Both of my boys had to be on Nutramigen. Looking back, I think my youngest son should have been on Neocate or Elecare (very hypoallergenic formulas). It is heartbreaking when your baby/child is in pain… it is so extremely hard. Be sure to do research on this group. I lived on here back in ’03 – ’04 – there is tons of good info. My younger son had terrible reflux and he had to be on Prilosec until he was 16 months old… Nutramigen that long too. I had to keep both of my boys propped up all the time until they got older and did better. I bought a Tucker Sling for Jordan to sleep in at night. Like I always say, trust those mommy instincts… dont’ let a doctor blow you off and not take your concerns seriously! Hang in there… the good news is that most reflux babies really do get better and you move on out of this painful stage. My boys (both of them) lived on Mylanta! I bought the Mylanta Cherry Supreme because it did not contain aluminum (through my research, I found that is the best one). BUT, from what I’m reading on the forum now… I’m not sure they make it anymore. I have read that you can find a generic at CVS that does not contain aluminum. I kept it in my diaper bag and took it everywhere!

Hi. My name is Geraldine, my daughter Quinn is 3 months old, breastfed & has reflux. I’ve nannied for 20 yrs and have lots of experience with newborns & reflux but honestly you would think this was my first time. We have seen a GI and gone from Zantac to prevacid (1ml x 2 day). She also gets mylicon & gaviscon .3ml alternated, up to 3 x per day each. We also had x-rays done to rule out any kind of physical Issues (Besides slow empty of stomach, she’s fine). Although looking at her doubled in pain when her stomach spasms & hearing her scream, i beg to differ that she’s fine. I can hear everything entering her stomach-it sounds like a coffee perculator. She screams after every burp & very often refuses to finish a feed after her burp. I’ve used the AR pillow, tummy positions, Avent & Dr Brown bottles. She now refuses to nurse & quite frequently refuses the bottle too. I’m at my wits end with the discomfort & crying, I feel so hopeless & the look of pain & pure desperation on her face is awful.
Has anyone seen an improvement with changing to nutramagen or alimentum? Any advice would be great.

DS is four months old and I think he weighs about 15 pounds. He is on 7.5 mG Prevacid in the a.m. and another 7.5 mg PM. Our biggest issue has been feeding aversions. He was doing pretty well on Prevacid but feeding was a real struggle. From the 29th until Monday, he actually finally was eating OK, but recently started to spit up more and have more reflux symptoms again and now we’re back to fighting feedings. He’s mostly still breastfeeding okay when I’m home (but a bit less, has started to be fussier and did refuse one feeding with me yesterday–afraid it will get worse again), but is refusing the bottle. He had an ounce to an ounce and a half in a 12 hour period yesterday but otherwise seems happy. Last night, he ate with me but had a couple huge spit-ups including one choking/gagging one that was more like vomiting. Spit up all his medicine twice last night and I didn’t re-dose after that.
My doctor will not prescribe Zantac in conjunction with Prevacid. She doesn’t want to do Zegerid. She is not comfortable increasing his Prevacid dose as it’s at the top of the usual dosing chart they use (not the Marci-Kids chart). She recommends seeing a GI specialist as a next step. DS isn’t that BAD compared to a lot of stories I hear about kids not sleeping and screaming in pain all the time so I feel like this is overkill. On the other hand, my mom says my idea of “normal” is now skewed and I should have him seen. We’re at a point where he’s generally seeming pretty happy…although he’s getting fussier again…and we can’t have him not eating!!! It is frustrating to feel like we’re so close to having this under control but not have options.
I called the hospital today and the first available GI appt is May 9. I can call my doctor to try to have them get us in sooner and am debating doing that but am not sure how much difference it will make. I feel bad for DS and don’t want to cause long-term issues, but I think this is the peak and by May 9 he’s likely to have improved. WWYD????

Liamzmom-
Thank you for your reply. Did your son start eating again right when you started the Zantac or did it take awhile for him to start? I’m really nervous about how long it is going to take to break her aversion. Can I ask what your feeding schedule is–how much and how often? And is he breastfed or formula? So glad to hear that meds are working for some you out there. The prevacid already has me frustrated, since I have to wait effectively a minimum of 3.5 hours between feedings. Today my daughter was so hungry that she wouldn’t fall asleep but I had to wait to feed her before the 3 hours elapsed so give her the prev andthen another 30 minutes before I could feed her. Poor girl fell asleep in my arms during the feed and then attempted to stay asleep while I tried to get a burp out of her. Urgh…just venting.
I have so much to say- am flying out the door- PELASE read GROUPIE INTRO and follow link to Prevacid 101
YES both meds- seperate doses by 4 hrs
baby seems worse bcse it’s like baby isn’t on any meds until prevacid ‘kicks in’ PLUS sorry mama dose seems very low
PLEASE please
read all you can, research, and then TELL doctors what your baby needs, as you are best advocate!
make sure to find and read through Prevacid 101 (from groupie intro)!
Is baby in pain? Medicated? which ones? what dose & form?
Is baby breastfeeding? Formula? which one?
how about poop? normal? mucousy?
painful gas?
rashes? excema?
Please tell more so that we can help you more
so glad you found us!

