InactiveI don’t know much about this really, but I wonder, could it be possible that he is refluxing but there is not enough damage yet to cause pain just irritability? Kind of like when you are on Zantac and it is a little OK but not totally OK?
I am sure you have thought of this, but if you are breastfeeding have you done anything different? I have also heard some babies self wean? Not sure if that is true or not, definately not an expert on breastfeeding!
I get what you mean though, sometimes they are just grumpy because they are- they might have a cold, teeth moving around, be p%^&ssed of at the world (OK maybe not!). I guess you will know soon enough.
Hope you can decipher the code- maybe get Tom Hanks around (OK that wasn’t funny!)

I don’t think there needs to be spit up per se…I see no reason why breastmilk/formula just couldn’t sit in the stomach and make baby feel full/uncomfortable for a long time after feeding…
there is a stomach emptying scan (this is not just an Upper GI- it’s a specific test looking for DGE) that is done to diagnose DGE
there’s a lot of bad hype about reglan, but it has worked wonders for some babies; babies with diagnosed/VERIFIED DGE, in small doses. and, there ARE other motility drugs out there such as bethanecol (sp?) and erythromyacin (sp?)…I feel that if a baby has been given the stomach emptying scan and doesn’t respond well to other drugs, then by all means trying reglan is worth it…

Inactivechristy-
she is clearly not ready-
my advice would be, do NOT force her. things like that can lead to feeding aversions. i know several moms that are dedicated to breastfeeding and simply do not want to introduce solids until one year of age.November 12, 2006 at 9:10 pm #17866In reply to: A question re bottle feeding

InactiveI never sterilized baby bottles, or nipples either, except for new ones. I did use bottled water, but my babies got mostly breast milk so I wasn’t too concerned about it until they were off of breast milk. Then I talked to the doc and she said to give them vitamins with fluoride, since there is no fluoride in Distilled Water…the kind we use. I personally wouldn’t trust tap water anywhere, but that’s just me.

As for boiling tap water I recently saw something on the news about that but I can’t for the life of me remember what show it was or exactly what the reason was, but they said you should not boil the water for more than 2 minutes……maybe because you boil away all the minerals if you boil it too long? Did anyone else see that?

Keymasterbabies tend to plateau on zantac and, it’s very weight sensitive.
how much does baby weigh? I can help you calculate dose.
in the meantime, it’s probably time for a PPI…
as for stopping breastfeeding that’s a very personal decision…
here’s others experiences trying to decide whether to switch to formula: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=5059&a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;TPN=1
maybe if the reflux was under control better then your baby would eat more?
as for supply issues, I’m guessing you’re seeing a IBLC http://www.iblce.org/US%20registry.htm (Int’l board certified lactation consultant) ?

InactiveAs for the Zantac, it’s very possible that he has outgrown his dose already. (My daughter outgrew her first dose in less than two weeks). H2 Blockers are very weight sensitive and babies typically need dosage increases as they gain weight. Often times they eventually plateau on it and no longer get relief…..and then have to move onto a PPI. http://www.marci-kids.com is a great resource of information about reflux and PPI meds for reflux in infants.
As for breastfeeding and weaning….KUDOS to you for making it to 7 months!!!!
Many babies get no breast milk at all….so don’t feel bad if you are ready to wean. Breast milk is usually best for refluxers and I, too would be concerned about switching to formula, but many refluxers do fine on formula as well as long as they are properly medicated, and they are not MSPI. Have you been eating dairly while nursing? If yes, that may indicate that he will be able to handle a milk formula (but it’s not a sure thing). SO, I’d make sure you get his meds right before you make a big change like adding formula. He may need a PPI and that can take two weeks to see resuts.
When I introduced milk formula to my son (he had been on mostly breast milk and a little soy) I started with Good Start (it has the broken down, easier to digest proteins) and only give him 2 ounces per day for two weeks. I did that for two weeks, because it can actually take two weeks for milk proteins to build up in the baby’s system enough to cause problems. Since he was fine after two weeks, I then gradually increase the amt of Good Start until he was on it soley.
I’m curious why he started Zantac at 6+ months? What was he on before?

