I have a 2 week old daughter who has been showing signs and symptoms of reflux. I have had issues with her from the second she was delivered. Some of her symptoms include, constant crying, she would wake up from a dead sleep and just cry. I was breast feeding at the time, and she would also cry in the process of nursing. I contributed this to being frustrated with working so hard for no reward(food). I then began supplementing with Similac Advance Care. Some other symptoms she had and still has that started right after delivery is coughing and choking. I was told this was normal as my labor and delivery took less than 30 minutes, and she was not able to clear her lungs effectively while in the birth canal. I of course *bought it*. We brought Kora home after just 24 hrs in the hospital(Christmas Eve).
The night we brought her home she had 2 of these choking episodes, where she would spit up slimy stuff so hard she couldnt catch her breath. This still continues. She then developed green crusty eye discharge, my doc claims it to be a clogged tear duct but prescribed the same eye ointment they use after delivery, which has helped. But when the meds are stopped after a week of 2x a day treatment, the discharge returns.
I decided to quit breast feeding and try her on Enfamil Prosobee(soy) to see if it was a CMA. The constant crying/fussiness continued, the spit up continued, and the choking continued. I had discussed these symptoms with my doctor and he told me to try a thickened formula instead, so we went with Enfamil AR. The spit up decreased, no more choking episodes, but she got constipated and the bowel movements she did have was very runny, and she was still fussy and seemed to cry for no reason. I then decided to try Enfamil Nutramigen, and her bowel movements returned to normal, and she had less gas, but the spit up was worse, and the choking was as well, she would projectile throw up so bad it came out of her mouth and nose, and she would stop breathing. I then switched her right back to Enfamil AR, Now…she has the runs, less spit up, no choking, but still cries and is still fussy all the time.
We use a pacifier and she is hellbent that it stays in her mouth, and will scream bloody murder if it falls out, and its very tiring to be getting up every 5 minutes to put it back in her mouth. She will also start crying with the pacifier in her mouth. The crying episodes have been random, it started to only be in the late evenings and at night, but now it is during the day, and she seems calm by night fall. She has from birth slept through the night, 6-8 hrs without waking for a feeding, her weight has not been disrupted by the spitting up or sleeping through night time feedings, so we have just let her sleep.
We have tried everything to comfort her. We have her in a bassinet with a wedge, so she is elevated at all times. She is not burped, swaddled or moved very much for the first 30-60 minutes after a feeding, to reduce spit up. But she continues to be very uncomfortable. We have her on Enfamil AR but use the nutramigen every 3rd feeding to see if it helps with constipation. Enfamil AR is a milk based formula, so I am curious if she may have a CMA and reflux?
We also noticed she gets diaper rash faster and its worse with the AR, than it was with the nutramigen. She has an upper GI this Thursday but I am wondering if I should ask her doctor to make us an appointment with a ped allergist as well? I plan on using Marci Kids guidelines for dosage no matter what medication he prescribes for the reflux.
Now, I was also wondering if I should attempt the Nutramigen formula again, but thickened with either cereal(dont want to do) or some other thickening agent, to see if it helps with the possible CMA symptoms and the reflux, to rule out CMA. I don’t feel her reflux is CMA related, as she still had reflux symptoms on the Nutramigen. She also has some symptoms of Sandifers with the arching of her back, but the head wobbling at her age is also normal…so thats a toughie to figure out if it’s sandifer related or just newborn related.
I am also wondering if it could be MSPI? As she had the same issues and symptoms on the soy formula? I would like to keep her on something thick to keep her from having her choking episodes, it scares the hell out of me to watch my baby choke on her own spit up and quit breathing, I barely sleep even though she sleeps all night, because I’m scared she will choke while I am sleeping and I cant get to her and the unthinkable happens, so a thickened formula is a must..or something to lessen the spit up and choking. BUT no one makes a hypoallergenic formula thats thickened for babies with MSPI and reflux, and I know the PPI’s only help with the pain. So its damned if I do and damned if I don’t.
I just want my baby to feel better, stop crying so much lol and just be happy. It breaks my heart to just let her cry, but nothing I do consoles her. I am also in the process of finding Mylanta or a generic version without the aluminum. I’m at a loss at what to do for her. How would I thicken the Nutramigen without rice cereal? I use Dr. Browns bottles, oh, and she eats between 2-3oz per feeding. She LOVES the taste of the AR and will eat the whole 3oz but doesnt seem to care for the nutramigen so she usually only eats 2oz of it.
