Hi I am new to this forum. I have a 15 week old preemie, 4 weeks adjusted, who is on compounded Prevacid for reflux. When she was in NICU, they gave her meds to her in her bottle of breastmilk and told us to do the same (about 40ccs), twice a day. So, since discharge 1 1/2 months ago, we have been giving it to her exactly that way, during her 6 o’clock feedings. I just found out that she is supposed to be getting it on an empty stomach and by itself from another preemie mom either 1/2 hour before feeding or 2 1/2 hours after feeding. I can’t believe that they told us differently in NICU. No wonder my baby is still having reflux issues. My question is, for compounded Prevacid, should it be flavored? If so, what flavor works best? Is there anything else that I should know about it? Our pharmacy puts an expiration date on for 30 days, but I have seen some posts that it is only good for 2 weeks. Which should it be? Thanks in advance!
Hello everyone. My daughter Turi, is now 4 and a half months old. When she was six weeks old, we rushed her to the hospital because we thought that she was having seizures. She would stiffen up her arms and legs, her bottom of her face would go straight (like a grimace) and then she would scream in pain after wards. She also was making some really wierd ‘snorting’ noises, and she was constantly catching her breath, like you do after a big cry???? Anyways, they could not find anything wrong with her after being in the hospital for three days, all MRI’s and EEG’s came back normal. And we brought her home. She was perfect up until June 24th, when she was just over four months old. She started with just a very big, and it seemed that she was in pain, and just cried and cried. That day, she started with these same “Seizures” again, but this time wasnt crying out in pain, and not really stiffening her body up so much. These were occuring every few minutes. And she still had the same ‘snorting’ noises. I went with her to my neighbors, and she suspected that it was gas issues. Turi had lots of gas and was burping and she settled right down, but still had the face stiffening and the noises. The next day, she was perfect. I stayed up with her all night just to make sure that she kept breathing. All was well since. Three days ago, she started screaming, appeared to be in pain, and this all started again. However, she did not poop that day, and we could hear her insides just churning. And it seemed like everytime she had one of these episodes, which ranged sometimes once every two minutes, to once every ten minutes, right afterwards she would have a burp. Her stomach felt very hard, so I tried a suppository on her, which did nothing, until the next morning when she finally had a huge crap, and it was a normal poop, the ‘seedy’ breastfed ones, earlier this week they were very dark….I had tried to put a bit of formula in her breastmilk, and I’m sure that affected her poop, and possibly her guts. When she originally was in the hospital a few months ago, the idea of “reflux” was brought up to us, that this might have caused the episodes.
We took her to a neurologist today, and showed her the video of what was occuring with her yesterday, and she mentioned infantile spasm, but yet said that it didnt ‘match’ alot of her symptoms. Plus she also said that Turi is very overdeveloped for a baby her age. She also said the same for seizures, that it just all doesnt add up. Can anyone help me?? My husband and I are just so scared….and dont know where to look for help because we are not wanting to ‘overthink’ this. We went back to the hospital for another EEG, and all came back perfect, no signs of any seizures or infantile spasm. The neurologist said that now that they ‘think’ it may have something to do with her insides, possibly reflux. We are just at our wits end, trying to figure out WHAT is wrong with her, and why she does these ‘episodes’ with her face and body, and breathing, for at least 24 hours when this hits her. I am breastfeeding, pumping and making bottles. However, I always have about 2 litres of milk pumped, which I then mix all together and make up her bottles for the next day or two. So anything that I may have ate, would be SO diluted by using this method of doing her bottles. And she has at least 12 five ounce bottles of the exact same milk…so if something was bothering her, would not ALL the bottles then affect her?? It just doesnt make sense, and we really want our little girl to be ‘ok’. But we have no info on reflux, and how babies react to it.
When I found this site, I was hoping that someone can help me. I’m not sure how easy it is to read the replies on here, but you could also email me at dbjohnson@mts.net
Thank you SO very much in advance for your replies!!

My 9 week old is breastfed and has reflux. He has some wheezing at times so they sent him for a swallowing test. It showed that he aspirated on one of his gulps. He has been thriving and gaining well and is happy; however, they are telling me I need to thicken his feedings which means an end to the nursing. I am getting conflicting advice and have been told by some that the little bit of breast milk will not hurt. Anyone know?
Hello all,
I’m feeling kind of sad and know that you will all tell me that it’s okay and my dh will look at me strange if I go to him with this…..I had to throw away my breastmilk today and it’s a long time coming thing I had to do. When I first had to switch Owen to formula my doc said “oh, don’t throw it away, you may use it later” but in my mind I knew I didn’t want to even go there after all we had been through. There was certainly a lot of it and it was just taking up room, but I worked very hard for it all……. Crazy!I had been looking at it in the freezer thinking I should pitch it for some time now, but today I just went through with it. Why is it that I feel like I have somehow failed as a mother b/c of not being able to BF??? My child is finally healthy….. I should be overjoyed!I wasn’t able to donate, I did look into that b/c I take a daily med and the milk has to be med free.
I’m really very pleased with where Owen is right now, I just never went through this with Griffin, I got to choose when I was done breastfeeding! Thanks for listening!!!
Topic: What should my priority be?
Hi, everyone. This is my first post, though I’ve been reading here for quite awhile.
Some background– My son is just about 4 months old and has mild reflux and MFPI. I’m breastfeeding and on a fairly limited diet. Though his symptoms aren’t gone completely with my diet changes, he’s much improved and it seems to be controlled for the time being.
In the first few weeks of his life, my husband and I swaddled him and put him in the swing to sleep. He did really well with it– at two months he even did a few nights with 7 hour stretches! (So we know he’s capable!) About a month ago, though, we started to try to put him in the bassinet (which is set on an incline)– and things went downhill. He started waking up much more often and would cry for hours at a time when we tried to put him back to bed (after nursing). So we went back to the swing so that we could all get some sleep. But we really want him to be able to sleep in the bassinet/crib, without being swaddled, and soon– for lots of reasons! Primarily, I’m reading that “motion sleep” does not allow him to achieve the deep sleep he needs in order to truly be rested. I also feel like he’s unsafe being swaddled still as he’s strong and can get out of it.
So, here are my questions: First, what should my priority be– getting him into the bassinet or out of the swaddling? Second, how do I do it?!? Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I started shedding really badly after having Sarah and it got worse once I stopped breastfeeding (4 months). My hair dresser said it takes up to a year for your hormones to balance out and return to normal. At least that gives you something to look forward to!!??
I’m sure it’s hard because you probably never planned on having to give Griffin formula and give up breastfeeding & that special connection with him. I think that’s one thing that makes it so hard for me to give it up is that I hoped to never have to give my babies formula. With Bryce and his need of a liquid diet for so long its just nearly impossible to keep giving him breast milk until he’s off the feeding tube.
