my daughter has started this weird thing where she is groaning all the time…she will be playing with a magazine or just playing around and all the sudden she starts it. It is a real throaty sound. But the odd thing is, she doesn’t really seem to be in pain from it. If you call her name while she is doing it, she will stop and look up and smile. Do you think she is just exploring her voice. She used to make a similar noise to this when she would poop, but now she has started doing it more often.
Also, she has started this thing that when she is breastfeeding she pulls away and arches her back, but doesn’t seem in any type of pain from it, sometimes she just starts to watch TV (yes, I watch TV while I breastfeed her because it relaxes me. Do you think it is reflux or just being a baby. Like i said, sometimes it seems like she is just arching her back so that she can see the TV…she never cries when she does this.
last thing, Brianna constantly pulls her legs up to her chest when you are trying to put her down for a nap, and she will even pull them upin her sleep…but she doesn’t seem gassy…she very rarely passes any. Could she just be comfortable that way?
These might be silly questions, but it is alway so reassuring to hear advice/experience from other monthers. 🙂
this was posted once on the yahoo breastfeedingreflux board:
what’s the connection between gas and reflux?
Gas is created when something isn’t digested properly; for example,
beans are generally harder to digest than other foods, which is why
they are notorious for causing gas in most people (they are generally
not a common problem with breastfed babies through mom’s milk, though;
this is just a common example to help make sense.)
Also, gas puts pressure on the esophageal sphincter (the muscle at the
top of the stomach that helps move and keep things down), making it
easier for whatever is in the stomach to be refluxed.

Hi Jennifer. I just had a few comments. Emma has been on Zegerid for a year now so of course I am going to say what a wonderful drug this is. However I totally understand that every baby is different and it might not work for others. My first question, what med was he on before Zegerid? I am just thinking a week might not be long enough to be certain it isn’t working, sometimes and others have noticed this, it can take 2 weeks to kick in, especially a PPI.
Also PPI’s are not to control or help vomiting, only to stop acid production so this is where my second questions arises, are you breastfeeding? Or what formula is he on?
If he is digesting milk or soy proteins and he is allergic &/or intolerant to them that can cause vomiting and stomach discomfort. He might not have showed discomfort and the proteins are now building up in his system causing these problems. I just want to make sure Zegerid is the problem before you take him off of it.
from my welcome/intro (groupie intro that’s stickied in the Introduce Yourself Forum) there’s a section about breastfeeding your refluxer
& there’s also a link to MSPI information, where there’s info about breastfeeding, too
and there’s a link to babywearing info
edited to add; oh yeah the link for Finding a GI is there too

Leanne,
I guess I’d probably stop the cereal and see how she does. It really made no difference for Myles whatsoever, except that he choked during feedings and it helped a little with that. I eventually stopped thickening because I felt he needed more breast milk/formula since he was not a big eater.
If her weight is fine, she doesn’t choke, and she doesn’t spit up much…IMO she probably doesn’t need the cereal.
Yeah, I know what you mean about obsessing. I used to contemplate what to do about Myles’ reflux nearly every waking moment of my life and then I’d dream (or I should say have nightmares) about it at night, too.

