Topic: MSPI..and maybe egg…
Cooper is about 4.5 months old, around three months we noticed that his cheeks were getting really red each time he ate, he is only breastfeed. Soon, his stools changed from green and seedy to a more olive brown and very mucusy, then eventually he had little dark lines the size of rice, which were tested and came back negative for blood. The pediatrician, who is an adult allergy specialist, did a skin test for milk, soy, nuts, and chocolate, no reaction to anything. He doesn’t really seem concerned about any of it. But said that if it is in fact an allergy to milk I’ll need to find out before it gets to be a bigger deal. Eventually I gave up dairy, except hidden dairy, not much of a change, so I gave up all dairy and noticed change for a few days. His cheeks tamed down in color and temperature and his stools lost the dark flecks but remained very mucusy. So I gave up soy and eggs. Now, he goes back and forth with the red cheeks, still has lots of mucusy stools, but no dark spots. I am trying to do TED but having a hard time, I have lost about 10 extra pounds and my milk is so clear there is hardly any fat, I am usually a dairy fiend and got all my fat there. Cooper doesn’t really seem any hungrier, but I am worried that he is not getting all the nutrients he needs. At what point is formula a better option than breastfeeding? And on top of all of this, lately he has been waking up around 5 AM and having a hard time going back to sleep. He has slept thru the night since he was about 2 months. He will not nap unless he is being held or if I can lay down with him, and wakes up as soon as he is put down or I try to get up. He is always tired an therefore super fussy, but, there is no pain associated with eating or bowl movements. He does go thru episodes of spitting up more than usual. I just don’t know what to do now. I expected to be able to provide breast milk for him until a year, but now I’m not sure if I am hurting him more than helping him
Topic: Rough feedings
My refluxer is having a really hard time with his bottles lately. He is fed breastmilk thru a dr. brown’s bottle, 4 oz every 3 hours. Lately he has been really squirming during the feeding, gulping, and just very aggrevated like. It doesn’t seem like he has a very good suck. He is getting over a dbl ear infection but i don’t think that is contributing to the problem anymore. He does fine at night when he pretty much sleeps thru the feeding. He has the whole proper suck pattern down then but during his day feedings its a nightmare. I saw something on babies being tongue tied and wonder if that could be the case. He has never wanted to take a pacifier. My first refluxer was the same way when it came to the pacifier. They just want nothing to do with it. Has anyone had any experience with the tongue tied issue. Also, i thought about trying to put some rice cereal in his bottle to possibly thicken it, thinking that it may just be coming out to fast for him to swallow. Has anyone incountered any of this? (BTW-Brock is 3 months old and on Prevacid, 15 mg 2x a day–per the wonderful marcikids.com)
this is more of a eergh
than a boo-hoo! Well, we’re back in san diego and with a different ped. b/c of insurance change (but didn’t like the last one so much anyway). I thought this new guy was better b/c last week he seemed really interested and open when I told him how the HCl supplements had pretty much stopped Finn’s reflux.
But this week (we had to go back so soon b/c he wanted to look at the prior med. records, but when we got there–he of course had looked at nothing) he suggested we try a two week trial of nutramigen! Here we are at 7 months of breastfeeding (with trials of TED) and he’s telling me that sometimes formula is better for reflux. I argue the point that I’m willing to do TED again and that wouldn’t that be better? and he says ‘not necessarilly”
‘why?” I ask. He says that there are proteins that are just in the breastmilk that the baby can react to!? I haven’t heard of this at all, but realized that we were not on the same page. Then he started getting defensive “I’ve been doing this 30 years…” , and I wanted to cry. Why can’t i find a dr. that is on the same page? I mean we discussed nutramigen with Ped #1 (and we’re now on Ped #4) when Finn was 4 weeks old!
I just feel like we’re back to square one. He actually suggested
positioning. We’d told him repeatedly that it’s not the
reflux that is bothering finn, it’s intestinal pain–and we tried positioning 5 months ago! He then said that the next step would be to try to get him to fall asleep by himself.
Well maybe he could fall asleep by himself if he wasn’t in so much discomfort! And lastly, I’m questioning my supply again–b/c the dr.
did–finn’s in the 5th percentile.Anyway…he still seems better than some of our prior docs because he made a point of saying that ultimately he will do what we want to do. ugh.
update–we see a surgeon on friday b/c the dr. thinks his hydroceles have developed into hernias (which could be causing some of the intestinal discomfort?). the dr. also ordered a full blood profile with a RAST test (although these may not be accurate?). the blood analysis is really for the nutritionist we’re working with…she wants to know about his mineral levels, etc.
Sorry for the ramble…and as always…thank you so much for ‘listening’. I would be lost without this forum.

Topic: So confused!
I am so confused about MSPI does this sound like it?Since about a week old Grant has had nasy BM’s with mucus but I was told that it’s normal for a breastfed baby. He was very restless at night but has since gotten better and actually sleeps. DUring the day he sleeps better in his carseat. He sleeps well at night and rarely cries however, he grunts and struggles on the breast and the bottle, has explosive bright green mucusy bm’s at almost every feed( sometimes 4 w/in 45 mins), wheezy, diaper rash, wet burps, hiccups and spits up. He has been on soy for 24 hours and he seems more uncomfortable and spits up more. I am not sure what to do should I wait out the soy, ask for his stool to be tested, go straight to the hypo formula- I’m just at a loss. The fact that he isn’t miserable is throwing me and making me think I’m making a mountain out of a mole hill. But, feeding him is not this clam enjoyable experience so I know something isn’t right well that and the poop factor. What should be my first step? I’m trying to read through all the posts but I don’t have that many hours 🙂Topic: Fighting Sleep or Pain
I am brand new to message boards but I’m giving it a shot. My little guy is 5 months and diagnosed with GERD, on 7.5 Prevacid 2x day and just started rice cereal at night. He will not nap good – 10-30 minutes if I’m lucky at a time but wants to and needs to approx. every 2 hours. He gets very whiny and I know he’s tired. Sleeps decent if riding in my husbands truck. Every little noise wakes him up – doesn’t matter what it is. At night he will not go to sleep happily and I don’t know if he’s uncomfortable or just overtired. He seems exhausted to me but will not stop crying. Takes a good hour of rocking, breastfeeding, crying, putting to bed 2-3 times before he will actually go to sleep. What do I do? The doctors tell me to do whatever I need to do to get through this and correct any problems after he is outgrown his GERD but I don’t know. How do I know if he’s uncomfortable or just not wanting to be put in his crib? He sleeps on a wedge in a pack-n-play. He has improved in the last 2 weeks with sleeping at night. The GI doctor split his medicine up to to times a day instead of one and that has helped and I think the cereal has helped. He is exclusively breastfed. I am too afraid to let him cry (unless he is just whimpering). I am afraid it will make his tummy upset or his reflux worse when he gets so upset. Help, I am very confused on how to get my poor little guy some more sleep. He has bags under his eyes. I think he just is overtired at nighttime but how do I deal with that.
Thanks,
