I can’t help much with the neocate because right now we’re supplementing with Alimentum.
But I can try to help with the relactation part. I’ve been working on that for a little while now. I’ve been working with an amazing lactation consultant. I started out with pretty much nothing there and now am actually seeing my supply to slowly increase. It was one of the things I most regret now (stopping bfeeding). I only wish I knew then what I know now. I knew before I was even pregnant that I wanted to bfeed as long as I could, my personal decision. I had to stop when my LO was going through the worst of her reflux. Yeah, ultimately I decided to stop nursing, but because I listened to the advice of my not-so-supportive pediatrician at the time. I kick myself everyday now for stopping. Because if my baby is MSPI I could possibly bfeed and do TED. How long has it been since you stopped? And how old is your LO?
What the consultant has been working with me on…
-Pump, pump, pump as much as you can (I’m doing 5-10 mins every hour for 6 hours in the day and then 15 mins or so every 2-3 hours. I’m not perfect and sometimes skip an ocassional one at night)
-Let your baby nurse as much as he/she will even if they’re not getting anything (comfort nursing)
-Feed your baby at your bare breast
-Spend as much skin-to-skin time as you can with your baby
-Have you thought about using a supplemental nursing system until your supply comes back in? (I know of two brands…one by Medela and one by Lactaid). You can use this to feed your baby the formula at your breast while waiting for your full supply. Gets the baby used to nursing again.
-Herbs (blessed thistle and fenugreek)-she recommended the Mother’s Milk tea, but I just can not drink tea so I’m taking the two by pills
-Relax-she really explained to me that she thinks my stress level is what is not letting my milk let down. She did an exam and said I still have a lot of milk-making tissue left. It’s just the stress of dealing with my poor darling baby. She told me to relax when I’m pumping. Think of water, think of your milk over-flowing, gushing out, whatever. She said pumping is my time to relax and let go of stress.
That’s everything I can think of real quick. If I can think of anything else I’ll let you know. I wish you the absolute best!

IMO< I wouldn’t. We actually had a HUGE family fight over this when my ds was smaller. My MIL thought my ds should be on goats milk, I flat out refused. Oh, the drama. Anywho, if your little one has a true milk protein intolerance it won’t help. The proteins in goats milk are SO similar to the proteins in cows milk.
I have been researching chiropractors a little. They are really into breastfeeding, non-vaccinating, non-medicating type stuff. I take everything mine says with a grain of salt, but that’s just me

Okay, so we had our visit to the chiro today……..very interesting! She took a full history. Was really trying to tie the reflux to our first round of vaccines. Our dd was showing signs well before that time…we just didn’t know they were signs til later. Chiro was also VERY interested in the formula we are on (alimentum). She recommended a homemade Raw Cow’s Milk formula….uhhhh….I’m not sure just yet what I think of THAT! I told her that we were on Alimentum as we suspected a dairy allergy and then she suggested either doing a homemade Goats Milk or Liver (?) formula. I’ve been reviewing the website she gave me PLUS the controversial info about this topic of homemade formula….I’m not sure I’m willing to chance it. Her reasoning was that the Alimentum isn’t “pure” and since I’m not breastfeeding, this homemade option was the closest. That homemade formula would somehow clean out Amanda’s system or something like that.
Anyway, I’m not sure I’m buying that part.
From there she adjusted baby and did cranial massage….baby seemed to enjoy the whole thing and was totally mellow for her. I didn’t really notice anything, except we’ve had NO spit up today and baby went down really well for bedtime…..but it’s still early (10pm my time). The proof will come by morning.
Anyway, we are going to continue to see her for adjustments. Baby’s scan showed quite alot of misalignment in her neck. Hopefully that help her.
As for the formula issue….honestly, I think I’m too scared to introduce Raw Cow’s Milk. As I understand it, straight Cow’s milk (and goat’s milk) is really hard to digest and you aren’t even supposed to be introducing it til 12 months or so….what the heck will it do to my gerdling???!!!!!
Anyway, signing off….a scaredy-cat.

