My girl is 11 weeks old and she has acid reflux. The reason whe know it is because from 4 weeks old her feeding became worse (she only wanted to drink 4-5 minutes). And she started to spit up and she also became more restless and we could often hear how the milk is coming back into her throat (even a hour and a half after feeding) and we could see it hurts her. so the docter gave us losec. Now, the spitting up is better, but she still refuses to drink longer than 5 minutes (there are sometimes exceptions). I am breastfeeding and it seems as if I have a strong let down (and milk supply is also good). So I have to coaxed her in all ways to breast feed for longer periods so that she could get to the hind milk. I have to walk around while she drinks or wait a half hour and then try again. Sometimes she just outright refuses to nurse any longer (screams if I try). She has been sleeping so badly (day naps as well as night naps)…we had a few good nights, but I think the fact that she is drinking only 5 minutes let her wake up at night. And she sometimes have greenish stools. Does anyone else who are breastfeeding have the same problems? Any ideas?

Hi Hellbent,
Thanks for all the links. My GI said to me today “you must stop breastfeeding” really PO’d me b/c I tried really hard to get her off formula.
He wants to measure how much she’s ingesting & I don’t know if I can pump enough to *feed* her. I can never pump more than 2-3 oz, but DD can drink alot more somehow.
I’m so confused. I’ll try eliminating dairy & see what happens. It’s hard though b/c I’m already a whopping 105 lbs & 5’8″. I don’t want to lose anymore weight. All this worrying about DD is shrinking me.
from ‘groupie intro’
I did the elimination diet (more below)- this is to find out if there are any proteins being passed through your milk that are affecting your baby. The most common are milk and soy proteins. If your baby has an intolerance to these proteins it is referred to as ‘mspi’ (milk soy protein intolerance).

How old is she? Sophia has curdled spit up a lot. Our pediatrician told us it’s partially digested breast milk. Are you nursing or formula feeding?

Hello,
I am new to the boards, though I have been lurking for about a week. I have a 7 week old daughter who has been diagnosed with reflux. She was a c-section baby who choked twice while she was in the hospital and stopped breathing. We were told that it’s common for c-section babies and not to worry about it.
Yeah right!
My husband and I proceeded to stay up around the clock and watch her until she was two and a half weeks old. Our pediatrician then told us we needed to put her down to sleep. We did, and that night she choked, threw up and stopped breathing. We took her back to the ped. the next day and she was diagnosed with reflux. Since I’m breastfeeding, she had us try an elimination diet before any medication. We tried that for several weeks and she did better for a little bit. But, this weekend was the worst she’d ever been. We went back to the ped. today and finally started Prevacid.
I thought this would be a magical solution…until I found out we were given a pill. I tried to disolve it in water, but quickly realized that there are little beads in the pill that won’t disolve. So, I tried to give it to my DD in a siringe, but the beads were lighter than the water, so they wouldn’t all come out and I have no idea how much of the medication she actually got down. I did have another mom at the pharmacy overhear my situation and tell me I needed to go to an apothacary to have the medication made in to a suspension. I just can’t believe that the dr. would give us a pill for a 7 week old and not tell us to have it suspended. (Sigh)
I’m at the end of my rope…the ped. won’t put our daughter on an apnea monitor, so my hubby and I are taken turns staying up all day/night to watch her and make sure she doesn’t have any issues. I’m so exhausted and heartbroken. My baby girl looks at me and cries the most painful, heartbreaking cries and I can’t do anything to help her. She hardly sleeps and when she does, she wakes up crying in pain and then falls back asleep. Even when I lay her down to change her diaper, she screams in pain until we pick her up. I feel like a complete and total failure as a parent and the thought of waiting another two weeks for the medication to kick in just slays me. And, now she has to go to children’s hospital for an upper GI…just one more miserable thing that I can’t explain to her.
I feel like laying in a corner and crying…or sleeping!
On top of everything, I’m so concerned – or dillusional – that I thought she was having an allergic reaction to the medication. I thought she had a couple hives on her face, so now I’ve been watching every breath that she takes in just to make sure she’s ok. Plus, now I’m totally freaked out to give her any more medication. Maybe I’m hallucinating??
Anyway, sorry to ramble here but I needed to get it out and hope maybe I can find a kindred spirit out there who might know what I’m going through and has lived to tell about it.

