InactiveBoth the consitpation and teething could be causing her to eat less. I like Therese’s idea of adding a little more water to her soy formula, or you could add 1/2 ounce or an ounce or Pear Juice once or twice a day. That’s what I did with Myles and it seemed to help his constipation.
For teething I used to give him tylenol or Motrin 1/2 hour to 45 minutes before a feeding and that often helped. On really bad days I’d spoon feed him his breast milk or formula….he usually would accept that over the bottle when his gums were very sore.

InactiveHeidi, Thanks for compiling all of this great info! I too searched online for everything I could find because my son was said to have “colic” and would grow out of it. I never believed that as he was miserable 90% of the day!! In all my research (and I did lots of it!!) I never stumbled across the terms MSPI or intolerances. I knew he didn’t have a standard allergy, but didn’t know about delayed reactions and reactions to the proteins in my milk.
Can you add some other terms to your keyword list? breastfeeding, breastfed, spit up, spitup, vomit, fussiness, fussy, constipation, diarrhea, gas pain, gas
Thanks again for all your hard work!

InactiveI was told babies take 2 -3 ounces per pound by my pediatrician. But that is the average. Some take more, some take less. She seems to be in the right ball park. Gabby started taking 3 – 4 ounces at 3 months old. Before that, she was still doing newborn feedings (2-3 oz). She was also breastfed the first 10 weeks with the occasional supplemental bottle so it’s hard to tell what she was taking then. Anyways, hope this helps.

InactiveI can not believe I didn’t see this thread until now…I feel just sick about it! I use the Dr Browns with Dagney (after trying most on the market too), I was using the Playtex Drop Ins for a while until we started thickening her feeds & she couldn’t get it through there. I did just find the cross-cut Playtex nipples, so I may just have to switch to those & even cut them more if she can’t get enough out. I have mixed feelings about the Playtex, as you can’t really tell how much your baby has eaten unless you open them up and let the air back in, oh, and of course the whole mixing thing, what a nightmare. They ARE a whole lot easier to use, and less washing is involved. I just bought 2 new Dr Brown’s bottles too, to send to my MIL’s when I go back to work, but luckily I haven’t opened them yet, so I can return them for more playtex nipples and drop ins! I have spent SO MUCH MONEY on these bottles!! This makes me want to try breastfeeding again when we have another little one, which won’t be too soon!!

InactiveHere is what another mother from http://www.quicktopic.com/23/H/aSxbbAkUULVMX had to say about this topic…
“We had some success with NAET. My son completed 2 months worth of treatments. It was EXTREMELY instrumental in telling us what he was intolerant of and helping me to tailor my breastfeeding diet to meet his needs. We also so some general overall improvements in him with the treatments, such as better sleeping, much happier baby, better stools. We are now doing BioSET treatments. Very similar to NAET, but also includes the use of digestive enzymes (for both baby & breastfeeding mother). My ds is 16 mo. old and has been extremely restricted on solids & still only tolerates breasmilk (no formula or alternative milks). We have seen some big improvements since adding the digestive enzymes. He is now tolerating the following foods in diced form (as opposed to only baby food form) chicken, turkey, avocado, banana, pear, apple, zuchinni, winter squash. This is a huge improvement for us and he seems to be gaining weight a bit better too. Good luck with NAET, use it with an open mind and recognize that the diagnostic ability is priceless. Best wishes.”

InactiveOh Lori,
i also got teary eyes b/c i so much relate to the 1 hour feedings and constant rejection of the bottle and breast. That’s wonderful she is eating on her own. It gives me hope that kendra will improve too someday. You are a very strong person b/c this situation can be so difficult to handle. Thanks for sharing i hope she continues to do well.

InactiveMy ped. gastroenterologist told me that Alimentum might loosen stools. My son is constipated all the time and needs lots of help to go. I’m breast feeding but giving Alimentum approx. 5x a week (almost 1 bottle a day) and it appears to have helped. He used to go every 5-6 days and now it’s every other day. So, the loose stool could be from the Alimentum. As others said, as long as it’s just loose, not water! Good luck.

InactiveThanks everyone. Last night my son slept from 8 until 4 and from 5 to 5:45. It’s a miracle. Let’s hope this is a sign of things to come. They say reflux clears up at 6 months (he’s 6 months old today) but my older son had it (though not as bad) until 12 months and took Zantac for the whole 12 months.
I know about the whole layer type thing that Gaviscon supposedly makes. It’s frustrating b/c although I’m breastfeeding, the last feed of the night is a bottle of milk if I have it or Alimentum. My son falls asleep eating. I want him to eat more, but can’t wake him up. Then, I give him the Gaviscon and he’s up and wants more food, but if I give it to him, it will break the layer! UGH.
The specialist said to go up to 2 mls of Gaviscon (adult regular strength). I wonder if it will make a difference.
The specialist did not up our Zantac. He ok’d 1 ml in the a.m. and 1.5 mls in the p.m. He wants my son off it by 8 months. I’m not so sure. We go to the pediatrician on Monday for our 6 month visit and I’m sure she’ll be ok with upping the Zantac (at 4 months she said to give 1 ml 3 times a day). I hate playing doctors off of each other, but I just want to do what is best for my son.
Thanks again.

