Hi! We have just started Prevacid and I want to keep giving my daughter (4 months next week) the Zantac until the prev starts working fully. Here’s my question: I know the prev needs to be given 30-60 min before a feed, and the zantac and prev need to be 4 hours apart. Her zantac script is for .6 ml 3 times a day, and her prev is 7.5 mg twice a day. Is there a best order to give these? Yesterday I did prev at 7am and then zantac at 11am, but I couldn’t give the prev again when I wanted to (3pm) because she had just eaten an hour before that so she didn’t get the second prev until 4:15, and then we ran out of time to give another zantac dose because it was bedtime – she was miserable by 6:30pm because she isn’t sleeping well day or night. The prevacid is most important, but I feel like last night was a worse night because she only had one dose of zantac. How in the world do I fit in 2 doses of prev and 1.8 ml of zantac in one day? Shoudl I give the zantac in two .8 doses? Should I give some zantac during in the middle of the night when I have to go in and resettle her anyway? Shoudl the prev be given 12 hours apart to do the most good, or can it be the first two doses of the day, then zantac the rest of the day??? It’s so complicated, and she’s so hurting and frustrated during breastfeeding and I’m so tired I could cry!!!! Plus, totally unrelated to these questions, I’m sorry, but I think I just diagnosed her with sandifer’s, which until yesterday I didn’t know existed but I read about it on this website and went “Oh! That’s what she’s been doing all these months!” which while I feel better knowing that there is probably nothing neurologically wrong with her, is still a scary thing to experience in your baby! But really, I’m just asking about the meds, not the sandifer’s.
Tired and overwhelmed,RachelTopic: elecare increasing reflux
Hi, My son Nate is 6 months old and after months of breastfeeding on an extremely limited diet with lots of failed trials of seemingly benign foods (veggies, fruits, and others, all free of top allergens, gluten and corn), we are doing another formula trial with elecare. The only way I can get him completely clear of symptoms (mucous, occult blood, eczema, increased reflux) is by eating white potato, yellow squash, apples and pears. I’ve been doing that for three months and can’t anymore mentally, physically, etc. We tried neocate early on, but I think he was not properly medicated then for his reflux, and the thinness of the neocate increased his refluxing, which worsened his pain. This time, the elecare is increasing his reflux, but he is uncomfortable, ie. unable to sleep, etc.
Our hope is that we can let his gut heal for a couple weeks on the elecare and then go back to breastfeeding on an expanded diet. I’ve been reading lots of posts that dance around this subject, but can’t find a clear answer fast enough. What can I do to help the reflux? We tried thick it and he threw up the bottle. We have not yet started solids. Would they help? He has not tolerated ANY grains through my bm, not even gluten free ones like teff.
Any advice greatly appreciated!!
First of all, I am so happy that I found this place! I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas/help…anything.
For starters, my son was born on Nov. 11 He was 8lb. 8oz. healthy baby boy. He took to breastfeeding wonderfully and has been doing great ever since (except for those first few weeks of course – painful!). He is now 5.5 months old and over 19lbs! So, we are not having an issue with him gaining weight. I am just confused on what might be bothering him.I always noticed that when I would feed him he would squirm and arch his back and fussed quite a bit more than normal….spit up ALOT and had a ton of loose BM. But, once he turned about 3.5 months the fussiness increased and so did the spitting up and so did the BM. His dirty diapers never have a texture to them….always watery and he was having like 6 or 7 a day and most being blowouts. He would squirm more than normal while feeding him. I called the dr. they said it was normal. I had brought up milk intolerance and shke sort of dismissed it. Well, at 4 months it was so bad, I called them and told them how it had increased and she said she wanted to see him…..the diarhea was not normal. So….I went to the dr. and she prescribed Zantac….actually the generic kind and he was to take 2 ml 3 times a day and this was to help with the fussiness and uncomfortableness, spitting up. She also asked that I eliminate dairy for 3 weeks to see if that helped with the diarhea. I did all of this and amazingly the first few days were awesome! I thought he was fixed….lol! The past month or so he has done a ton better than before, but isn’t exactly fixed….he has some fussier days than normal but he has always been a good sleeper and he wasn’t spitting up quite as much. I had elimated all forms of dairy.Well, I called her on Monday to give her an update…..the spitting up was better, the fussiness was better, the squirming was better and the BM had improved but he is still having 1 or 2 wet loose stools a day. There is never a seedy diaper, always yellow water basically. (TMI, sorry) So, she has now asked that I eliminate soy in addition to the dairy for 2 more weeks.I saw the list on this forum of things that I can eat and that is wonderful! Thank you. First, do you think we are doing the right thing to treat him? The medicine in combination with the elimination of dairy and soy? He actually for the past two days has been spitting up much more than normal and I’m not sure why…..but, today is really the first day of being soy free. Also, I have a wedding this weekend and will be out of town the whole weekend. The bride has already asked that my meal be dairy/soy free – God bless her, but what am I going to do the rest of the time? I cannot find any info on what to order when dining out at fast food or regular dining.Any help at all would be soooooo appreciated!! I hate that he has had these diapers for so long and want so badly to help him. Thanks again.-Ann
I hope someone out there can give me some hope. My son is 14 weeks old and struggling. Here is the whole story. Beginning at 2 weeks old I started to notice that he would get fussy about 20 minutes after eating (he was exclusively BF). This progressively worsened over the weeks to inconsolable screaming.
