Topic: reflux? gas? bowel issues?
My 4 week old son has been on Zegerid/Mylanta for 1 1/2 weeks now. It seems to have helped his reflux issues (feeding issues), but I also cut out dairy completely from my diet as well, so I’m not sure which helped him most.
We still have issues (generally after a meal, but not all meals, and kind of unclear since sometimes he eats so often) where he grunts, cries out, pushes with his legs, arches (if he is laying on his stomach). We think we have narrowed it down to when he is trying to poop. He seems to finally poop and is then a happy camper. But his stools seem to be completely normal – watery, yellow, seedy. Sometimes they come out with a forceful gassy explosion, other times we are unaware he went.
I find myself questioning everything – does he really have reflux? Is it just a dairy intollerance? Or is it reflux and not the dairy thing? Dare I try to remove the Zegerid and see what happens? Or drink a milkshake?
Are the bowel issues because of the Zegerid or would he have them anyway? Ugh, it’s so overwhelming!things that may be of interest…
* he is solely bf
* weighed 6lbs 15oz at birth – was 8lbs 14oz today! (will be 4 weeks tomorrow) so no weight issues
* never spit up until we started zegerid, now spits up with almost every meal
* generally sleeps 4-5 hours first night stretch, then 3 after that.
* used to have bad gas – cried out and then tooted. haven’t noticed that in a while, but can’t recall when it stopped!
* he has clear skin, no diaper rash (so could it be lactose intollerance rather than dairy allergy? i.e. would I need to be off ALL dairy ingredients, or just lactose?)
* early issues were crying with feedings – pulling back from breast, obvious pain.
* gets hiccups all the time – usually regurgitates a little milk with them.
* he does tend to smell like sour milk.
I can’t think of anything else right now – feel free to ask if I missed anything important. I really appreciate any insight you all have given all that I have noted.
Topic: dazed and confused…
Hi there…
I am a new mother of a beautiful baby boy. Ethan is two months today. He gets mostly pumped breast milk. My pediatrician had suggested supplementing with one or two bottles of formula during the night because Ethan was constantly eating throughout the night. I could not keep up and was getting no sleep. I am self-employed and could/can not really take time off from work. I do work from home or take Ethan to the office with me when I can and I have a lot of family support to help me when I cannot. I have been supplementing since he was about 2 weeks old and things were going well. He only cried when he was hungry or when he was trying to pass gas.Anyway, about a week ago everything changed. He now cries in pain during and after every feeding. He went from eating 4-5oz of expressed milk every 3 hours to eating only 2-3 oz. He always had gas but it is now exacerbated and his belly becomes really bloated until he either passes the gas or has a bm. His gas now smells terrible and his bm are no better. The gas pains wake him up during the night a lot more than usual. He is now waking up every hour to hour and half trying to pass the gas. (I have been using gas drops for quite some time because they seem to make it easier for Ethan to burp). His stomach constantly churns and rumbles. He does not spit up. I’ve been to the doctors twice this week and they have told me that he has acid reflux. They prescribed Zantac which he has been taking since Thurs. However, there has not been any significant changes. I don’t understand why all of a sudden this is happening.I am at a loss and really confused. I don’t believe I have changed my diet significantly since last week but I am thinking that I must be eating something that caused the change in Ethan. I have avoided dairy for the most part. I am contemplating giving up breastfeeding and switching solely to formula. I realize the benefits of breastfeeding but I do not think I can handle doing the TED. My stress level is already at its peak. But I do know I cannot handle feeling so helpless watching my son go through this. Has anyone switched from breastfeeding to formula with success?Any thoughts/advice would be much appreciated. Thank you for your help.Topic: Fussy Eater… Help…
Hi,
I’m Karen, new to this forum. I have a post on the ‘New Members’ thread that sort of gives a history on me and my 10 week old son, Brady. Brady has GERD and is on 15mg Prevacid/day and 1 tsp Mylanta before each feeding. Those things seem to keep his GERD in hand. He’s also a belly sleeper, which helps a lot. I do have to give him Benedryl at night to keep the congestion at bay, but that too is manageable. However, he also has an immature digestive system… and this is where I am loosing my mind. Here’s the scoop…Brady was on breast milk and Enfamil with lipil for 4 weeks. The first two were awesome, because the ratio was 1:1 formula to milk. We noticed he was stuffed up all of the time, but thought nothing of it. Then, as he got hungrier and my body failed to keep up, it went to 2:1… that is when the trouble started. He was so congested he could barely breathe, and he was very fussy, particularly after meals when he was burped. My ped had us switch to Lactose free when I gave up breastfeeding at a month. No luck, he got worse… and stopped moving his bowels. Then we went to soy, but he hated it and there was no improvement. Finally, he is on Nutramegin, and it has helped his fussiness, as he has an immature digestive system. Also, he is on 15mg Prevacid/day and 1 tsp Mylanta before each feeding. This worked great until he hit 8 weeks. Then, he decided he hated Nutramegin. The ped told us to try the Enfamil with Lipil again… he LOVED it, but it made him terribly uncomfortable, unconsolable. We tried Alimentum yesterday, and he projectile vomited it. Back on Nutramegin, with him fighting it every step of the way (he cries through feedings).Nutramegin tastes like battery acid (I tried it). Not that Enfamil with Lipil is much better, but apparently Brady likes it a whole lot better, despite the fact that it causes him agony.Does anyone know of anything I can add to make it taste better? I am thinking Karo syrup, but that could give him the runs. Juice apparently is not recommended because it can cause a condition that makes carbohydrate absorption problematic if given too early. I am also thinking of thickening with rice, but don’t want to bind him up.Help me… I have a hungry kid (cries when he is hungry) who won’t eat… I am going nuts…So we have been given the thumbs up from our ped GI and his RD to start solids when we are ready. I am still alittle hesistant, but DH wants to start ASAP. Cooper will officially be 5months on Monday. He has great head control, is almost sitting unassisted and is very interested anytime we are eating, so I do think that he is ready. I am just scared to death of him having an allergy or worse it affecting his reflux negatively. I know I can’t put off the inevitable, but I was all pumped to wait until 6 months. But I am willing to try. If he does well how do I gage his formula intake? Right now he gets 4oz b/t 2-4am and luckily he is content with only 4oz, I am working on getting rid of this feeding however it is nice b/c then I can give him his prevacid at 6:30am and he is content to wait until 7am for his first bottle. He then gets 7oz at 7am, 10:30am, 2pm, 5:30pm and 7-8oz at ~8pm or whenever he is ready for bed, but definatly by 8:30pm. Do I continue to make the 7oz bottles and let him tell me when he is done? Cut them down to 6oz and see how he does? I am so confused with the whole adding solids thing. I know he won’t be taking much at first, but I have a feeling he is going to be a good eater as we have never had any problems with bottle/breast when we were doing that… I don’t want to starve him, but I also don’t want to turn him into a little porker if you know what I mean. TIA.
Topic: Zantac and Green Poopy?
Hello,
We just determined out 2 week old has reflux. The doctor prescribed Zantac. After giving it to her the first time she had green poop–normally its the seedy yellow stuff that all babies have when breast-feeding.
Is this normal? Is the dosage too much and giving her diarrhea?