That sounds just like my ds! He take Prevacid 15mg in the am and zantac 2ml at night. Lately, he has been having what seems like severe spasms. I don’t know if it is tummy or lower. It seems to be worse after eating. His reflux seemed better (silent)–less arching and pulling when nursing, now he is not eating some feedings. It is awful! He screams, pulls his legs in and moans/grunts.
He had something similar about 2 weeks ago when I tried to start rice cereal–I stopped that right away and he is only taking breast milk again.
Have you noticed anything that makes it worse for you guys?? We have taken Bethenachol too but his stool was very thin to start with and it didn’t really seem to help. We are now trying Levsin. It helped for a few hours, but he still has a lot of pain if he eats well.
The thing is you see, I have been through this before with my dd 3 yrs ago. She did better after treatment for reflux and is weaning off her meds still now at almost 4 yrs old. I always thought there might be something going on lower than the stomach based on her symptoms, but nothing ever dx.
Love to see if anyone has an answer. I hate seeing my child in pain

Going to try to stay breastfeeding till i get to a baseline. His poo today was a more normal color (orange), but was LOADED with mucous. It was really gross. No diarrhea though. Unfortunaley on day 4 of the diet, i am down 3 more lbs. I’m actually enjoying frying squash and potatoes in olive oil, forgot how tastey they can be, and i’m getting creative with how to fix them. Hopefully the weight loss will level off.
Not making enough milk either. Having to supplement quite a bit. When i pump at work, i’m only getting 1 ounce per side. I used to get 3- 4

Hi there!
I’m the “Neocate person”, thanks Laura for the message. I’m sorry I didn’t get the message sooner, my whole house has been down for the count with a stomach bug, luckily the baby hasn’t gotten it *fingers crossed*, otherwise I would have responded sooner.
A few things in your original post that really stuck out to me, first how old is the baby now? And is he strictly on Neocate? Nothing else, meaning you haven’t introduced solids? How long has he been on Neocate, imporovement can take some time for his gut to heal and all the offending proteins to leave his system. The color “blackish” is normal for Neocate babies becuase it is a low residue formula, low residue formulas lower the level of bacteria in the gut leading to reduced breakdown of bile, more bile in the stool causes the darker color.
I would also suggest not going to Neocate Junior as Junior is designed to children 1 to 10. Although soy oil is listed in the ingredients there is NO soy protein (or corn for that matter) in the product, the proteins have been extracted and highly refined making it suitable for babies with allergies. And the proteins are what these babies are reacting to. Neocate and EleCare truly are the only formula options for highly sensitive babies.
As far as breastfeeding goes, I am currently exclusively breastfeeding my MFPI baby. He is almost 8 months old and his symptoms started at 7 wks, which included mucuos and blood in his stool. I did a TED diet and it took a LONG time for him to be symptom free, over 4 wks. If you are able to try BFing again it’s worth a shot, but you’re right it’s not easy on the mom. I’m currently taking extra calcium supplements along with regular vitamins. And I’ve found that he reacts to dairy, soy, tomato, and egg, so I avoid all of those and nuts just to be safe.
As far as the reflux goes, I can’t offer much help unfortunately. My middle son had reflux but it was easily controlled with Zantac. Laura, do you have any suggestions?
I’m sorry you’re having so much trouble, I’d like to be able to help out more if I can. Let me know how you’re doing

Thanks a lot. Not it hasn’t been too long. In fact, we started breastfeeding again tonight because i found some obvious blood in the last diaper. I just don’t understand how “hypoallergenic” can be so hard on his system. I’m doing TED right now… but i’m worried about my own heath, doing this long term. Hard to know how this will go. i’m still getting my supply back, and who knows if this will even improve the bleeding. I was looking for the “easy fix”, but apparently that doesn’t exist.
hugs mama!
any chance to get back to breastfeeding or has it been too long now?
IF it is not a possibility, please do not be hard on yourself!
be gentle!
you’re doing the best you can w/ what you’ve got!
not sure about what to tell you…I sent an email to a neocate person…hopefully she will respond soon

My son has MSPI, and seems to also be intolerant to eggs and nuts… and probably other stuff too. My diet was so restricted, that i lost 65 lbs while breastfeeding.
He had mucous and blood in his stool, but i was always able to make it go away by changing my diet…. until i couldn’t figure it out one day. I started an elimination diet when he was 2 months old… and when he turned 5 monts we saw the GI specialist. They immediately jumped on neocate. I was tired of the diet and ready to see a change, so we tried it for a week.
The first few days were awful. He didn’t want it at all. He vomited a lot and got reflux so bad that he was hoarse. His doc reccomended and increased dose of his pepcid. It worked… no more hoarseness or vomiting, but he just doens’t seem like himself. He’s almost too quiet, too tired. Not as interested in faces. Also i find that the neocate makes his poops impossible to decipher (neocate black and curdy). He only poops once a day now, but its really gooey squishy, and i’m pretty sure there is mucous in there because its so stringy.
When i called the ped they said that we would try neocate junior because it does not have soy oil in it. To be honest i regret this whole deal, and wish i had just figured it out on my own with the breastfeeding.
Anyone have any insight on neocate, and what a stool is supposed to look like, and whether or not his is normal?
