the Ped. GI we saw at that time did not find any problems. Despite the family history of reflux, no doctor has ever thought that it was her problem. However, we have noticed problem when she eating anything acidic — we always give her a Tums if she has tomato sauce. She’s extemely picky and only eats about 10 foods.
Now suddenly, at 4 1/2 she starts waking for hours every night with no change in diet, and she is burping all the time and compaining of pain in her throat. How could this happen so suddenly?
Or was it there all the time, and the breastfeeding was just treating the symptoms? (She has been weaned for 6 months. The burping started 3 weeks ago)
Topic: 19 month old reflux? Help!
My son has never slept well and was finally diagnosed with silent reflux at 11 months (he had a lot of signs but I didn’t know you could have reflux without a lot of spitting up: arching back after feeding, gagging then swallowing painfully , chronic mouth breathing, cough, runny nose, constantly begging to nurse). He went on Prevacid 15 mg. at night when he was 11 months old and we gave it to him for 3 months. Also we eliminated eggs and milk from his diet because an allergy test came back positive. During that period we weaned him from night nursing and we had 2 months of bliss when he awoke occasionally once, but sometimes went straight through until 4:00 am and we were grateful!
Then a repeat allergy test came back negative so we reintroduced all foods. Around the same time we tried going off the meds because the regular pediatrician convinced me that it had really been a nursing/limit setting issue not a reflux issue that was making him wake up. Unfortunately he also got the stomach flu a week after we stopped meds I nursed him at night for a few days because I was worried about dehydration (he wouldn’t drink at night from a cup) and my husband was out of town and I just got worried and exhausted and caved. Since then (in Sept.) he has awoken at least twice a night, sometimes more, but didn’t seem in pain until I tried weaning 3 weeks ago. Since Sept. we have not nursed at night but have responded to crying with soothing, hugs, etc. About 3 weeks ago I weaned him almost completely because the pediatrician thought that would help with sleep and eating solids. He increased his solids but his sleep got much, much worse. He went back to his waking 11-12 times a night rhythm on bad nights and 3-4 times a night on good nights. And he seemed in pain, he couldn’t get comfortable. He would even get out of bed and try lying on the hard floor. We accidently gave him a double dose of Prevacid one night (I didn’t know my husband had given him it already) and he slept until 4 am. So we asked the pediatric gastroenterologist if we could double dose and she said we could try it. We propped the crib and bed up and started meds. Immediately he seemed to be much more comfortable. Even with a new cold he only woke a couple of times and didn’t seem to be in pain and by the third day on 30 mg he was sleeping until between 4:10 and 5:20 with 1-2 night awakenings on a couple of nights and some nights with none! We were so excited, but then I went on a trip and his sleep while I was gone and sleeping at grandmas and now that I’m home is awful again (tons of night awakenings). Since we’ve doubled the meds it is not as clear that he’s in pain (no sharp screams with a refusal to lie down) but on the bad nights he seems genuinely uncomfortable and as always snores, coughs, mouth breaths etc.. We have an appt. In 2 weeks to see the specialist again (we’ve been on waiting list for 2 weeks already).
So to summarize, after we doubled the meds he had 8 good nights and 4 bad nights, with all the bad nights coming during or after my trip. I’m not nursing except at bedtime, and I do not nurse to sleep. I could eliminate that feeding but I’m concerned that reducing the breast milk and increasing the solids so dramatically is why the reflux came back and I’d hate to eliminate the milk completely if it’s acting as an antacid.
I am so confused. Does he have reflux for sure? Does he also have sleep dependencies? I don’t want to let him CIO if he’s in pain. We’ve never had a “test” done for reflux, they don’t do that kind of test here in Hawaii. Any ideas?
Thank you!

Hello again,
Just got back from the GI appointment at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin (supposedly ranked #5 in the nation for their GI program). Cora has been having mucusy stools since 2 weeks. They had blood in them while I was still on dairy but none since. Since then, I’ve eliminated dairy, eggs, and tomatoes. Doc looked at her stools and did an occult blood test. There were no traces of blood and he said while the stool was looser and slimier, it might just be her. He told me to keep breastfeeding and doing what I’m doing. If I want to try eliminating soy, he said I could, but he doubts I’d see much of a difference.
Now, I know this GI clinic is top rated in the area but a few things he said was worrisome. First he said when removing an allergen, it only takes four days to heal and see a difference. Obviously, I know that’s untrue. He also didn’t think her diapers were that mucusy. Going off pictures I saw on old threads, they looked pretty darn similar. He isn’t concerned in the least. My baby likes to nurse A LOT and is fussy, but not overly. Weight gain had been 1 lb per 3 weeks but now it’s slowed to 1 lb per 4 weeks. I’m wondering if I should still be eliminating foods. I’m thinking soy might be a good idea, but that eliminates a lot of what I eat.
My first daughter never slept. Cora sleeps six hours a night no problem and takes two 1 1/2 – 2 hour naps during the day. I’m wondering if I’m finding issues where there really are none.
Any thoughts? I hate to be a hypochondriac but I’m a worrier by nature.
Help please.Kathy
P.S. According to Pedi GI, there is a new study that came out in the last three weeks. They gave one group of reflux kids meds and the other placebos and they found that there was no difference in esophagitus in the groups. OBVIOUSLY, I think the study is a bunch of crap, but I wanted to let everyone know since the new recommendation in the report was no to prescribe drugs to little ones since they make no difference. And that is awful, since I know my first DEFINITELY needed them.
