ds has been on 30 mg prevacid and 10 mg pepcid and aloe vera given before breastfeeds for a month now and is still battling the breastfeeds with trapped burps, and waking multiple times at night with needing to burp! Surely this can’t still be reflux!
I would think it might be my diet but it’s so limited there’s nothing left-oatmeal or raisin bran for breakfast, salad for lunch, and vegetables for supper with fruits as snacks and there seem to be no correlations. I have only occasional soy but first son tolerates soy although I know that doesn’t mean second one will. His solids are bananas and pears only-no grains and no legumes or orange foods which all seem to cause gas or facial rashes. I did have overactive letdown but it seems to be stabilizing a little more with out trying to pump and bottle feed but then maybe my supply has completely down-Bottle feeding him just seemed to make the trapped burp problem worse!
The main issues are still gulping at the breast or bottle(worse at the bottle but at breast it hurts supply), trapped air, painful spit ups, impossible to burp unless he relaxes and does it himself. also worse of all he seems to be hungry some of those night wakings because my breast milk supply suffers when he pulls on and off the way he does at every feed-he’s still twisting away even on all those meds! Thinking partially the problem is hunger, we started to supplement with isomil which he doesn’t seem to have a problem with (judging from gas and poops) and because of his gulps he is still waking at night needing to burp.
Please somebody help me- I am losing my mind. Can this problem be due to a hernia or some other physical defect? I just can’t seem to get a hold of this and because his weight is fine the docs don’t seem worried…but they don’t have to battle a nursing baby every 3 hours (he’s 8 mos old today).
Hi I’m new to this forum.I need help. I am so worried something else is wrong with my baby but doctors just tell me all babies spit up and to deal with it. I have a 5 month old girl who at 6 weeks I was told she hadn’t gained enough weight and to stop breastfeeding. She was
always fussy and ate constantly. She went on Enfamil A.R. and Zantac twice a day, 1ml. She gained weight but still spits up constantly. We both change clothes several times a day. I usually leave the house late and in tears almost everyday. It’s just overwhelming! Since the A.R. formula I have tried everything, Isomil, Lacto-free, etc. nothing has worked. Since she is no longer fussy and gaining weight well (16lbs) doctors won’t do anything. Now she’s on Alimentum, todays day 2 and I’ve seen no change. She goes through at least 10 bibs a day, 5 outfits. I do laundry constantly. I need help! Anybody got any suggestions. Next week I have an appointment to see a new peds dr. so we’ll see. Thanks for any adviceTopic: Impatient?
Dominic was on (poorly) compounded prilosec for a couple of months. It
helped a little (still waking often at night), and then seemed to stop
working at all. So we did a 24-hr pH probe study, at the request of our
GI, for which we had to stop the prilosec for 5 days. After the test
results, we put him on Zegerid, 30mg per day (20 mg packets). As of
tonight it will be a full week he’s been back on meds, but so far no
change in his night waking. He still wakes up hourly, or more. I’m trying
to see if he wakes up crying, or just wakes out of habit and then cries
when he doesn’t immediately get breastfed, but in my fog I can’t quite
tell. It may be some of both. I am desperate to reduce the night
feedings, but don’t want to until I’m sure he’s not nursing to soothe his
poor throat.
Any ideas how to tell if the meds are working? He’s not a spitter, and has
no trouble with reflux during the day, really. I am sooo over the
interminable nights. I just watch the clock until 4 when dh takes him out
of the room.
Should I give it the full two weeks to ‘kick in’, or should it be working any
faster due to the fact that he was medicated previously? I’m wondering if
I should up his dose now, or just be patient (he’s on the MARCI-kids
recommended dose for his weight 18lbs and age 8months).
Also, doc wants to try a motility drug–I flat out refused the Reglan, but
agreed to think about the erythro. Should I try upping the dose before we
try the motility drug?
Any input would be appreciated (even if it’s just telling me to be patient).