We have 2 doctor diagnosed my 11 week old daughter.
One said Chloe has reflux (didn’t say what kind of reflux) and the other said she just spitting up.
She spitting not much but gagging and coughing.
She has eczema too.
She barely cry or fussy.
But she burps and spit up hours after feeding sometimes, and I could hear water sound on her throat that cause her coughing.
Do you think I should go to GI specialist?
What the upper GI study could show?
Is the study could show if my daughter has reflux or not?
And what kind of study that could check if the liquid doesn’t go to her lung?
Thank you, many opinions or advise would be appreciated.
All of this happened since I started her on 100% formula, when I do breastfeeding, nothing happened.
So I start breastfeeding again.
I tried milk and soy based already.
I *think* that the article says you start the enzymes while on the diet?
Colic & Food Allergy in the Breastfed Infant: is It Possible for an Exclusively Breastfed Infant to Suffer From Food Allergy?
Barbara Schach and Michael Haight
From the Journal of Human Lactation 2002; 18;50
DOI: 10.1177/089033440201800108
This is from page 51:
“The first phase of the elimination diet involves the elimination of dairy, soy, nuts, strawberries, and chocolate. The diet may also include the elimination of wheat, eggs, corn, and so on if the first phaseof the maternal eliomination diet does not resolve infant symptoms. The breastfeeding mother also begins taking two pancrease MT-4 strength tablets with each meal and one with each snack. Pancrease is a digestive enzyme that further breaks down fats, proteins &carbohydrates before they enter the mother’s bloodstream. It is theorized that proteins from the mother’s diet that are brolen down before they cross the semipermeable membrane of the breast may be less likely to provoke an allergic response in the infant. This strategy has decreased symptoms of colic, eliminated or greatly reduced blood in the infant’s stool, and allowed breastfeeding to continue without the need to change the infant to a nonallergic formula. Among 16 breastfeeding mothers treated w/ Pancrease at our clinic, 13 have been able to continue breastfeeding , with resolution of bloody stool and a decrease in symptoms of colic. This, however, was not a prospective case control study. the question remeains, “Would these symptoms have resolved spontaneously?” Until we have more studies in this area, the answer is unknown.”

Erin,
I just had to reach out to you because you and I have/are in the same boat. McKenzie only did have blood in her stool on occasion, but it seems that no matter what I took out of my diet, she was still in tummy pain and still couldn’t sleep. It is to the point with me where my milk supply dropped so low I have to supplement with Neocate and I am probably going to wean her to only two feedings of BM a day and pray that she can handle that amount if I eat without so much restrictions. Now I am not saying this to discourage you, just to say, I have been there. There is the cuttest picture of my two year old daughter and I laying on the couch with my back facing the camera and her arm around me…and hte look on her face is just priceless. But what the camera doesn’t show is that I am crying my eyes out in the picture and my two year old came over to comfort me. So I have been where you are.
On to the hopeful news. I am probably going to try this with McKenzie…have you heard of IgG allergy testing. Sheri (MFPIX2) is much more knowledgeable about this than I am, but I guess this shows more of a delayed response/intolerance to foods. I had another girlfriend that had eliminated a LOT of things from her diet and still her baby suffered. She had the test done and it showed about 12 other foods (down to millet and such) that her baby was reacting to. She took them out of her diet and the reflux almost stopped, and the poops improved. I guess it is the kind of foward thinking about some cases of reflux. THere are two labs that do it. Immunolabs and Great Plains Labratory. I am going to get the test done with Great Plains Lab because all you need is a Dr. signature. I have to pay for this out of pocket as I have an HMO that doesnt’ cover it, but the cash price is $200…when I called immunolabs they said the cost varied, but the insurance price was $900…I don’t think I could even afford the cash price, and on top of that you have to go to one of thier physicians. Anyway, feeel free to PM me if you want to ask more. My Ped signed the form today, but I need her medical number or something so she is going to have to get that to me tomorrow. But I want to get this test done soon. I am hoping that it can at least give me a guide map of what I CAN eat with confidence so that I can continue nursing longer.
I am very pro breastfeeding. I fed my other DD for a whole year despite MSPI and I loved it. But here is something else I have come to learn through this whole experience. My children also need a mamma that is in good health otherwise I am not good to anybody really. You should feel proud of every ounce of breastmilk you have fed your son. He is lucky to have a mom that would go through all you have to continue to breastfeed as long as you have. If you end up having to stop, you have given your son a GREAT start and don’t ever forget that!!!!! (How silly, I am crying as I type this to you). lol PM me if you need someone to talk to.
Emily
I wish I knew more of what to tell you!
I suppose I’d try the pacreatic enzymes?
hang in there! one more thought: since you’re eating pears, maybe use PEARS for the prevacid? I am not sure they’re acidic enough though? I only mention it bcse there have been 2 babies on this board allergic to apples! who woulda thunk it? SIGH. And corn. corn syrup is in everything. there have been babies sensitive to it, too!
it’s so hard! you say that she’s not fussy or crying and now you say you’re having a bad day
…can you explain some more?
does she have any rashes or excema?
with all the coughing and gagging, maybe you want to ask for a Swallow Study (this is not an Upper GI). This looks at how she drinks and looks to see if she’s aspirating liquid into her lungs…I’m not sure if it’s helpful, though, if she’s not coughing/gagging while drinking? I hope someone else can help with this
.
the reflux medication doesn’t address spitting up or vomiting; it helps reduce the acid so that it doesn’t hurt as it comes up/comes down…
if the soy is helping, and if you’re also breastfeeding, then you’ll want to eliminate all milk proteins from your diet- this means even milk as an ingredient in something (whey, casin, rennet, etc)…