Inactive1) h2 blockers are very weight sensitive and many babies require PPIs to get complete relief. you can read about them at marci-kids.com
2)if you go to formula, a good choice would be a hypoallergenic formula because many babies with reflux have sensitve digestive systems.Ask Dr. Sears: Coping With Baby’s Acid Reflux
–“Feed tummy-friendly milk. If you are
breastfeeding, continue exclusive breastfeeding for as long as
possible. Breast milk has many advantages over formula, especially for
a baby with GER. It’s digested faster than formula, which minimizes
reflux, and it contains enzymes that aid digestion. Also, while babies
are not allergic to mother’s milk, they can be to many types of
formula, especially babies with GER. If formula-feeding, use a
hypoallergenic formula as recommended by your baby’s doctor. Besides
being tolerated better by sensitive intestines, some of these formulas
are digested more quickly so they remain in the stomach for a shorter
time. “http://www.parenting.com/parenting/baby/article/0,19840,1052 599,00.html?topic=12000&stage=01

InactiveYup Natalia… It was at the height of her first “feeding strike” too. She wouldn’t breastfeed at all without a fight, and she wouldn’t even drink pumped milk in a bottle, but she sucked that barium back like it was liquid gold! (sad, but true, I know.) BTW, I love Trace’s new pic!

InactiveOops.
I get the when are you going to wean from breastfeeding question all the time. I actually took Justice off his meds cold turkey. Today is the third day and still no signs.
I have a feeling Dr. Phillips meant to say 2 to 3 days. He is just so busy. I get some really weird answers from him sometimes. I read them and think did you actually read my e-mail. I know how busy he must be so now I make my questions really short. I REALLY miss Joel. He was great. Joel always took plenty of time to read my e-mails. He was also great about checking these boards. That is actually where I met him. Well, thank you all. Hopefully the sleep issues will get better and I will have more time to be on here to help if possible. It is my mission to help other moms going through the same thing.November 10, 2006 at 11:39 pm #17702In reply to: What Now?!?!?!?!

Inactivemylanta acts as a stool softener. unlike suppositories, you cant become dependent on it to go.
his body may just need to adjust? also my gi said that reflux babies are known to have constipation issues.
i dont know how this would work since youre breastfeeding but when my son used to have these issues i gave him a teaspoon of dark karo syrup in a 4 oz bottle to help him go.nataliachick72006-11-10 16:19:50

InactiveWould you still be able to breastfeed? I am in no way trying to make you feel guilty! Please hear me when I say that! I was told to stop bf my first son and give him formula. To be honest there was no change. He would always go through a honeymoon period with every formula we tryed. That would last a week and then things would go back to normal with crying and all. Breast milk is the best for reflux babies because of the enzymes in it. Again, please no one get angry at me. I just get really aggrivated at all the peds and gi’s that tell moms to stop breastfeeding and do formula. Usually by time it’s too late moms will realize that their baby is not any better on formula. If you can’t go back please don’t feel guilty. I’m sure when your child grows up he’s not going to care how he got feed just that he got feed. I only bf my first for maybe 2 months. This time however I was determined to bf. That of course, is only because I knew better this time around. Sorry, I can’t be of any help as to what formula to choose. I know a lot of moms on here do necotate (sp) and seem to have success with that. By the way, I also agree that it sounds like a milk soy into. Alot of reflux babies have it.

InactiveHello,
I am new here, and am so so happy to find out I am not alone !!! I have a 5 year old with NO GERD ever, However my 8 mo. has spit up (vomiting) ever since he was about 6 weeks. At first I thought it was something I ate (i breast fed for almost 7 mo.) So, I quit breastfeeding and started Enfamil, he still spit. Switched to Similac – nothing, switched to Enfamil A.R. Lipil – nothing. I am currently giving Isomil although it doesn’t seem to help or hinder. I complained to my Dr. when he was about 2 mo. she said he would grow out of it & he was gaining weight ok. At 7 mo. I switched drs. and was immediately sent for Barium (Upper GI) swallow. Definitely Reflux. Started 0.9 ml of Zantac on Oct 17th, excellent results for about a week and then everything went down hill again. I know this is common with H-2 blockers. So, now I don’t know where to go next. Doctor wants to get endoscopy and start Reglan. I hate the thought of either… But especially the Reglan!!!! I would like to try a PPI (prevacid). By the way.. My son shows no other signs of Reflux, no arching, never spits up when laying down, usually spits or vomits (sometimes projectile) when moving around a lot or in bouncy seat and sleeps all night (11 hrs.).
If anyone can give advice I would Love to hear it…..Thanks SOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!
