what’s the connection between gas and reflux?
Gas is created when something isn’t digested properly; for example,
beans are generally harder to digest than other foods, which is why
they are notorious for causing gas in most people (they are generally
not a common problem with breastfed babies through mom’s milk, though;
this is just a common example to help make sense.)
Also, gas puts pressure on the esophageal sphincter (the muscle at the
top of the stomach that helps move and keep things down), making it
easier for whatever is in the stomach to be refluxed.

You are not a bad mom!! You know her best. DH doesn’t feed her and care for her all the time like you do.
My dh gave me a very hard time about it all too. He told me it was my anxiety that caused Myles to not want to eat. He flipped out every time I called the doctor and he made me feel guilty for subjecting Myles to testing. In the end I WAS RIGHT, and it’s a good thing I listened to my motherly instincts and not my dh. As soon as Myles was on the high dose of Prevacid that marci-kids recommends things turned around and Myles stopped fighting and fussing with feedings.
It is NOT normal for a baby to fight and fuss while eating. Pain free babies enjoy eating. It is comforting and relaxing for them and they only refluse when they’ve had enough. Myles refused to eat continually and I KNEW something was wrong. If I had listened to dh Myles would probably have a full fledged feeding aversion. We narrowly avoided one because he was over five months old by the time we got him on the high dose of Prevacid he needed and by that time he had learned that the breast and/or bottle meant pain.
You are a good mommy and you are doing what’s right for your baby. Keep working on getting her dose increased. Have you shared the marci-kids info with her doctor? If he won’t hear it try another doctor. Sometimes family doctors are more inlined to prescribe the higher doses. They see adult patients with GERD all the time and they seem more sympathetic about how painful it is.
Sending prayers and hugs.

I have three boys, ages 5, 3 and almost 2. My oldest had reflux that was bad but not compared to some that I had read on the website. It was controllable with meds and life got better quickly. My youngest two had MSPI, with the baby being VERY sensitive. With the youngest I could not even use Alimentum or Nutramigen due to the heightened sensitivity. Breastfeeding was it! It almost seems like the more kids I have, the worse it gets. While we finally found a dr who would validate my issues (pediatrician said no such thing as sensitivity – either allergic or not, which is NOT what our experience was), I have not been able to figure out if this is going to be an issue if we have any more children.
As I am sure many of you know, the diet is often hard to follow when you are trying to ensure as a breastfeeding mother that you don’t ingest ANYTHING that will cause the pain. It got easier with the more info I gathered (and this website and others were SO helpful) but still I dread that part. However, kids are just gifts and lucky for us the problems subsided by around 9 months so I know I can do it.
Does anyone know if this is to be expected with my next child, should we decide to try again and if it will be even worse? Are there any guidelines on when you should stop drinking milk, etc? Anything that can be done prior to giving birth that might make a difference?
Thanks for any advice. I really feel for you ladies dealing with this right now because I remember it being so hard and feeling like I was at the end of my rope. I do think this website and the things I learned from it gave me the ability to help others. There were other people around me whose babies had this but no one had any clue until they started eliminating. Hang in there!

I relate to the feeling “i wonder if there is some other problem”. I felt that a lot early on and didn’t think anyone really wanted to help. Then meds started to kick in and you know the rest…life got better.
Maybe you could stick out the increased meds for a few more days, if nothing improves then you will be one step closer to an answer of some kind. I don’t know much about breastfeeding, as I wasn’t able to do it but have you seen a lactaction consultant recently…maybe they could give you some advice of some kind- even if it is, oh yes I see this a lot in babies with reflux- might set you mind at ease there is nothing else going on?
Lots of us mums can relate to yelling at kids, husbands, dogs etc and feeling absolutely sh*t about it. But its OK. Its part of life and the kids, husbands, dogs etc will survive and love you regardless. A few negative moments in a lifetime in no way negate the 1000’s of positive ones.
HappyMommy you will be a happy mommy soon

from the upper right hand corner of the screen, there’s a button ‘settings’ & from there there’s ‘profile’ & then ‘signature’
if you could put baby’s age, meds, dose(s), breastfed/formula, etc
then we can all help you better by not bugging you each time about your baby

