InactiveI cannot believe I finally found a website that describes my son to a T.
We are on neocate and I have a freezer full of breastmilk that will never get used. The one thing about it is that we are finally sleeping better 4-5 hrs at a time. My son had a feeding tube after completely stopping eating and then a hospitalization. Neocate is expensive and it’s horrible that they can charge so much for the only thing that has worked for us. Target had the best price at $30.79 a can, I live in Nebraska. I even work for a hospital and explained the situation to them and the “best” they could do for me was $35. My sister works for a gastro doc and says it’s actually $27 a can at cost. Call your local hospitals and ask for cans and ask them to call their reps to see if they will give you a couple free cans. Believe me I’ve poured out my sad story to everyone because we don’t qualify for any assistance and I’ve gotten 6 or 7 cans for free. Also ask your doctors office if they keep cans from reps. My doc gave me 4 cans to try when we first started out with MSPI because it really does take a couple of weeks to a month to see if it works for your child. My child had a feeding tube and the whole nine yards so I know your pain.March 27, 2007 at 9:34 pm #28735In reply to: Reply To: Falling Apart

InactiveMy psych is an @ss but unfortunetly the only one who will take my insurance within a 2 hour radius. I told him about my thoughts of self harm and how close I came last Thursday and that didnt seem to change his oppinion.
Since its more than just PPD, My OB wont touch it either. I tried that route in the beginning.
I feel like Im hitting brick walls.
“what if you killed yourself? God forbid. what if you harmed your child? what would he say then? “oh at least she was breastfeeding?”
please. what if he were responsible for you doing something harmful because he wouldnt prescribe you anything?”
I said the same thing to DH and told him if ever did something stupid to sue the crap out of the doctor 🙁

InactiveI am still breastfeeding—- he is pretty happy little kid. Though I have noticed that recently he has been not so quick to smile. Granted we are having a little bit of the sniffles now.
I just wish I could figure out what is going on—–Gawd why can’t he talk?????

Inactivei guess i should clarify…i didn’t say that i was opposed to breastfeeding, because i would probably say that i am a “huge advocate”, but i think it is a medical professionals responsibility to take care of his/ her patient, not promote personal views like bf in place of meds. i have a good friend who has two sons and is bipolar. during her first pg she stopped her lithium, continued prozac and started lithium again as soon as max was born and did not bf. she stopped her lithium again during the second pg, but did not start it and bf after sam was born, on her prozac…happy mom, happy baby…but she also had far lower lows than she has had before. her drs were committed to find meds for her that worked for her situation. for the original poster, i am thinking of you. i hope you feel better soon…

Inactivezoloft is safe while breastfeeding. this is what most ob’s prescribe for PPD. i am not sure i understand this “breastfeeding” at all costs to the mother anyway…these days with your daughter are so precious, you will not get this time back. i know, even with reflux, food intolerances, and food aversions, i have vague recollections of my daughter’s first year, mostly crying (me, that is) and barf (hannah’s). but my family tells me, what a joy and beauty to behold she was (and still is). everyone here will tell you that there is no superwoman-mommy, breastfeeding, leaping over depression in a single bound. i have an extremely strong family (my brother committed suicide) and individual history of depression (had taken meds twice before) i “braved” it out until my daughter was 13 months old. i got treatment when i realized i felt like i’d be better off dead…been taking meds ever since. thank gd for them, i can really handle everything now — not that i am supermommy, but it doesn’t hurt to try
…please, please, please dump your doctor and get someone who cares about both of you…i was lucky enough to go see this woman, karen klienman:

send her an email. she can definitely give you the information you need.

InactiveLaura~
This is one of my FAVORITE posts! I am a very strong believer in breastfeeding and, until you are faced with a child that can not take your milk, you do not know what it feels to have to make that decision. I think that the breastfeeding forum was a perfect place for the post to be. There are so many of us who have dealt with this and it is so very hard to understand. Thanks for being the “information QUEEN”!!!!

InactivePlease read this. As I said earlier, I’m not sure if Dr. Newman is well known in the US b/c he lives in Canada, but he is recognized as a leader throughout the world.
I’m attaching a link on one of his articles about prescription drugs while breastfeeding. Please read it. If you scroll down to the part where he lists several drugs that are safe during breastfeeding, he specifically lists “tricyclic antidepressants, zoloft, paxil, and other antidepressants”.
Here’s a link to the article I’ve referred to above:
http://www.thebirthden.com/You%20Should%20Continue%20Breastf eeding%20(1)-January%202005.doc
***I’m editing this b/c I’m having trouble opening the above link by clicking on it. To get to the article I’ve been talking about (if you can’t open the link either) click on the link I have below. That one will take you to Dr. Newman’s main page. Scroll down where it says articles, and I think it’s around the 15th one or so, entiled “you should continue breastfeeding (1) drugs”… or something like that.***
I have seen him several times as he is in our city and corresponded with him via email when I was too ill to see him directly and he is SO amazing. If you want more information but are not comfortable emailing him, please let me know. I will do it for you.
Also, here’s a link to his web page that sites his credentials:
http://www.thebirthden.com/Newman.html
I find it so sad when a mother feels that she has to choose between breastfeeding her baby and her own health. Dr. Newman gave me comfort to realize that isn’t usually the case.
Best of luck.