Hi Kim,
How did you determine the allergies in your daughter? I think my daughter has food allergies but I have not been able to successfully determine them from an elimination diet (I am still breastfeeding). My daughter is 6 months old and she just started rice cereal. She has seemed to be in so much pain this week and so much worse, I’m wondering if she is allergic to rice.
Thanks,
Carol

If your breastfeeding you can keep a journal and just write everything you eat and how baby reacts daily. That is what I did with Justice and realized everytime I ate beef or dairy he and I both got sick. He would also break out in exzema everytime I ate either. Oh, he had horrible cradle cap that was even in his eyebrows that changed into exzema.

I have recently heard some other breastfeeding moms of reflux babies talk about infitus bifidus. They say once their baby was on it there symptoms cleared up. I think you would have to get it at a health food store. I tryed probiotics with Justice and never saw any results, but it’s worth a shot. I know I will be trying the infiitus bifidus with my next baby. Probably as soon as it comes out.
Those other moms swear by it.

there’s an article called ‘misconceptions of elemental formulas’ this should help a bit- it’s linked to from the ‘main’ MSPI [age- go to the MSPI forum & look for a top post called ‘MSPI what I have learned & Allergy info’

Boy am I glad I found this forum,I am learning a lot!
I am going thru a simular situation, and this thread is inspiring me to work harder to continue breastfeeding. I FF my son on soy until 5 weeks old, when I discovered I still had milk, and began nursing. After a couple weeks trying real hard to build up my supply, we were doing great, reflux wasn’t happening as often. Then he got sick,as I did,and he ended up in the hospital for 5 days w/ viral menningius. Most of that time I bottle fed him, as the body heat seemed to make his temp higher. I was sick as well, so my supply went down drastically, and I was getting only an hour or 2 of sleep . The soy formula seems to make the reflux worse, and he did have exzema, and they thought he may have an allergy to dairy. I am wondering if I can get my supply back up, (have only been nursing off & on,& pumping a few times a day so I won’t dry up) and nurse him exclusively he will improve?

i gave up as well when shane was a couple weeks old.. due to 2 reasons: infection @ c-section site (high fever..lots of pain…really sick).. & same reason as jill.. i thought it was my supply that was the problem.. but it was shanes reflux issues that made him WANT to eat constantly..so i thought the formula would satisfy him and that i couldnt!
BUT now that i know better and know more about reflux.. i truely wish i had stuck with the breastfeeding. I know now that if i had medicated him and or cut out dairy/soy earlier on..breastfeeding would have been easier. And i know expecially for a reflux baby that has a compromised digestive track, that breastmilk is the best for them! It is easily digested..andnot to mention that it has nutrients that cant be mimicked in formula. And if your baby ends up having a dairy/soy intolerance as most of the reflux babies do.. i think its EASIER and CHEAPER to cut the foods out of your own diet. ..then to keep switching formulas and going to the ridiculously expensive formula!
SOO.. those are just my two cents ;)!! If you do end up going to formula. .i would def. go to goodstart only because its digested easier.. and be ready to go to a hypo formula if problems persist.
I hope things get better.. and you learn tricks from other moms on here that have dealt with letdown issues..

That is SO hard to tell when they’re that little and crying so much. I definitely had that problem with both my sons. With my older son, I didn’t even know he had reflux for the longest time, so I fed him (or tried to) just about every time he cried. But really it made things worse (the more in the tummy, the more to reflux).
With my second son, I was more careful and tried not to overfeed. That being said, they often really are hungry every 2 hours or so at that age, maybe even more. My advice would be to try to get in a good feeding (where your daughter empties at least one breast) and then wait at least an hour and a half before feeding her again. That really cut down on my frustration with my first son when I finally stopped feeding him constantly. Maybe try other ways to soothe her cries in the meantime. Is she on any meds for the reflux pain yet?
I really hope this helps. Good luck!!

Kendra never complain of hunger either. I just offered her the B every 3 hours. With a bottle it was esier as i knew how much she ate ( i pumped after breastfeeding didn’t go well b/c of reflux)

My daughter is 4 weeks old and she cries a lot with her silent reflux. My question is how can you tell when she is hungry and not just in pain when she is crying. I don’t want to be underfeeding her (I breastfeed), but it is hard to tell when she is getting enough or not when she will most likely cry after eating anyways. Any suggestions?

I should probably post this in the MSPI forum, but I thought I would get more help from breastfeeding mamas here.
I started trialing yogurt with Ben about 11 days ago, and all seems to be going ok. He did come down with a cold about 5 days into the trial, but otherwise he is doing fine.
My question is… since he is now eating dairy himself, am I safe in consuming it also? I know this is silly, but I just don’t want to overwhelm his system by getting it both from the breastmilk and from the yogurt. Is this even possible????
