Hi all. I have 2 girls, J born 09/09 and G born 09/12.
G was born via c-section because she was breech with a nucal arm. I tried everything to get her to flip but it was just not happening. G is exclusively breast fed. Shortly after her birth I was concerned about reflux. At her 2 week Ped appt. they told me it was most likely gas, and did not want to medicate her. The next 4 weeks were hell. She showed typical signs of silent reflux. G screamed, and arched when laying down. pulling off while eating, screaming, then eating frantically again, constant congestion (that was blamed on the C-section) . Finally at 6 weeks she was put on zantac and she was like a new baby. G is typically a happy, very smiley child.
I really thought we were passed the worst of it, and just last week I brought up the possibility of weening her off the Zantac, but we decided to wait a while longer.
G is on 1.1 ml 3x a day of zantac
Just the last few days sleeping has been a real challenge. My normally happy baby is very clingy, and fussy. She did get her TDAP Vax last week, and I thought it might be related to that, but now I just don’t know. She has also been having awful smelling gas, I am going to start the TED diet today and see if that is helps. G only poops every other day or so, and they seem to be normal. G only naps in arms, if she is down she only naps a few minutes at a time. She is so tired and fussy at the end of every day. I dread nighttime, every night. The past few nights there has just been no helping her, just screaming, while being fed, rocked, bounced, patted or shooshed. We both end up crying and finally she passes out. Usually she sleeps better next to me, on her side. Here is the kicker though, its now 11am, and she is still sleeping. Every day is like this. She can’t fall asleep, (no matter how early we start the process) before 1-3 am, but once she is finally asleep she will go a few hours. She wakes up to nurse, but usually falls asleep again quickly and quietly. She is clingy every day from about 6 till 11pm, and then miserable until I can finally get her to sleep.
I feel like I am missing something that I can be doing that’s obvious? Any insights, or advise? I need some help here. My poor girls, G never seems comfortable, and J is not getting the attention she needs.
Breastfeeding is so very important to me, I really don’t want to give it up, but at this point I am close to throwing in the towel, which will break my heart.
Thanks if you made it this far reading.
Okay, so I’ll make this as brief as possible. My 10 week old DD has been fussy since birth. My older daughter had mild reflux, so I recognized a lot of the symptoms (pulling off while breastfeeding/crying/arching back) and took her to the ped at about 3 weeks. They put her on zantac, it did nothing but make her an insomniac. Visited a lactation consultant who confirmed I have overactive/forceful letdown and thought she had thrush, even though a white coating on her tongue was the only symptom either of us had. Treated that with nystatin for a week and took her back to the ped when we saw no improvement.
Ped put her on prevacid (compounded), and I eliminated all soy and dairy from my diet. We did see some improvement, but about a week later she was back to crying in pain a lot, not to mention they seemed to give her headaches (she’d shake her head repeatedly and quickly run her hands back and forth over her head). We found a new ped after the first one pretty much wrote us off. They switched her to the solutabs. They made her miserable. The head-shaking got worse and she spent the two days we gave it to her screaming (I should mention that she does have a decent amount of happy time where she’ll just hang out and talk/smile, but when she’d get fussy, it was full out screaming). I stopped giving it to her two days ago, so she has had no meds at ALL for two full days. Today she was great, very little crying, and just a little fussing. The dr. prescribed her levsin drops and we tried those when she got kind of upset earlier and she calmed right down.
At her appt today they tested her diapers – absolutely nothing abnormal. The new ped suggested I continue with the prevacid (she said baby wasn’t on it long enough to decide if she was truly getting headaches because of it), adding in axid, and doing a trial of stopping breastfeeding and giving her elecare.
I don’t really want to do any of that. To be quite honest, I question if she actually has reflux at all. She doesn’t spit up (though my older daughter was a silent refluxer). She doesn’t mind lying on her back. She does pull of while feeding still, but it seems to be related to gas (often tries to pass it while feeding.) The prevacid made absolutely no difference. And, all along she’s had streaks of good days, and after two days of having no meds she had a great day today. I sort of question the MSPI as well for the same reasons.
Do reflux and MSPI come and go? I don’t want my little girl to be in pain, but I don’t want to mess with breastfeeding if I don’t have to — from everything I’ve read here and elsewhere, it seems like switching her to elecare for a week isn’t really going to show us anything. Her poop is sometimes a little mucousy and sometimes foul smelling, but neither all the time, or even all that often. Clearly something is causing her pain, but am I naive to think it’s just that her digestive system hasn’t fully matured yet? Or that her system is just upset from being given so many meds since she was 3 weeks old? The new ped’s suggestions just seem a bit drastic considering we’ve only been dairy/soy free for three weeks and she had such a good day on absolutely no reflux meds.
Sorry for the book, I’m just grasping at anything that might help at this point.
I should also add that I hold and/or wear her during the entire day, so she’s almost always upright, but she actually is a better sleeper at night where she’s flat on her back for 10+hours. She does wake to feed a few times still, but mostly goes right back to sleep. She’s sort of grumpy in the morning because she gets gassy and usually poops first thing.

Hello again. Sorry it’s been so long. We have been in the hospital twice since my last post (last time was about a month ago and the below test should have been done then, but that was a nightmare admit, too long to tell). Ds is now 2 1/2 years old. So, short verision, if there is one in our children’s lives: We are scheduled for an Impedanace probe (well, I am going to confirm it’s not just a ph probe tomorrow-if we are doing this lets do it right), MRI of his head (my first reaction-what!, but they say increase intracranial pressure can cause GI problems–so I said ok but only if..)MRI belly too. Then they want an endoscopy with tube placed for endoduodenum manometry. So, we have done the endoscopy before and know what to expect. But any tips for the Impedance and the endoduodenum manometry? Anything I shoul make sure they do or don’t do?That is the part he will be awake for and the most upset about a tube in his nose. Makes me sad, but I know it must be done.