So many factors in my trials to figure this out, holidays, teething, food problems and allergies that I can’t quite isolate the best adminstration of this medicine. It’s clear to me that when it’s skipped, he is much worse so I know he needs it but not sure which way is most effective…
For those of you who have tried it multiple ways:
capsules (delayed release) in caracream given with meals
capsules sprinkled over food 30 mins before meals
solutabs given in syringe with meals
or am I trying these in the wrong way?
We’re also giving aloe vera before each breastfeeding or expressed bottle (helps a lot with burps) and also giving pepcid at night in a couple of spoons of food (ensures we all sleep through the night). Spacing out the prevacid from this pepcid usually puts us giving it at breakfast (when he is most hungry) and around his after nap snack time close to 3 or 4 pm (again another hungry hard to wait time).
Thanks a bunch. Our script is about to run out and I am not sure whether to go solutabs, granules/capsules and whether to try to get caracream from Dr. Phillips since we can’t get it locally.
as always I am grateful for any and all advice! Happy Thanksgiving everybody.
amanda 😉
We are hoping to get prevacid solutabs from the dr next week but the problem is my daughter is now not feeding well due to the pain.
She is refusing solids most of the time and sleep breastfeeding.
So i can easily give her the tabs on an empty stomach and wait 30mins but then i am not sure if she will eat or not. She may only eat 2oz or none??!!
Will it still work if she only feeds a bit or should i start off giving the tabs at times when i know she will eat more, like when she is sleepy or asleep??
What did everyone else do? Also how long does it take to kick in if we are swapping from prilosec to prevacid?
Thanks

kkmum 2006-11-19 6:59:13 My 8.5 week old son Emory (12 lb) was diagnosed with reflux 3 weeks ago. He has been on Prevacid 7.5 mg twice per day. I recently sent MARCI info to his pedi and asked for a dosage increase to 30 mg total per day, but haven’t heard back from the pedi yet. Since he started Prevacid, the first two weeks were still terrible, then 4 fabulous days, 3 bad days, 1 good day, 1 bad day. On this Monday morning, he will have a barium upper GI. The pedi says the next step is motility drugs, but I am reluctant to start them without trying increased Prevacid.
The worst part about reflux is the pain screaming during and after meals and for hours in the evenings. However, he also groans, kicks, lifts his legs and arches back ALL NIGHT LONG, every 5-7 minutes or so. It is so loud that I am sure he is awake, but I look at him (his crib is next to our bed), and his eyes are usually still closed and he goes back to sleep. I’ve been wearing ear plugs so I can block out some of the groaning, but it is so loud. I can’t imagine that this is quality sleep for him. It’s worse after his 2-3 AM feeding (he is breastfed).
Is this sleep behavior a symptom of reflux or something else? Does anyone else have similar experiences? Advice?
FYI – He sleeps strapped to an AR Pillow (30 degree incline) for the last few weeks. Before he slept in a slightly inclined co-sleeper and had the same sleep noises/movements.

My daughter went to three different ped GI’s…and even the one I have now I am not in love with, but he was willing to let me do the things I wanted to do to help my daughter. Have you looked the the marci-kids.com website to see about his dosage? I know there are a lot of babies here who are on 30mg and even more of prevacid. Also, have you tried to petition your insurance company? That is what I had to do to get an exeption to have my daughter on Nexium and then Zegrid (yes, we have tried them all
). As for the milk thing…the only symptom my daughter had was difficulty sleeping….she would wake several times during the night whenever I ate dairy (I am breastfeeding) and would have a hard time sleeping during the day. I don’t know if it was ever classified as a specific intolerance (no bloody stools or mucous) but I avoided dairy non the less, so it is at least worth a trial to see if that helps him.
). I know that is only 2 weeks away for you, but babies can do a lot of development in 2 weeks. 🙂 The ice thing was key for us! Or maybe try formula…
