Topic: Getting nowhere..HELP!!!
My daughter is 8 weeks old and we have been dealing with acid reflux since the second week. At first we switched to soy formula with little change then we tried Zantac and had to stop b/c she would cry for hours after we medicated her. Next we tried Prilosec and had to stop that as well b/c she would cry forhours with it. So we thought we could manage with burping quite often during feedings, keeping her head elevated and adding rice to her formula. That helped some. Through trial and error we found out my breast milk was making the reflux worse (weird) so we stopped that too. After many fussy days and nights, we were put on Nutramigen. We have seen some changes BUT…The past few days she has been spitting up more than ever. Nothing we do helps. She is even spitting up hours after the feeding. Pedi said to do smaller feedings but I’m wondering if anyone has been through this?? What ELSE can we try??
I hope I don’t seem ignorant or have missed an obvious as to where to order these products I read on here last night.
I go to the site where I read all about these products but all I can seem to order is the ph tester. I read where these products were available, then were not, then became available again in 2012, can anyone tell me the current status of these products and if I can order them, where, etc?
I have a 10 month old baby girl who is MISERABLE, I know you all understand, nothing helps! She is 16 lb, tried Zantac, no results, then Prevacid 15, no results, now Prevacid 30 no results.
She quit breastfeeding abruptly on Dec. 29 and has tried since but stops immediately and starts arching, etc.
I have been pumping every 3 hours and supplement with GentleEase but would love to try these new products. Any help is appreciated. THANK YOU!
Ok I see that I just missed the boat on ordering the products last week,RATS!
Anybody who can help me with a last minute order to them as a current customer or has extra medicine to sell, please let me know!

*Fiat* I am a mother of three young sons, and a 2 month old daughter. The story of how I found this page begins when my daughter, MM, was one month old. She had been restless and fussy, and then started coughing/choking/gagging. Her being my 4th baby, I honestly didn’t think much of it. She was still nursing all around the clock, and didn’t have a fever, so I didn’t think she was very sick.
After a few days the coughing got worse, and I actually fear she was choking and I brought her to the hospital. There she was admitted for pneumonia and a “virus” which later turned out to be RSV. I still nursed her while she was admitted in the hospital, she was observed after nursing as still choking and gagging, and her o2 Sats would plummet. She was then taken by ambulance to the Children’s hospital NICU, where she spent the next week for aspiration pneumonia.
She was given a NG tube for nourishment, and her status improved incredibly. Two swallow studies were done, and it was determined that she could not tolerate thin liquids. She was aspirating the breastmilk, which, combined with the virus, put her health in great danger.
We are now at home just over a month, and MM has been fed “honey thickened” formula, which for us means Nutramigen, with a tablespoon of rice cereal per ounce. She is doing much better now that she isn’t always fighting to keep her airway open. She is still small for weight and has catching up to do.
Currently, she has been having issues with diarrhea. I am not sure if it is related to winter colds, which have been nonstop this year with all the children, or if it is related to her formula, which is confusing since she consumed SO much cereal with each feeding. Because she was sick and hospitalized and basically has to catch up on a month of weight gain, her diarrhea is quite a concern to me. I will most likely take her in to her dr before the week is out, but my objective here to gain knowledge from others who may have walked this path before me. Thank you!
Edited to add: MM was put into the hospital’s Apnea/Reflux program, and now is required to be in an upright position at all times, and sleeps in a Danny Sling.

My 4th son Parker was born 1-9-13 and i planned on breastfeeding and everything had been going great until the last week or so .. hes started breaking out in a rash and his stools are very mucusy(sp).. Im almost positive its a milk allergy and soy allergy .. but well its been over 5 yrs since ive done this and with my 5 yr old i just switched him over to elecare .. instead of trying to take milk and soy out of my diet .. so any insight or help would be great as its starting to take a toll on me .. all the screaming and eating ever 10-15 mins and no sleep .. =( I dont want to stop breastfeeding .. however im at a point i just want to make him feel better =( ..
What a fantastic resource this forum is! I love how hell bennt has prompted posters to update their stories for us moms looking for answers and getting here through Google searches!
So, my turn…Really hope you guys can help! This is super long.