So, thats about everything. If anyone needs any more info to offer better advice, feel free to ask.
Her birth weight was 7lbs 14oz and she was 8lbs 1.2oz by last Thursday(exactly 2 weeks).
Hi everyone! I am new to this forum and thankful to have found some support in this area. I have a 4 month old son who I am exclusively breastfeeding and have since birth. My ultimate goal is to continue nursing until he is one.
Long story short (but not really…sorry for the length!!), I noticed blood in his stool when he was around a month old (not really any fussing, gaining TONS of weight, and still is…. 7 lbs. 9 oz. at birth, 17 lbs. now). Was told to cut all dairy, and did (even hidden). Blood streaked stools (tiny steaks that I have to look for) continued off and on for a while. Then I decided that maybe b/c of his large weight gains and my oversupply, that maybe it was lactose overload instead, so I began block feeding (started with 3 then moved to 4, then to 6, which seemed to do the trick), and I began just avoiding obvious dairy. Well a couple of weeks ago, the blood came back, he seemed super super fussy, not sleeping as well, etc. He has also had a pretty constant diaper rash that I’m only able to control with Desitin at EVERY diaper change (around anus…allergy ring?) He also is pooping several (anywhere from 3-6) times a day and it appears to be mucusy and occasionally green. He also seems to be chronically congested, which is also a sign of MSPI, right??SO.. Finally I decided that maybe it wasn’t lactose overload and MSPI instead. Today marks one week since I have gone on a complete dairy/soy free diet. I know all of the hidden dairy/soy ingredients and I am meticulous about reading labels/etc.He is still having green mucusy poops several times a day, but it has been probably a day or 2 since I saw any blood streaks. Diaper rash is still there and being controlled with desitin. He seems considerably less fussy and also less congested. My questions are:1- Do you think this sounds like MSPI and I’m on the right track with this diet? Or am I crazy and it’s something completely different?2- How long before his poop gets “normal”? Like not so frequent, not mucusy, not green?3- Since I had sort of (?) been avoiding dairy already, shouldn’t it get out of his system faster? I’m just worried that I’m not right in my “diagnosis” since it’s been a week and the rash/frequent pooping haven’t gotten better yet.I’ve talked to the ped. about all of this and they are a little bit clueless about all of it. No one has pushed me to give up nursing yet (probably b/c of his large weight gains), but no one suggested (or even mentioned) MSPI.I’m terribly sorry that this is so long, but I am desperate for some encouragement! I am perfectly content to stick with this diet for several more months if needed. I just want to feel like it’s making a difference!Topic: Help solve Medical Mystery?
Hoping someone recognizes these symptoms and can give some clues to help me understand what to do. Desperately seeking everyone’s knowledge and experience to weigh in! I hope you can spare 10 minutes to read and respond.
My guy is 8 months now and I’ve been on this forum since he was less than 2 months old. I don’t feel we’ve gotten much closer to understanding or solving his problem.HistoryScreaming/Arching back while eating (breastmilk) begins around 3 weeks. Eats less than 1 oz/meal. Small amount of spit up after meals. Severe Colic (cries 12 – 16 hrs a day) and hates car seat. At times weight loss occurs. (6 pounds at birth and born 3 weeks early).8 weeks diagnosed (based only on symptoms) with GERD. Begins Zantac. Begin formula (Good Start) is consitpated and dark gray stools. Develops mild ezcema and cradle cap. Switch to Soy, he is diagnosed with MSPI after finding blood in stool and stool blood test done.12 weeks. Zantac does nothing to ease GERD symptoms. See GI Specialist and start Prevacid Solutabs and switch to Alimentum formula.Cradle cap and ezcema clear but GERD symptoms worsen (more screaming, more “wet burps”, eats less, looses weight).16 weeks slight improvement in GERD symptoms. Seems uncomfortable when eating, but doesn’t scream and arch as much. Instead flaps arms, looks a little like Sanidfer’s Syndrome. Eating increases and can eat 2 to 3 oz at a time. Switch to max dose Prevacid (Per Marci Kids) to alleviate eating discomfort. This does NOT help. Switch back to 1 Solutab per day. Colic improves, cries about 3 hours a day. Begins daycare. Develops a “cold”. Runny nose and lot’s of sneezing 3 days after daycare. 