I think thickening is good for those babies that need the extra calories and for those who are aspirating. I also think that there are other ways to do these things- but I am no expert in this!! maybe try beechnut brand cereal- rice or oatmeal, or any other brand that doesn’t have milk or soy proteins?
you might find that you don’t need to thicken? sometimes these little ones’ systems are just too immature to handle the cereals…

I wouldn’t worry about the spit up if it’s not painful for baby & if baby is not having a problem gaining weight….

I also am not a proponant of thickening, especially thickening breastmilk- it really doesn’t thicken anyway, as it has enzymes in it that breaks down the cereal

I would up the prevacid dose
and look into pepcid complete for night time (or whenever it’s needed)
I think the dose is 1/2 a tablet for your baby- do a search (button ocated on the upper right hand corner of the screen)
you can also try adding mylanta cherry supreme to the zantac to help with the taste, that’s what we did

we used caracream & just gave it it a syringe…didn’t mix it with anything…

I would ask for a swallow study- this is where they look at HOW baby is swallowing and if there’s any aspiration into the lungs- this is done by a speech pathologist, which sounds funny because it’s a baby, but that’s who runs the test