So glad I have already done a lot of reading up on these things. I just read last night about the poor child who suffered through a probe and may have had the probe in the wrong place. Thank God her smart Mom new to ask for xray to check placement the second time and it WAS in the wrong place.
We are scheduled to have the Impedance probe placed Tuesday Jan 8th at noon and come home, go back to hospital Wed Jan 9th 8am to start with MRIs and while still asleep do a scope with biospies and place tube for the endoduodenum manometery. We will stay the night Wed and Ds will drink/eat (i pray)for the manometery on Thursday. The manometery is to make sure ds doesnt have a motility issues. The motility “specialist” GI doctor at Cook Children’s Ft Worth that is ordering all this first said ds doesn’t not sound like he has motility issues, but after a bit of “discussion” with me and reminding him (oh can’t remind if he didn’t bother to read the chart that was sent to him) that ds had a “redundant duodenum” on his Upper GI, he now says, oh well you can get something called megaduodenum with motility issues and agreed to do some test. The doctor also said lots of other completely stupid (sorry, but no other word to describe it) things ds might have. I helped him see that I wasnt even going to hear that
. We are to be off Prevacid for 5 days prior and expose ds to “all kinds of foods” starting a week ago. Ds does as good as he gets with baby food pears and beef, cheeiros. He never really has a great day so I can say oh, there is baseline and now I can try a new food. I do anyway, but it doesn’t really seem like it’s a particular food as it is the quanity or bulk. But I have been giving baby food sweet potatoes, carrots, and plan on chicken, ham and squash. QUESTION:Ds has never had dairy even when I was breastfeeding, has not had egg, nut or soy since about 8 months old. My gut says don’t give him that because he has had all these problems without it and if I give it to him now and he show a reaction on the scope, they will say, see it’s a food intolerance. I saw where the impedance probe can show if it is allergic reflux vs acid vs non acid
Should I give he food he hasn’t had in over a year and still having problems?A little vent: I am so tired of these doctors all making stupid choices for our children. No xrays to confrim important things, jumping to surgery for a 4 month old to place a g-tube before even a gastic emptying scan is even done, or maybe it’s food intolerance even though we have tired every food know to man and ds has problems (even on just Elecare when he was younger) or THIS is my favorite, lets make sure they don’t have autusim or sensory disoreder before we make it a GI issue! Couldn’t possiblity be the pain and lack of sleep causing speech delays.
I basically had to “prove” why my son doesn’t have this or that before the GI doctor would order these above test that should have been done months ago
. After we “talked” the doctor just got up from his chair and said we will do some test. I had to find out from his nurse what he ordered. This is the 4th GI doctor we have seen, so guess I should be happy we are finially getting something done. Thanks for listening and all the past advise.
Blessed Mom0710ds dob7/10 silent reflux, food intolerances ?, subglottic hemangomiaprevacid 15mg twice a day, miralax, propranolol for hemangomiaMy daughter was born at 23 weeks. She is now 9 months, about 6 months adjusted. Our story is long and winding, but I will try to select the parts I think are pertinent to the reflux that currently seems to be the cause of many of her issues.
She had an NG tube for most of her 128 days in the NICU (I was told this could lead to difficulty with the sphincter’s ability to close for some months following). She has basically been on Prevacid since her first milk (which was breastmilk then) at a month or so old. Due to her paralyzed vocal cord (from PDA ligation), we had to go to thickened formula feeds near the end of her NICU stay. After a swallow study and several formula changes (Enfacare>Alumentium>Neocate), we are now on Neocate at honey thickness with Thickit-2. She is still on 1/8 Ltr of oxygen at night; though her sats are high (almost always 99-100) we have left her on O2 until we can get her reflux under control. She is choking (with and without eating), vomiting, seeming to aspirate some vomit from time to time. Sometimes she sees the bottle and refuses it entirely. She takes anywhere from 8 to 14 oz per day (a couple of months ago, she was taking 25 to 28 oz daily). She is on solids (oatmeal, fuits, veg) which she enjoys eating most of the time. She requires sitting up straight for at least an hour after feedings. She used to sleep through the night, but now she is waking 6 or 8 times. It is hard to tease out whether this is reflux, oral/motor skill issues, or something else, but I personally think it is a mix of severe reflux and oral/motor. We know reflux is irritating her esophagus because she has been scoped several times and it is red and raw.We see many docs (GI nurse practitioner, ENT, neonatologist, pediatrician) and are currently on 2.5 ml of Prevacid 2x a day and Zantac (just started yesterday) 1 ml 1x day.Questions:I am really unclear on the timing of Prevacid and Zantac, and have been given conflicting advice about timing and empty tummy/doesn’t matter.I’m also not sure how far apart to give them and would deeply appreciate advice about this. (I could provide a typical day feeding schedule if that would help.)I’ve read in other posts on this site about Carafate (which I have taken before myself) and am curious about that, as well as about the non-aluminum Mylanta (or off brand).Gosh I am so thrilled to have run across this site today. I know working mom is an oxymoron, but I have a very busy job and am torn apart and unable to concentrate as my job takes time away from my first priority–my little angel! I just want to help her as I know so many moms on this site do. Thanks in advance for your time.