InactiveSo for those of you that know our story, you know all that we’ve struggled through the past 21 months with Hailey’s feeding. For those of you who don’t, the summary is that Hailey’s reflux got so bad that by 8 weeks she stopped breastfeeding and would also refuse a bottle. We tried everything, but couldn’t get her to take anything except by sleepfeeding her, which was also hit or miss. It would take almost 2 hours just to feed her a couple of ounces, and we were trapped in the house trying to feed her all the time. This was the only way we could get her to drink. She hated the bottle, and didn’t really care much for the cup either. It was always a struggle. Up until the new year, we still had to give it to her asleep.
BUT, the new development is that for a little while now, something changed for her, and she started to take her “sleep feeds” as sleepy feeds, while awake. She actually started to open her mouth willingly while awake, and even make sounds and say bottle indicating that she wanted it.
More recently, after the poisonous bottle thread, I was doing some bottle disposal, and I had TONS of them from our storage all over the counter. Hailey came into the kitchen and said “I want”. She just kept saying that she wanted something and I didn’t know what she was talking about, and then she said “I want bottle”. So I shockingly filled it up with soy milk and she sat down in front of the TV and proceeded to suck back a few ounces. It took her a long time, but she did it, and this was the first time in her life that she ever took the bottle and HELD it, and even more, drank it WILLINGLY WHILE AWAKE. I was shocked, and when dh saw, we both just stood there, and cried. We couldn’t believe how “normal” it looked.
It’s only happened a few times since then, but we’re happy nontheless. The irony, I guess, is that it comes at a time when toddlers should be weaning off the bottle. But hopefully it can offer us some hope as an alternative for when we officially wean night feeds in a few months.

InactiveHer dose is pretty low. And the arching definitely sounds like reflux. Myles didn’t eat well when he was teething, but he only arched when it was reflux.
Mylanta before a feeding may help…and if it does help it would be a good indicator that it’s reflux that’s bothering her.
Like Lori suggested, when Myles was not drinking much I’d add formula or breast milk to his baby foods and/or spoon feed him straight formula or breast milk to keep him hydrated.

InactiveFor Myles’ constipation problems I used the following remedies:
1. Gerber stage one prunes – 1/2 a container in his oatmeal every morning. For some reason I found that actual prunes helped more than prune juice.
2. Flax seed oil – 1-2 teaspoons daily by spoon, or added to his oatmeal in the morning.
3. Pear Juice – 1 ounce a day added to one of his feedings. I used to make one of his bottles with 4 ounces of formula or breast milk, and one ounce of pear juice. Sounds gross…but he never minded it.
4. Fiber Juice – http://www.fiberjuice.com I used to add about one ounce of this a day to his baby foods.
5. Benefiber – 1/2 teaspoon daily added to a bottle or to his morning oatmeal.
6. Broccoli – I found out that feeding him broccoli often helped and never hurt, so I began pureeing broccoli and feeding it to him most days. He loves it and still eats it a few times per week.
As you can see it was quite an assortment of remedies in combination that worked best for him. I felt bad about giving him juice because I don’t believe babies or toddlers need juice, but for him it was essential and it really did work well…and when you really look at it, he was only getting two ounces of juice a day.
Also, it was very important with Myles for me to avoid certain foods which would always bind him up. For him these foods to avoid were:
rice, bananas, apples, spinach, corn, pasta and blueberries.
Sweet potatoes had to be given sparingly…more than two or three times per week was too much.
Better foods for him were: oatmeal, squash, peaches, pears, carrots, gerber garden veggies (green).

InactiveThat’s great that he’s gaining well and breast feeding is going well.
Sometimes doctors don’t take our complaints and concerns very seriously though when our babies are growing and gaining, so be persistent if you think he’s in pain and the Tagament doesn’t seem to help him.March 7, 2007 at 2:40 pm #26824In reply to: Reflux issues/meds

quite the opposite from my first child…..so I am very pleased/relieved.He was 6lbs 15oz at birth, 6lbs 6oz at discharge, 7lbs 13oz @ two weeks, and 8lbs 11oz at 3 weeks….so he’s doing well. It’s frustrating b/c the ped looks at the weight gain and concludes that all is well. While I feel very blessed, I still want to provide my child some relief if possible.
I’m hoping the H-2 blocker gives us some feedback.
How expensive are the PPI meds? I’m guessing they are quite expensive.
we get prevacid free bc our insurance has a contract with them…zegerid was costing us $400 a month at one point…