My daughter is going on 11 weeks old. I exclusively breastfeed her. At 3 weeks she started pulling her legs up to her tummy, writhing to have bowel movements, passing lots of gas, grunting, etc. At first I thought she just had to learn how to use her abdominal and pelvic floor muscles to have a bowel movement and I’m sure that was part of it. However, she then started having greenish-yellow mucousy stools. And her contortions and writhing were getting worse. They were waking her up in the middle of the night. (She and I co-sleep on a mat on the floor so I was very aware if how often she was bothered by it).
She also refluxed a lot, did a lot of throat clearing, wheezing, coughing/choking during/after feedings, etc. She had a red pimple-like rash on her cheeks, ears, and upper torso. We’ve dealt with redness around anus, diaper rash nearly every diaper, tight-sounding breathing, mouth breathing (instead of through nose), reflux, wet burps, curdled milk spit ups, wet hiccups repeatedly throughout day, frequent sneezing, etc.
I eliminated dairy (including hidden sources) and overnight her rash cleared except for a few spots here and there. Her diapers seemed a but better, but not where they needed to be. And she was still contorting and in pain.
She was the sweetest and happiest baby at first. When she stopped smiling for several days in spite of my best efforts to get her to smile, I started a TED (total elimination diet) based on Dr. Sears’ list.
A few days later she stopped contorting and her smiles came back! So worth it! But again her diapers didn’t go back to yellow/seedy. They were orange/runny or orange/what I call break-apart mucousy. (Looks mucousy, when I put two sides of diaper together and pull apart the mucous quickly separates).
I ran out of turkey February 2nd, so went to two grocery stores and they didn’t have any either. So, I bought and ate organic chicken. Her diapers went full, strong mucousy and greenish again – with one having blood speckles. I wasn’t sure if it was the chicken so I had it again, diapers got worse. Her rash started to spread. She got more gassy. I stopped eating the chicken, diapers went back to orange/runny/mucousy. Or what I call “dry” because there’s just stool residue/color on diaper but no substance to it.
As for the TED, she hasn’t gotten back to yellow/seedy. I felt mucous wasn’t right but read orange/runny can be in the range of normal. I tried not eating turkey…a bit better but not really. I tried not eating potatoes. I tried not eating rice (read some babies can have problems with it and there’s high levels of arsenic in rice).
I started looking at why Dr. Sears choose the foods he did and started looking into other less, allergenic foods. I started quinoa instead if rice because its supposed to be tolerated well and for the protein.
I have been eating quinoa, yellow squash, zucchini, pears, salt and pepper since February 6th.
On February 6, I tried avocado because I needed calories and fat. I was worried about my diminishing milk supply. I tried avocado February 6-9th. She seemed to be getting worse. But I also left her with her grandma alone for the first time on the 7th for an hour and a half. She cried a bit at the end. She was also fed pumped breastmilk from that morning. On the 8th, she only had wet diapers and no messy ones. I was hopeful thinking maybe we hit the right foods and her body was absorbing every last bit. But no, on the 9th she had green/mucousy diaper. She also had a very gurgly tummy and started contorting in her sleep. So maybe stress from babysitting? Maybe avocado? I stopped avocado on the 9th.
On the 10th the contortions stopped. But she had a green/mucousy diaper.
February 10, I only ate quinoa and yellow squash. February 11 I only ate quinoa. I’m hoping by going to only one food I can truly nip this in the bud. Her diapers are orange/mucousy.
I’ve now been dairy free for 6+ weeks and doing the TED, with tweaks, for over a month. I’m starving and confused. I read on this forum that babies can have a problem with complete proteins. Also, that mucousy isn’t good/normal and neither is green. I also read one person saying that baseline for TED is no smelly gas. But my daughter hasn’t had smelly gas. She had gas, doesn’t now. But her bowel movements frequently sound like wet gas being passed/diarrhea.
Also, I read a research study saying just two days of exposure to cigarette smoke can cause reflux. I live in an apartment where my neighbor is the manager and a smoker. We can smell second hand smoke in areas of our apartment where we have vents. We are trying to save enough money to move out of the apartment and actually away from this city (our city has some of the worst air quality in the country).
I read food intolerance/allergies can cause reflux. But can reflux cause bad diapers? (can the cigarette smoke cause reflux which then causes her to have bad diapers?)
My daughter is doing better than before. But I don’t know which way to go. I do feel that food is part/whole of the problem.
What is baseline for TED? Is it the lack of gas? Is orange/runny “normal” or is it yellow/seedy/creamy? How long do I wait after trying a food, realizing it’s a problem, and stop eating it before trying the next food? Just a few days after “lack of gas” or after other symptoms get better?
