To me the greatest thing about breastfeeding (besides the best food in the world for baby) was I could eat anything and not gain a pound, and I didn’t have to deal with menstruation.
You do miss those benefits when your done.

InactiveAmy,
I had to add…being a girl that was formerly an A-…these D’s for the past two years have been kind of nice (well now they are closer to B’s…but still nice
). Urgh…my special friend came to visit yesterday…I haven’t seen her in almost two years too…now I am thinking (as I scarf as much junk into me as my bloated body will take) breastfeeding was great! Why did I stop (Just kidding, but hopefully some will get a chuckle out of that one!)
Happy Wednesday.

Inactivei also think its something else other than reflux. shane went through it for 2 weeks where he hardly wanted his bottle as well. i was stressing soo bad! i still am not sure why, but i think it was his teeth… and than he got a cold. i too think it might be the teeth or his ear.. i guess i would get it checked out. how is he otherwise?? cranky at all during the day or only when breastfeeding?
i hope he feels better soon!!

InactiveIt was hard to make it the year, and towards the end, after Brianna had been eating yogurt and cheese OK, I let up on myself a little and had a slice of pizza here and there, but it is worth it and I will do it again in a heartbeat for our next child if I need too! Here is what I did…I got myself a starbucks gift card with $70 on it (actually, my mom got it for me, when I told her I was going to go to Starbucks a ton after I was done BF Brianna) and told myself I could go to starbucks as often as I wanted too once I had weaned Brianna..well I go at least once a day now!

in forum General Feeding IssuesAnonymous
InactiveI am primarily breastfeeding, but I’m not able to pump enough out when I work to hold Coda over. She’s allergic to both the dairy AND soy based milks~ she projectile vomits, screams, gets gassy and has the explosive watery foul stools indicitive of protien sensitivity ( BTDT with my DS).
So, the ped suggested nutramagen or the similac version~ but isn’t it dairy based? if she’s reacting to the protiens, how will it help?
I was fortunate enough to exclusively breastfeed DS with his DSPI, but with her, I have to work at least part time.

KeymasterI’m not sure what to tell you but if you’re desperate I’ve read tips on what to do for a nursing strike-
try and have lots of skin to skin contact, try feeding in the bath (sounds weird but hey you fed him in the bouncy seat, lol), try lying down (can be belly to belly/skin contact here too)
http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/baby/back-to-breast.html
Also: maybe you can get a prescription for carafate to see if this helps (it’s a kind of prescription strength mylanta-type medication to coat the esophogus to allow it to heal)
do you have any zantac left? give that too, mixed w/ mylanta to kill the taste, & give it at least 2-5hrs seperate from the zegerid

InactiveAnd let me just add that I envy you being able to eat what you want finally!
I would love to breastfeed Ben for as long as I did my daughter, but at this rate, we’ll be lucky to make it a year!
What I wouldn’t give for some chocolate and coffee!

InactiveI’ve seen so many posts along these lines and prayed that it would never be an issue for us, but I guess we aren’t that lucky. Ben’s eating has been getting progressively worse for about the last week or so. First he would eat fine, but would try to stuff his fingers in his mouth during the feed or would turn his face away – down, toward my hip. Then he would only eat from one side.
On Saturday morning, he had a really really hard time eating. Only ate for about 5 minutes and then would scream if I tried to offer him more. I finally got more into him by hanging my breast over his mouth while he sat in his bouncy seat!
This happened again on Sunday for the 2nd feed of the day. The other feedings on Saturday and Sunday were okay.. not great, but he did eat some.
Now today… this morning he ate okay. He didn’t eat for as long as he used to, but I was thrilled that he seemed okay. But, at his second feed, all hell broke loose. He was obviously hungry, but when I would move to put him to the breast, he would arch and scream hysterically. He latched on for maybe a second and that was it – totally refused to eat at all.
I was in tears, and my 3 year old came in the room and said, “mommy, just give him some medicine.” She handed me the Mylicon, which I gave to him. I tried again to feed him.. no luck. He was refluxing a lot and swallowing really hard throughout all of this. But I finally got him to start sucking on my finger and I just moved him to the breast and switched out the finger for my nipple. He started to suck, but wimpered the whole time like he was in pain. Once my milk let down, however, he seemed fine. He still ate for much less time than normal, but I was so glad to get something into him at least!
I just can’t figure out what is going on. He did wake up on Sunday sounding very congested. His nose doesn’t seem stuffed up though. It’s more like it’s wet in the back of his throat.
Any ideas on what’s going on and what I can do?
He isn’t teething I don’t think – at least his gums aren’t red and he’s not drooling and when he bites on things, he does it at the back of his mouth.
Also, he started biting down on my nipple a couple of days ago too. I have OAL, but he started the clamping down well into the feed, so I know it’s not him trying to slow the flow at that point.
Any thoughts you have would help. I am freaking out here.