I have 11 week old baby girl, around 6 week of age she was diagnosed with reflux (starting from no spitting up at all, then spit up and then coughing and gagging).
I know all baby spit up but the gagging that made me go to the doctor.
The doctor doesn’t want to put her on medication so she change her formula with soy (and I also breastfeeding). She was okay on soy.
The gagging and the coughing still there (especially when or after she cried).
We do the feeding on upright position, burp her every couple ounce, keep her upright for 30 minutes (without jostle/too much moving around).
She was doing well on her weight on her 2 month check up so the doctor doesn’t want to give her any med or upper GI study.
And then 10 days ago, she threw up the whole bottle (after 2 ounce), I’m pretty sure its the whole bottle and this is the first time she threw up.
And yesterday was the second time, when we burp her for the 2 ounce.
I notice in the morning she was coughing and today the gagging a bit forceful.
She cried today and starting coughing then gagging and then spit up.
Oh yeah, she barely spit up, sometimes only like drooling and sometimes go a week without spit up.
I called the doctor today, and the doctor asked me to watch her cough only, if got worse I should make appointment.
Her cough very light though, not mucusy.
She gains really well, for 10 days she gains about 1 lbs 10 ounce.
She barely cry, sleeps well and not fussy at all.
The spit up or the threw up, she act like nothing happened.
What is happening to my daughter?
We don’t have any allergy or asthma in our family, should I be concerned?
Should we ask the upper GI study?
Her gagging got worse though…
Help, first time mom…
ANd sometimes, I heard water on her throat, what is this?
And since the threw up episode, she’s been gagging a lot and farting a lot too.