my first thought is that nap time won’t be your problem, it’ll be theirs
..but that’s not a great answer
as for bed time, I’ve always been one to say you gotta do whatever works…I’m not one to ‘do’ anything…I go from breastfeeding baby to sleep until it doesn’t work anymore and then I do whatever it takes
like rocking baby…at this point, Jonah doesn’t ‘need’ to be rocked to sleep- it’s just a part of our bedtime routine and it lets me cuddle a big 3 & 1/2 yr old who otherwise doesn’t want to cuddle that much with his mama
. I don’t rock him to sleep- he’s wide awake when he gets into bed
now, middle of the night wakings, that’s a whole ‘nother story
. I did do a sort of CIO but it was only WHEN I KNEW FOR SURE HIS REFLUX was UNDER CONTROL- I posted all about my ‘method’ somewhere…

Thanks…I still don’t know how I did it
for some reason this time it just worked.

Yay you got a picture of Brianna to work! Soooo cute!!! What a doll!

Men are so funny. He won’t ask for directions when we are lost, but he does read manuals; cover to cover! And he keeps the manual for everything we own! I mean everything. He had the manual for the 30 year old water softner that we just replaced. I guess the previous homeowner was just like my dh because he had it put away and he passed it on to us.

Amy, My DH is the same as yours…he just figures out how to do it…thanks to that, everytime you go to turn the fan off in Brianna’s room, her light flicks on.
So glad to hear about Sarah…Brianna loved the “how big is Brianna” thing too. It is just amazing how babies learn everything. Thanks for your well wishes!
Christine, when my husband is trying to figure something out, I think I will just ask you to ask your DH how it works!

Emily – Sarah is doing FANTASTIC! I almost can’t believe how happy of a baby I have. These past few months have been amazing with her and it’s soooo cool to watch her grow and learn. She does the “How big is Sarah?” thing now where she throws her arms up. Mind blowing to realize that she can understand what I’m saying and respond. Love it though!
Thanks for asking! Hope your PMS is tolerable and you can enjoy a few weeks before it STRIKES AGAIN! Oh also, I’ve tried putting a few pictures in Lilypie that say they’re too big. I don’t change the setting on my camera so I’m still clueless why some pictures are too big and some aren’t??
Christine – I am happy to hear that there are MEN in the world who even READ instructions/directions! My DH always wants to see if he can do it himself first…then after 3 hours of messing it up, he’ll dig out the directions. MEN!

Emily,
I had this problem once when trying to load pics for ebay. DH said I had to re-take the pictures at a lower resolution. If you have a digital camera you can usually set the resolution for low/medium/high resolution. It’s great to have someone in the house that can read and understand the manual, and that wouldn’t be me!
DH lays in bed at night reading manuals. Last night it was the manual for our new water softner.

Amy, you did amazing to last four months…I almost quit so many times (I assumed it was my fault Brianna was having her problems). If it wasn’t for my mom, I would have quit, but she just wouldn’t let me. But if there is something I have learned, breastfeeding doesn’t make you a good mom (although it does keep you away from PMS!!!haha!), loving your child is what makes you a good mom! And you do that ten times over!!!
I must say…looking back on it breast feeding was pretty darn good. I know it was the best for Brianna…but the perks for me weren’t to darn bad either!
However..my old size A’s now fit again…i think I was just hit with a double whammy…engorgement from stopping BF and AF making her 2 year debut!!! That is what made my pain so bad. (thanks for asking how I was doing though) How is Sarah? She is just such a cutie pie in her picture…I can’t even figure out how to get my picture of Brianna to upload. Lillypie keeps telling me it is too big, but I don’t know how to shrink it

AF really hit me hard after I stopped breastfeeding. I didn’t realize HOW heavy and awful those first few periods would be!!!
I bf for 4 months and lost most of my baby weight but actually the last 10 pounds didn’t come off until AFTER I stopped. I read somewhere that your body holds on to some fat stores to help with milk production, which makes sense.
I had issues BF Sarah b/c of her reflux (didn’t know the correlation at the time) but I’ll defnitely try harder with baby #2.
Yes, Emily how is your engorgement?
AnonymousInactive
I have to agree with Christine on that one. Not only can you eat anything you want and not gain a pound, but you lose all your pregnancy fat really fast too. At least I did. My MIL thought I was anorexic when I nursed my first son, but I ate as much as my husband! Breastfeeding definitely has benefits for both the baby & the mommy
Emily – How’s your engorgement doing now, by the way? Any better?
