Topic: TED/ strange BM/ Rice cereal
I have a 4 month old with terrible reflux. We’ve tried all the meds (currently on Zantac), so now I’m looking at diet. I am currently breastfeeding and using Neocate. The dr told me to eliminate all dairy from my diet. It’s been about 2 weeks, but no change.
Also, normally her BMs are thick and a very dark green/ black color, but yesterday she had a very light green mucous looking diaper. That’s the first time it’s ever looked like that. Any thoughts? Also, I am considering starting a TED diet. But she is taking 12 tsp of rice per 5 oz bottle. Can we continue with the rice if I do TED?I appreciate any thoughts!Hi! I’m new to this site and am trying to find answers for my little girl. I posted this under “introduce yourself” but maybe it fits better here. She has reflux, but her treatments aren’t helping. I don’t know what to do.
I guess I will start from the beginning. She is almost 4 months old. We started noticing that she was throwing up a lot and not gaining weight well when she was just a few weeks old. We have tried Zantac, Prilosec, and Axid. Our pediatrician also recommended Nutramagin formula. After a few weeks of that, I took her to a pediatric GI. He put her back on Zantac (increased the dose and told us to mix it into a bottle this time), told me to continue breastfeeding (but eliminate all dairy), and continue supplementing with Neocate formula. We also do 12 tsp of rice to 5 oz of formula. It has been two weeks and no change. I called this morning to see if we could try something new, but he said he didn’t want to see her for another 3 weeks to make sure all of the changes have had time to take effect. We have also had an upper GI with barium done. It showed reflux, but no obstructions. Even with all that, she is still hurting. I don’t know where to go from here.
My husband and I are at the end of our rope. Babygirl cries all the time. She cries when she eats (takes a few sips then screams then takes a few more sips and arches her back and cries more). This happens especially when I nurse her. After she eats, she and cries for about 30 minutes straight unable to be consoled. A lot of times after she eats she stretches her body out. It almost looks like a toddler’s temper tantrum, then she relaxes and cries. I feel so bad for her. I know she must just hurt all the time. She is fussy overall during the day. She only naps in 30 minute intervals, but sleeps about 6 hours a night. She sleeps on her side. When I wake up to check on her, she always has her head thrown back. I have found throw up by her mouth in the morning. I’m worried she will aspirate in the night and I won’t know. She throws up ALL the time during the day. Not just a little spit up, but puddles on the floor. She is still throwing up 2-3 hours after a feeding. I can hear the gurgling in her throat and her wet burps make her cry or stiffen her body. She is a happy baby when she isn’t crying or throwing up, but 75-85% of the day is complete misery. She wants to be held all of the time, so I spend my day trying to cuddle with her and cleaning up throw up. I feel like this is never going to end. I get frustrated because I feel like nobody understands. I’ve heard “well at least it’s not colic.” and “you just need to buy a good swing.” I’ve only been away from her to grocery shop a few times, and I refuse to leave her with anyone but my husband because I can’t leave her knowing how bad she hurts. Am I crazy? Is this just normal?
If anyone has any new ideas, please share them! I know we are blessed that reflux is our only health concern with our baby, but sometimes it feels like we are going insane. I appreciate any tips or advice anyone can offer. I just want to help her feel better.
Thank you so much!
This site has been so useful for all of my gerdlings. I used it with my son, who is now 5.5 and my daughter, who is 4 today. How times have changes with the medicines!!
My newest child, a son, was born December 7th. Par for the course, he has reflux as well. Silent reflux, just like the rest of my children (DS #1’s reflux substantially improved after PT for his torticollis). We tried Zantac and with it being given 3x/day, it helped for maybe 1-2 weeks. Then it stopped working. I also had Prevacid Solutabs left over from 4 years ago that I used with my daughter and so I gave him one per day, along with the Zantac. I know the solutabs are 3.5 years old but it was the best I could do until I could get in to see the doctor!:) It seemed to help some.Saw the NP and she prescribed Prevacid 1/2 a day and we wil re-evaluate in 2 weeks. Well, I *KNOW* that dose isn’t high enough and I’m sure she does too. So, I fully expect to increase that dose. I’m giving him a full tablet in the cheek twice a day (one unexpired, one expired). My question: we are still symptomatic on it. Spits up some. Moans and groans t/o naps (clearing of the throat). His biggest spit up is at 4-5am, usually 2-3 hours after his only bottle of the day (I breastfeed but give him one bottle at 1-2am to give myself a break: Enfamil Gentlease). His stomach will kind of “hiccup” and then out comes all this formula. Maybe I’m giving him too much?! He always has pretty big burps (several) after feeding, sometimes wet burps, esp when the next dose of Prevacid is needed.:) Should he still be symptomatic being on 30mg of Prevacid (granted, one of the solutabs being given is 3.5 years old)? I do notice a difference being on it but he is still symptomatic as far as the silent reflux still occuring. He still chokes and gags. Maybe this will get better with time? He has only been on the unexpired Solutabs for 2-3 days.I still have Zegerid 40mg packets left from my daughter. Zegerid did NOT work for her – she had terrible gas on it and was brutally constipated. So, I do have those leftover from her. However, my first son was on Zegerid and did really well on it. Should I give those a try along with the Prevacid? Because I am going to run out of Prevacid soon (I’m self-prescribing my son’s Prevacid dose). Can I try OTC Prevacid or Prilosec? If so, how do I do that? My son is 6 weeks old and 9lbs.I should also say that I have a strong let-down with breast-feeding and this exascerbates his spitting up/gas.Thank you so much for the advice. I’m really out of shape with all of this…I used to be so up on it but now that there are so many OTC options, I’d like to see if I can use that to my advantage.Maybe some of you have been through something similar?