I took him to our ped and she was shocked at his crying asked if he spits up (which he rarely does) and took an x ray (showed lots of air in his gut). She sent us home with Alimentum. We tried the formula for 1 week and I pumped to keep up my supply. He had one good day that week then went down hill. I returned to breastfeeding and stopped eating dairy. Now I only avoided dairy products themselves (milk, yogurt, cheese). I did not read labels etc. Two weeks later the ped prescribed Prevacid because I started looking into reflux and he fit all of the symptoms except spitting up. He would scream for hours after each dose of Prevacid. I think now that it was the citric acid in it. Finally got in to see a ped gastro. and was prescribed Prilosec capsules.
He will begin to show progress then regress. He started on 10 mg then 10 mg 2x/day and now 10mg 3x/day (Marci-kids dosing). I noticed recently when I ate foods that contained milk or soy he had several mucousy green poops. I can not do a TED so we started him on an amino acid formula (Nutramigen AA) last weekend. He seems to be worsening. Also, I realized the Prilosec capsules have lactose. Could all this milk and soy over time be the reason his progress is short lived? Please help with any ideas about what is going on?
Rae0121092009-04-30 14:13:30Topic: Still Having Problems
Hi everyone! A little background: My daughter is now 5 months, 12 pounds, been through Zantac, Losec, Prevacid,Bethanacol, and Reglan. We thought we were getting somewhere with the Prevacid, but then she began to have terrible stomach spasms through the day and night. Once we stopped the Prevacid, her spasms died down.
Starting about a month ago, she would refuse feeds for up to 8 hours, one time even going 14. It was always a hassle to get her to nurse. Finally a week ago, she accepted a bottle of pumped milk. Still, she had terrible gas and would wake up every 30 min. to an hour at night.
I have cut out dairy, soy (except for ‘traces of’), eggs, beef, and nuts. She is still having stinky gas and always strains to poop. She’s constantly drawing up her legs and crying. She doesn’t have diarrhea anymore, but I’m concerned about the gas and pain.
I tried her on Alimentum for the first time yesterday. She would only take a couple of ounces at feedings, and acted so fussy in between. She did sleep much better, but her diapers were never very wet. After she continued acting sluggish and fussy and her reflux became worse, I decided to hold off (don’t know if that’s the right decision).
She guzzled down 4.5 oz of breastmilk at her last feeding.
I’m so frustrated because I don’t know what to do. I would love to continue to nurse her, she does well on breastmilk beyond the gas. I’ve already lost 20 pounds and counting from the limited diet. Should I try cutting out wheat too? I just know that doesn’t leave me much to eat.
My father just sent over (we live in HK) some bentyl. Any experiences with that? Wondering if it will help with the gas?
Sorry for all the venting. I just want my little one to be able to rest. She really is so happy when she’s not in pain.