InactiveMy hospital was just getting into recognizing Post Pardum Depression after I had Sarah. They had me fill out all sorts of questionaires at my 6 week post partum check-up on how I was feeling. I told my doc. that my baby blues had gone away but I DID question him about medicines and breastfeeding and he said there were meds. he would have prescribed if I needed them. Sorry, I know that doesn’t help you much but there ARE doctors who feel differently than yours.
I personally think we should all thank Brooke Shields b/c without her book this issue may not have gotten the recognition it deserved! I hope you are able to be put on something to help you. YOU deserve to be happy so you can enjoy your gorgeous little gal!
BTW – How did you do the slide show? It’s soooo cool and I’d love to do one too!

InactiveOh Laura,
I am by no way trying to wean him yet. I am still breastfeeding him pretty much as much as I was before. I just know that developmentally he was ready a couple of months ago (right before a really bad patch) and just want him to get some of the experience of eating from a spoon and all the different flavors and textures. Plus it is nice to take some food with us to a restaurant to “stay” off his hunger for an hour so that we can all have a dinner together. But I plan on keep on breastfeeding him primarily for at least a year +. But thanks for the info!Kim

InactiveHUGS HUGS HUGS! Please talk to your doctor. If they don’t know what you can take and have concerns then have them contact Dr. Jack Newman. He is the leading breastfeeding guru and is situated here in Toronto. He is known worldwide a leader in breastfeeding. He answers emails and also telephone calls. He knows everything about which drugs are safe to take and which aren’t. He sent me an email and corresponded with me when I had to take medications when bf Hailey. His email is drjacknewman@sympatico.ca . I can give you his number as well if you’re interested.

InactiveI did not suffer from PPD but I had very severe Post Partum Anxiety. I do not have a supportive spouse and all he did was criticize me for my post partum emotionality and anxiety. It was a very, very difficult time in my life to say the least.
I would recommend that you talk to your doctor.
I have a friend who has severe anxiety and she was told she could take Zoloft during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
Do you have a Pastor or clergy person you trust who you can talk to about the stresses you are under? You need some support and it doesn’t sound like you are getting it at home.
Good luck and please take care of yourself.

InactiveOh my gosh, you do not need to stop antidepressants while breast feeding (or during pregnancy for that matter)! Now I’ve never told anyone in this forum this before, but I am a pharmacist. I’ve never mentioned it because I didn’t want people to think I should know more about the medical treatment of infant reflux than I did – they don’t teach us that in pharmacy school! As well, I have suffered from depression since my late teens, and have been on antidepressant medications almost continually since my early 20’s.
Women with clinical depression are much more at risk of developing post partum depression than the average. Add to it the stress and fatigue involved in raising a refluxing baby, the depression can be very, very rough for both you and your spouse! I too had harmful thoughts, with both pregancies and after, and I know how frightening it can be! It’s not rational thought, but you can’t help it if your brain chemistry is altered. That is why many psychiatrists feel it is more detrimental to you and your baby to leave the depression untreated, than to have the baby exposed to the minimal amounts of antidepressant that crosses into the breast milk.
With that being said, some antidepressant are much safer during BF than others. Clinical research has shown that Zoloft (also called sertraline) is the safest during BF, because very little of the drug enters the breast milk, and there are essentially no harmful effects on baby. Your doctor should be able to find lots of liturature to support the use of Zoloft during pregnancy – they likely don’t want to treat you with meds because they don’t know better. Here is a link to drgreene.com that discusses Zoloft and BF.
http://www.drgreene.com/21_24.html
I took Zoloft while breast feeding both of my children. I feel it was the best choice for me, because I know what happens when I’m off meds. I could be harmful to myself, or heaven forbid, my child.
Please, please seek help from a knowledgeable doctor, preferably a psychiatrist. Don’t try to tough it out! And remember, you are not alone! Feel free to ask my anything, anytime, because we have a lot in common. I know we are not supposed to give medical advice in this forum, so let me say that this is all my personal opinion, as someone who has been there and done that.