My son is 10 months old. He has had “silent reflux” since he was born. He has never been a good eater. At 7 months, after eliminating the top5 allergens from my diet, I stopped breastfeeding and switched to Nutramigen. His symptoms (little to no weight gain, trouble taking bottles, uncomfortable gas, fussiness, frequent upper respiratory/ear infections, etc) continued. He refuses to eat solids, so we were referred to a speech therapist, who sent him to an allergist. His prick tests were negative, but he reacted to almost all of the patch tests. We switched his to Neocate and he finally started to gain a little weight, but he has now started to projectile vomit randomly and wakes up SCREAMING, thrashing, farting every couple hours at night. We have an endoscopy scheduled for the end of the month to rule out EE, but I don’t know what to do to help my little guy until then.
Any advice would be great!
The road to TED:
My EBF 3mo DS started refluxing and screaming during/after
feeding at 3 weeks. Ped suggested cutting out dairy, which I did, though at the
time I wasn’t aware of all the hidden sources, so I wasn’t truly dairy free. At
5 weeks he had diarrhea after I had lots of lemonade, so I cut out citrus. At
two months the reflux had gotten worse, constantly congested, very gassy, and
had a diaper with flecks of blood, and always mucus-y. Ped said my DS is
allergic to my milk and to put him on hypoallergenic formula. I said no thank
you, but did agree to trying Zantac for the reflux. At the same time I started
reading about baby allergies and decided to go top 8 free. That was December 15
(including hidden soy and dairy). No improvement so after two weeks of Zantac
and Top 8, and two more diapers with flecks of blood. I quit giving him Zantac
(He would scream at every dose) and on
December 26 I decided to give TED a shot. Here’s what I’ve been eating:
Turkey- Shelton’s turkey sausage, Jennio ground turkey,
turkey breastRice- steamed brown rice, Erewhon gluten free rice crisp,
vanilla enriched rice milk, brown rice cakes with sea salt, brown rice pasta,
rice flourSquash- yellow and green
Russet potatoes and Sweet potatoes, and twice Wendy’s fries
Olive oil (drizzled on everything), sea salt, pepper, canola
oil (for frying)Allergen free multi-vitamin, iron, calcium, and fenugreek
Not doing pears because he got a rash on his mouth and groin
both times I had them. So, this is day 18 TED (and day 29 top 8 free). I’ve been
logging everything: Spitting up has slightly
decreased slightly. Poop is still mucus-y,
though sometimes more liquid-y. The
color is kind of orangy/ golden, not yellow. We had a few green last month, but
none since. Also, no visible flecks of blood, so that’s good. He is still very gassy, which disturbs his
sleeping, as he wakes up in pain and struggles to relieve himself. (I’ve found
nursing him helps him to pass gas and poop.) I nurse him frequently, every 2
hours or so during the day and 3 hours at night, as he can’t see to handle
fuller feeds. (We’ve tried and he spits up A LOT!) Still very congested,
cleaning his nose twice a day. His naps are still erratic and he’s begun to
have a really hard settling at bedtime, but we never leave him alone to cry.MY QUESTION IS THIS—Do I keep going with my current TED, or
replace something? I was thinking I’d see more improvement by now and I’m
getting discouraged. My next appt with Ped is in three weeks, and I really want
to get a handle on this so he doesn’t keep pushing formula. I am willing to do
whatever it takes to make MY MILK hypoallergenic for my little guy, and very,
very determined to continue EBFing. Should I get a referral for a Peg GI?Your advice greatly appreciated!