I’m sure I have more questions but I can’t remember them right now. I would really appreciate your help!
Topic: prevacid side effects???
my 10 week old baby started Prevacid a week and a half ago for possible reflux. It took about a week and I noticed he seemed to sleep a little longer at night, a 4 hr stretch a couple of nights – a record!
BUT, the last 2 nights, he’s not sleeping. He won’t fall back to sleep like before. He lays there and grunts, wiggles, and fusses. Falls asleep for a few minutes then does it again, for over an hour.
I started him Biogaia a week ago too. I’ve noticed he doesn’t vomit or spit up as much but he still arches his backs, cries uncontrollably, and acts like he’s in pain.
He’s also started a new thing, he seems very hungry in the mornings, will eat every hour from about 7am – 12. But he’s started to pull away after a full feeding, try to relatch, get frustrated and pull away again, and on and on. Crying as if he’s hungry but can’t get anything, because my boob is deflated.
He won’t take a pacifier, he just spits it out and acts like he is confused with the baby, maybe?
I also started Ovol (simethicone) a few days ago thinking its’ increased gas. Don’t notice anything different. I give it after each feeding. 25 ml.
Also the Prevacid is 15 mg. I was giving it once in the morning but just yesterday started twice per day, splitting the dose in half.
The doctor has no idea and isn’t familiar with Prevacid, so hoping to get the referrral soon to a specialist. I’m trying to figure it out myself and hoping I’m not making it worse.
Wondering if these new symptoms of acting agitated in the middle of the night are from Prevacid, causing increased gas, or constipation. He doesn’t pass that much gas. I bicycle his legs, elevate his bed, keep him upright, burp him, etc etc.
I’ve cut out dairy for about a week now, and tried 3 kinds of gripe water, nothing. Also saw a chiro a couple of times and have an appt tomorrow.
He naps a couple of times during the day, about 2 hrs. Overnight, he is eating every 2-3 hrs. Breastfeeding btw.
Any ideas?????
Topic: first time mommy to preemie
My son was born 5 wks early, so mildly premature. No serious issues, just digestive. Started on formula, until my milk came in a few days later. Had to give him EBM because he couldn’t latch on well enough, was soo tiny, just under 5 lbs. He’s now 10 wks, and growing well, over 9 lbs and fully breastfeeding now. It took awhile to get him latching on but we did it.
The issues from the beginning seemed to be gas, colic, not really sure. But the past two weeks it seems maybe its reflux and maybe has been all along? He now spits up more, vomits, but what really makes me think reflux is how uncomfortable he is after he eats and he cries so badly, nothing comforts him. He arches his back, makes faces like he has a bad taste in his mouth.
I convinced my dr to try Prevacid. He’s been on it since last Thurs and no improvement yet.
I try to keep him upright after eating, which is hard overnight. I sit up in bed to nurse him. Trying to get as much sleep as i can, but some nights he just won’t go back to sleep.
I tried to elevate his bed, but he ended up slumped down diagnally. So its less of an angle now. He sleeps in a cosleeper next to me.
Iv’e tried 3 different types of gripe water, no luck. We’ve been to see a pediatric chiropractor twice and are going again this week.
I’ve heard of probiotics and will look for them this week.
I’ve just cut out dairy. I tried to cut out yogurt before but was still eating cheese, now I’ve cut it all out.
Im single and this is so hard. The lack of sleep is killing me. I’ve tried carrying him a sling. I have a wrap that he tolerates for a little while, but it kills my back. I have a carrier that is the same. He cries after about 20 mins.
I’ve tried pushing him a stroller around the house, he cries. I’m constantly holding him and the only thing that consoles him is the boob. I’ve become a human pacifier. He wont take a pacifier, he spits them out. He used to, but then got on the boob which was great, but now he wants it all the time.
I swaddle him at night and turn the radio to static, real LOUD. Just started doing that and he’s now sleeping 3.5 hr stretches most nights. But will fuss sometimes for about 1.5 hrs, usually around 3 am.
I don’t know what else to try. I’m hoping the Prevacid will kick in soon. It’s killing me and making him miserable. I can’t recoup my back enough to use the carriers. (old injury so even sitting up in bed is hurting me.).
Would love ideas. I”ve probably heard them all but its nice to connect with others in the same boat. When/if I have more time, I’ll read through some more posts.