InactiveEmily – Had to laugh about DH liking the engorgement.
I tell you what, I am the one who misses the larger boobs! I feel like I’ve been left with pancakes!!! I can now understand why many moms who breastfeed end up getting impants. Personally, I never would…but I can understand why!!!!!January 7, 2007 at 8:16 pm #21884In reply to: after weaning from breastfeeding

InactiveHey, hope this isn’t too late to help, but try cold instead of heat. Heat only invigorates the blood which is actually what causes the engorgement. What you should do if you haven’t totally weaned her, is to apply a well wrapped ice pack to the breast for no more than 30 minutes after your last feed. This will help remind the body not to produce as much milk for the next feed. If this was the only feed left of the day, I would try the ice whenever you are uncomfortable.
You will freeze your you no what’s off, but I swear it works! I did this when my milk came in and after Ben dropped his middle of the night feeding. I would just tuck the packs inside my bra. It is freezing at first, but you get used to it. You could also try wetting a diaper or a nursing pad, freezing them and using that too. A diaper might be too big unless you have any of the teeny tiny newborn ones left over.
Hope it helps!

InactiveYou know what is weird…we weaned super gradual (like a week or more in between feedings). I didn’t really have this same problem for the other feedings, i might have been a little bit engorged for a day or two, but then i was fine….after we dropped this last feeding I was fine for a few days, and then boom, the “rocks” (my little nick name) came…and I can’t get them to go away! I will try the motrin..so far I haven’t taken anything. No red streaks so that is good, but I will keep my eye out for that. On a funny side note, I don’t think my husband is in any hurry for this engorgement to go away!
Thanks everyone!January 6, 2007 at 9:48 pm #21814In reply to: after weaning from breastfeeding

InactiveI always did my weaning gradually so I didn’t really have that problem at all. If it gets too uncomfortable you might want to try pumping and then just gradually lessen the time you pump and increase the time between pumping. Eventually you’ll get to the point that you don’t need to pump at all. Shouldn’t take too long since you’ve only been nursing/pumping at night. (I know that’s a big pain, but it’s another option so you don’t have to be uncomfortable
). Just an idea. Hope you’re feeling better soon.January 6, 2007 at 8:49 pm #21805Topic: after weaning from breastfeeding

InactiveWas this the first feeding you’ve dropped? It will probably take a few days for your body to adjust it’s milk production. I remember all too well the discomforts of being engorged. I didn’t think I’d ever be able to sleep on my stomach again!
Red streaks are the signs of infection so keep an eye out for those. Otherwise, I’d say take some pain reliever and hopefully things will feel more “normal” in a few days.January 6, 2007 at 8:37 pm #21800In reply to: Reply To: after weaning from breastfeeding

InactiveMine were like that for a while too when I stopped pumping. I was taking Motrin for the pain and hot showers when I could to relieve some of the pain. The hot shower would sometimes allow some of the milk to flow out without stimulating more production like pumping does. It was miserable for a few weeks but gradually it subsided.
So, I think it’s pretty normal as long as there’s no fever and no red streaks on your breasts. That’s what I was told to look for.
I hope you’re feeling better soon.