C-Mommy 2009-04-29 01:41:48 Topic: Upper GI and Endoscopy
We’ve been round and round with meds for Sam.. zantac, prilosec, prevacid with bufferbabies, prevacid solutabs, and now zegerid. We got the zegerid from the ped GI that we FINALLY got to. Sam is doing better than he ever did on the prevacid but is still not eating well. At least there was some improvement! I’m glad I didn’t listen to our pedi when he said one med is as good as another and won’t make a difference to switch, and also glad I didn’t listen when he said Sam has a behavioral issue and that’s why he won’t eat. Another point for trusting the mommy instinct. The Ped GI is great…immediatly said that we need to make sure nothing else is going on since sam has been on meds for so long with no improvement. <yay! That’s what I’VE been saying!> so we took him in for a gastric emptying scan, swallow, and upper GI. That day was a DISASTER. This kid does not care that he didn’t get to eat for x hours and still refused to take the bottle for the gastric scan. So that was a bust. Took them 45 minutes to get 1 ounce in him… not so useful right? Then we met with the speech pathologist before the swallow study. She observed him breastfeeding (for maybe a minute…he actually was having an ok day) and said that it doesn’t sound or look like he has issues with that and since he won’t take a bottle naturally then the test won’t really provide any useful info. So we didn’t do that test. Then the speech pathologist went to check us in for the upper GI and came back saying that there was no appointment scheduled for that, and she couldn’t get ahold of our dr. so to just go on home. We did. What a wasted day. Turned out that the computer had a glitch and sam DID have an appt for the upper GI and we missed it. So now it is rescheduled for thursday. We have a scope scheduled for monday the 4th. Now that we are getting to all these things, which I have wanted to do since he isn’t improving at all (even on marci doses) I am getting anxious for him. For the upper GI i just know that they will have to put the tube in his nose since there is not a snowballs chance in H*** that he will drink BARIUM from a bottle if he won’t even drink milk from a bottle. Has anyone had to have them do that and how was it? As for the scope, did anyone have any problems with their lo after the procedure? Some people say that the throat can be sore for a day or two afterwards… I’ve read most of the old posts on here and just want to be prepared.
On another note, we have been trying to do some solids (sam is 6 mo) and he is definitely interested and ready, but he gets very agitated after eating a little bit, and also sounds very raspy and coughs a lot. Did anyone else have stuff like this getting started but then it got better? Is it just that he isn’t used to swallowing the foods or would you think that something else is bothering him? I always wonder about his throat and swallowing because he drools SOOO much and always has, plus he always has his hands (both if he can fit them) about as far back in his mouth as possible. I know that we will get some answers, one way or the other, soon. I’m just anxious and want to know if anyone else has had experiences like this…
Sorry for the insanely long posting.
Topic: Anyone used Erythromycin??
I know this may sound strange but my 4-mo-old son was just prescribed Erythromycin for his reflux. He was on Zantac — didn’t work. Now he’s been on Prevacid over a month…seems to be helping in terms of reducing the acid. He only gets upset or is in pain from a reflux spitup about 15% of the time. However, our pulmonologist wanted to prescribe a motility drug since he’s still spitting up quite a bit – we’re talking soaking through 2 bibs after each feed, and requiring a shirt change almost every time we change his diaper! He wanted to use Reglan, but he called the GI to make an appt for us, and the GI said they had black boxed (?) Reglan due to the rare but occasional neurological side effects. So he prescribed Erythromycin instead. I know it’s an antibiotic but apparently it also is a motility drug.
I was just wondering if anyone has used it before? Does it work right away or should I wait a while before I expect to see results?Thanks!NicoleColin-12/19/08, preemie 6 weeks earlyBreastfeeding – shellfish/egg/dairy/nut/tree nut-free diet!Topic: MSPI breastfeeding?
My 1st born child now 2 and a half had MSPI and reflux which he grew out of..we had him on formula and I never tried breastfeeding he ended up on neocate. Now my 2nd child 3 weeks old Ive been breastfeeding since day 1 and Ive been noticing the same pattern as with my son. So the peditrician started her on Zantac. She still has thrown up since being on it. And is EXTREMELY gassy (and the odor is horrible) even tho im not eating anything spicy or that should produce extra gas, in fact she seems more gassy then my 1st born ever was. She is pulling away at the breast and crying and only sleeping on average 1 hr a night. Her stools are mucusy and we are lucky if she has 1 a day which when we first brought her home she had 6 a day. I just dont know what to think. I havent eliminated any milk products from my diet because I do actually eat a lot of dairy between drinking 3 glasses of milk a day and eating cheeses, yogurts, etc. I dont want to cut these things out that I love unless it really is the issue and Ive heard it could take 6 weeks for the milk to completely leave your system, is this true? I plan on visiting the pediatrician once again but would like to know if anyone else breastfeeding has noticed these same things?