I put this in the introductions but maybe it didnt belong there?
Let me first give you alittle background info about my son, maybe it will help you, help me lol. Anyways I only breastfed for the first 2 weeks he was born, I just found it hard, it was like I was feeding him 24-7 and I had no time for my daughter. SO I stopped.. I started him on Enfilac. He seemed really gassy and I wasnt to sure if it was just the switch from the breast to a bottle. It lasted a week and I decided to change formula to Good Start. ANd he was fine for months. Well for the past 3 months Ive had problems. He started burping up more. He is 5 months now and it just seems to be getting worse. Its not just alittle burp up here and there its ALOT and alot of laundry to go with it! I dont even put him in his Bumbo chair cause that really gets the burp up flowing! He hasnt been a good eater. He moves around alot, like hes hungry then sucks alittle bit and turns his head. He grabs at the bottle to but I just thought that was him just messing around. The other day was bad, he burped up what looked his whole bottle and then clear burp up was coming up. He does a big burp up/throw up every day at least once. Littler burp ups are with every feeding and through out the day. Some of it isnt even after eatting and has become chunky ( sorry). He has started solids. Bananas seem not to agree to well and green beans are that great for him either.. Hes done good with carrots. I dont even carry him around facing me anymore cause he just burps up all the time
. Does this sound normal or does it sound like there might be a problem?? He does have a dr’s appointment in afew weeks. should I wait and see or should I call the dr?/ I know I worry alot so maybe thats all it is.. Its just really upsetting when your baby cries, hes hungry and then he wont eat!! ANd then I feel like Im forcing him cause hes moving around so much.. Maybe I am forcing him and thats why he burps up.. HELP
Oh yeah one more thing, he does not cry all the time or anything like that..
there’s a section about breastfeeding your reflux baby from the stickied post in the Introduce Yourself Forum (Groupie Intro)
4x a day doesn’t sound like too much at 10 months…
there is no ‘certain amount’ to nurse, I don’t think…
I was planning on going back to work when Jonah was 1yrs old, so I wanted to be ‘down’ to just morning and night…it was at 10 months that I started to try & cut down. I remember it being a very difficult concept to try & wrap my head around and, my sister kept laughing at me as I kept asking her about how to do it
…
you could try different milks like enriched rice milk (and there’s potato milk- I keep waiting for someone to try it & report back, LOL
– I read about it once upon a time here on this board…) and add flax seed oil to it or to her food to add extra ‘good’ fat (you can also investigate avocado oil- another thing I’m waiting for someone to investigate
)
as I cut out a breastfeeding session, I replaced it with a snack
also, are you making a sippy of water available at all times? Jonah always had a sippy nearby to drink water (still does now, for the most part)
edited to add: blackstrap molasses has a lot of calcium and iron…and there are calcium rich foods like broccoli…

So my daughter is 10 months and has been breastfeeding 4x/day…does that sound like too much? Laura, I know you said that Jonah was only at 2x by then. I was thinking about trying to cut her back to three and then see.
As for the breastfeeding…it has been hard, especially because Brianna has been to three GI Drs (we had to be in another state for a bit of time when she was first born) and two told me no way on MSPI and one said he thinks she is…ugh! I guess I am somewhat lucky becuase the only think I have noticed when something has dairy or soy and I don’t realize it and eat it, is that she seems to wake up more at night. Not fussier or anything, so I am not sure if she even has it, but it is worth it to me to aviod it, just to be safe. We are going to try her on dairy at 11 months, and see how she does with the butter and yogurt and stuff.
I will try ask dr sear.com…thanks everyone!
by 12 months, I was nursing Jonah 2x a day…he was weaned by 15months…
he didn’t really drink milk until he was about 18 months old
BUT he did eat foods high in calcium (he was not MSPI) & the ped said this was fine…

When I needed to wean Myles from breast milk I began by giving him 2 ounces of Good Start formula per day for two weeks. When he seemed to be doing fine with that, I gradually increased the amt of Good start over a period of several weeks. Good Start has the broken down, easier to digest proteins. That’s why I started with that. If she has no dairy issues you could probably start with whole milk. Just an ounce or two a day for two weeks and then gradually increase it.
Great job on the nursing.

WOW!! you’re my inspiration! I’m just starting. and along Justice’s moms post, Lucy is doing better than Henry ever did. Maybe because I am breastfeeding???
This is a great question. I always wonder what we’ll do if I can’t BF for years
I saw this on another board if noone can find the info for you.

First of all, way to go on still breastfeeding.
Most peds recommend that if your baby has reflux not to breastfeed. Our ped. for last child and Gi for Justice both told us not to breastfeed. UGH!!!!!!! I have had so many people tell me I should just put him on formula.
Sorry, I know that has nothing to do with your question. I would check out ask dr sears .com. Just put ask dr sears in your search and it should come up. Also there is a breastfeeding reflux forum. It is a yahoo groups if you want that address just let me know.

Hi,
My daugter is ten months old now, and my husband and I are starting to talk about how we are going to wean her off breastmilk at a year…any input would be great! Also, to moms with MSPI babies…how did you trial the whole milk?

Meet the Fockers? Funny movie.
Here some funny lines from one of my favorite (hint) 80’s movie.
“We figured there was too much happiness here for just the two of us, so we figured the next logical step was to have us a critter.”
“I’ll be taking these Huggies and whatever cash you got.”
“Why aren’t you breastfeeding? You appear to be capable.”