I’m new here and am hoping to get some help if not answers! ๐
My daughter, Averi, was born in January and was breastfed for about the first 2 weeks. During this time she was also being supplemented at night feedings. No problems! After that we switched her solely to formula(nestle good start). She was on this about a week when I noticed a difference in her temperment. She also wasn’t pooping and so I made an appt. w/her Ped. At that appt. the Ped. had us switch her to Soy. All this did was make her even more fussy and still not pooping like normal. After a week of that we were switched to Nutramigen. She seemed to get better and began pooping(quite frequently). After a week of this she began having blood in her stool. So, another appt., the Ped. said she had a milk protein allergy and to try Alimentum.
So, once she began Alimentum she was about a month old. She was eating like a champ – 4oz every 2-3hours(if not more), burping beautifully, sleeping well, pooping daily. NO PROBLEMS!!! She was a happy baby once again.
Than came the shots. At 2 months old she had her vaccines and that EXACT day I noticed a difference in my baby girl. She began refusing feeds (20oz/day), spitting up her entire bottle-sometimes 2 hours AFTER, extremely fussy, arching her back, not pooping AGAIN. Just a completely different baby. So, finally her 4 month check-up. The Ped. suggested giving her ZANTAC b/c she thought Averi had esophagitis and to go ahead and thicken every other feed. Well, as you all could have guessed, that didn’t help not one bit. She was just getting worse. She pretty much stopped the spitting up(probably due to the thickened feeds) but she was eating even less now-10oz A DAY! So, I scheduled another appt. w/the Ped. and she went ahead and switched her to Prilosec (3.5mL/ once in the morning). She also, THANK GOODNESS, put in a referral to a GI specialist. Almost IMMEDIATLY I noticed my Averi happy again. She was eating up a storm (30oz/day), sleeping beautifully, pooping normally. Just a peaceful baby! Then, after almost 2 weeks, she’s WORSE than before. She woke up the other morning and started refusing feeds, spitting up a little more, and now NOT sleeping. The NOT sleeping part is making me wonder if something is getting worse with her b/c she has always been a decent sleeper. Now I’m lucky if I get 1 1/2hours out of her. She used to nap for 2-3hrs every 2 during the day and sleep anywhere from 3 1/2-10hrs a night. I called the Ped. office today to ask if her medication can be either increased or if she can have more doses throughout the day. I’m still waiting on a call back. Hoping to get an answer soon. I don’t want to hear Averi cry all night again. It’s the worst feeling when you can’t do anything to make your baby feel better.
Averi’s GI appt. is scheduled for the 29th of July. So, I’m praying that the GI spec. can figure out what all is going on with my little girl. Please, if anyone has any suggestions as to what I should do or what might be going on with my baby girl, I’d appreciate it!!!
yes, there’s amalyse or some other enzyme(s) in the breastmilk that will break down cereal. for silent reflux you might not want to consider cereal. it can also get your supply all wonky
– from ‘groupie intro’ https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853&PN=1&TPN=1 check out the links in the ‘section’ called ‘breastfeeding your reflux baby’
did you get a prescription for zantac? I would ask for this as you wait for the ped GI specialist. I would also go look at http://www.marci-kids.com to prepare yourself for what you will be asking for from the ped GI (or even from your ped or even from a family dr!)
once you ‘know’ what you want to request/ask for then I always suggest FAXING the dr. This way it’s in writing…
FAX FAX FAX the dr
dont wait for a call…
start off w/ a THANK YOU
keep it short & sweet
stick to the facts (no feelings and no rambling emotions)
state current meds, doses, symptoms
make request- flat out- short & sweet
THANK AGAIN
follow up by calling office to say fax was sent
call again later to discuss requests in fax, ie: have you called in the increased prescription yet? THANK YOU
sample fax: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=10633&PID=90325#90325
another question: how are baby’s poops? ‘normal’ breastfed baby poops that are mustardy & seedy? or green (occasional green is fine! just not almost all the time)? mucousy? this looks like snot or stringy or even curds…if poops are not ‘regular’ the majority of the time, then this can be a sign of MSPI. look for the link from groupie intro (link above)

Hello All! This is my first posting. I have been searching the web endlessly trying to find out what is going on with my baby girl. She is 4 weeks today! The problem we are having is that she is Very gassy. She doesn’t spit up very much, but she eats very irregular. Sometimes she will only eat an ounce or two and other times she will eat four ounces. She get the hiccups after every feeding. When we lay her doun to sleep she grunts and whines and wakes herself up. She used to love her bouncy(sp?) chair, but now she grunts and whines in it. The only way we get her to sleep is if we hold her while we are sitting or standing. She doesn’t really cry, but is always grunting and fussing. She chokes very easy when we are feeding her. We are bottle feeding her with my breast milk. We also can’t get her to burp alot of the time. She also sounds like she is congested. I think that is everything! Sorry this is so long and rambling. My husband an I are just at our wits end and we want our little girl to feel better. We have a doctors appointment on Monday for her month check up and I was looking for a few pointers to talk to the doctor about and a few pointers on how to help her out. Any feed back is greatly needed and welcome!

emily–if you have any supply issues, i found the most wonderful product! no, i do not work for this company
the site is motherlove.com and if you go to the breastfeeding products, you will find the tonics that help with supply issues. i wish i had known about this with my first child! they really do help a whole bunch.
and wow, if i had to cut that much out of my diet, well, wow.
you go!

I eat those all the time as I am avoiding the dairy, soy, eggs, etch while I am breastfeeding. ๐ they are yummy…I would even eat them after I am done breastfeeding for a more healthy cookie. ๐