Hi, I hope someone could help me out or just give me ideas on what to do next.My DS is 5 months old (born on 25/7/2011
full term + 5 days).I am struggling with his weight gain and
refusing to nurse. He is exclusively breastfed. His weight history
is:at birth: 7 pounds 7 ouncesat 1 month: 11 poundsat 2 months: 13 pounds 14 ouncesat 4 months (this is where we noticed the problem
was affecting his weight): 14 pounds 12 ouncesat 5 months: 15 pounds 9 ouncesHe has reflux which seemed to aggravate at
around 2 months old. He is on Nexium 10mg for a little more than 3 weeks now (granules in 15 ml of water, once a day in the morning). He
cries (screams), arches his back, nurses on and off during all feeds. I often
get him to sleep and nurse him while asleep 🙁 I tried pumping and giving him a
bottle but he still refuses to open his month for more than 1-2 ounces every 3
hours!! He seems hungry and routes for the breast only to nurse for 3 minutes
and that’s it. He spits-up (sometimes 2 hours after feeding), burps a lot, gets
hiccups. He will not nap for more than 45 minutes and often wakes up in a bad
mood. He wakes up every 1.5-2 hours every night all night, and nurses for
anywhere between 6 to 10 minutes. I believe he does this to make up for lost
nursing sessions during the day, but he is still not gaining weight. He nurses
for a total of around 8-9 times per day, usually from one breast only and rarely
empties it. As you can see, he dropped from the 95th percentile to less than
50th now. He is medicated and I am off dairy since before he was born (my
youngest DD has a dairy allergy) and off soy since he was 2 months old. Now I am
on my 6th day of Total Elimination Diet consisting of Turkey and Lamb, rice and
millet, zucchini and pears, sweet and white potatoes (with olive oil, sunflower oil, salt, pepper and
cinnamon).I have seen no improvement, neither from the Nexium
nor the diet. Please help!!! What should I do??Topic: Low to none weight gain
Hi all!
My son is 6mo old, born 4 pounds 12 oz – was an IUGR baby. Started having problems eating at about 1 month. The problem was that he was not eating much. He later started refusing to eat, cry, arch his back and not gain much weight. He is now 10 pounds 9 oz, at 6 mo of age.
We were initially told that IUGR babies are a pain to feed and that he doesn’t have an appetite. However, I see him hungry, and he tries to eat and he just stops after a couple of gulps. He hurries to take those gulps and his tummy makes some sort of noise and he stops eating. We use Avent bottles and are still using slow flow #2 nipples so that he is able to control the flow. I have to burp him very frequently to get a little bit of food into him. He eats better when he is asleep. He is on breast milk (I pump, ugh) and Alimentum, because i do not have enough milk for him.
Our pediatrician put him on Zantac, which initially helped and then stopped working. A week ago we got a prescription for Prevacid – 3mg. The pharmacies here make a compound. I got a print out of what goes in it — only two things, the drug itself and sodim bicorbonate 8.4%. They told me at the pharmacy that it needs to be given twice a day 1.5 ml at a time, and it doesnt matter when, nor do i need to wait 30 min before feeding him.
My son was having big issues taking zantac – it does taste awful, and we kept giving it to him for the first 3 days along with prevacid. He kept spitting it out. Prevacid compound does’nt taste much better, and my son still spits it out. We take several attempts to give him the medication.
Past two days have been particularly bad- i am ready to cry each time i try to feed him. He keeps eating just a little bit and then starts crying. So i fed him about 7 times today already and he just completely refused his meal. His total daily intake averages about 580ml a day. For the past 3 weeks he gained only 20 grams. We are going to see our pediatrician tomorrow.
What are we missing? I have read a lot of posts on this board, but i still have questions below. Please let me know if you had similar issues and what you did to resolve them.
– Do i need to wait 30 min before giving my son food, after administering Prevacid?
– What can i use to give him the medicine so that he doesnt spit it back out? I use a medicine dispenser now, but he puts up a fight every time we give it to him.
– Does anyone have an IUGR baby with similar issues? What are your experiences?
– Its been 1 week on prevacid, and i am not seeing much of an effect, how dramatic are the results by the time he has been on it for 2 weeks from your experiences?
– Zegerid is not prescribed to infants here in Canada, what are my options in terms of meds, if prevacid doestn work?
We had x-rays, sweat test and multiple blood test (thyroid etc) that all came back normal. My ped said if prevacid doesnt help with eating and weight gain she will ask to run another test, but doesnt want to do it now as it involves swallowing a radioactive chemical.
Thanks for all your help!