3 weeks later congestion still present and develops a cough (sounds like a seal bark). Daily humidifier, and vicks baby rub used on chest and feet. Switch formula to Similar Sinsitive and conduct another stool test for allery. Comes back negative for blood in stool (dr. said babies can outgrow their MSPI allergy and he seems to not like the taste of Alimentum which is why we switched). Baby weighs 12 pounds now.24 weeks GERD symptoms same. Cold symptoms same. Chest xray shows tiny spot of pneumonia. Treated for 10 days with Ammoxicillin. Nasal congestion improve along with improvement in cough (but still coughs daily) during treatment. Colic improves, almost no crying just fussy baby. Baby develops heart murmur. See a Cardiologist who determins that it’s due to chest congestion. States lungs are enlarged and organs are being pushed lower in body as a result of enlarged lungs. Start on cereals and fruits. Seems to LOVE eating from spoon compared to bottle feeding. Baby weighs 14 pounds now.28 weeks GERD symptoms same. Cold symptoms return as prior to Ammoxicillin. Diagnosed with Bronchilitis and given Albuterol Inhaler. Inhaler does NOTHING to help with symptoms. Baby is ‘hoarse’ when he babbles.30 weeks. GERD symptoms same. Go to ER as congestion/cough are daily and has not had one day without ‘barking cough’. Tests for RSV come back negative. Some days coughs twice hour, some days coughs 7 to 10 times a minute and seems to have a hard time catching breath. Eating is ‘up and down’ with some weeks eats 6 to 7 oz per/feeding and seems mildly uncomfortable and sometimes eating 2 to 3 oz per feeding and seems very uncomfortable.32 weeks. See GI Specialist and Pulmonoligist in same session as they try to figure out why congestion/cough persist. Both drs come to same diagnosis that EVERYTHING we’re experiencing and all sympts are a result of GERD agitating his esophogas and vocals. Dr orders Barium Swallow to rule out internal defect (still waiting on this test). Drs feel GERD is caused from the milk based formula and recommend Goats milk or Alimentum. Encourage me to give him protein in his diet as he is still on cereals and fruits. Also prescribe a Zantac/Prevacid combo. Zantac at night, Prevacid in morning. Next day switch to Goats milk, begin Zantac and vitamin drops. 3 days later baby has lots of blood in stool, cries constantly, and is constipated. Baby weighs 16 pounds now.33 Weeks switch to Alimentum and begin introducing protein as recommended (turkey made at home). 3 days later baby’s cough worsens and is now developing eczema again. My thoughts/questions in general
- Why did eczema clear before on Alimentum and now it appears to possibly be causing it or can Turkey cause eczema? Seems odd.
- Can GERD really cause constant cough that sounds like a seal bark?
- If GERD is the cause, what’s causing the nasal congestion daily?
- Why are GERD symptoms unmanageable even on max dose Prevacid and on Prevacid/Zantac combo?
Thank you for caring!Topic: Update.
What a long road it has been so far. My little guy (who will be one tomorrow) is still suffering from reflux but thanks to this site and good care things are now manageable. He is happy most of the time and always has a smile for you. We have gotten into a routine and are really able to console him when he is having an episode (well at least I am. He is, after all, a mommy’s boy).
He still has periods of choking randomly, and has just begun sticking his fingers into the back of his throat to gag himself.(which his gi confirmed today is normal for a refluxer and not teething as so many people who think I overreact have been trying to say). He also still wakes at night. On a good night he goes to bed at 8 and wakes at 12, 4, and up at 7 or 8. On a bad night (which we have much less of now) he is up every hour or so. His naps are not ALWAYS perfect but are getting so much better. MOST days now he takes 1 good nap that may last anywhere from 1 hour to 2 hours, and a catnap later in the day which is normally about 30 min. Also, he thankfully has always eaten pretty well just a small quantity and often. He is now starting to eat more in quantity and less often, which really helps out when we have a lot to do on any given day.
It took me a good few months to get my sons gi to take me and my concerns seriously but finally after not backing down he is really listening. We now have a good relationship and I feel as though things are getting done. We go for a visit every 4 to 8 weeks to report any changes and are free to email whenever. He also likes for me to send videos of my son if there is anything that ever really concerns me. It is such a blessing to finally be heard!
Needless to say we have come a long way so far and may still have a long way to go, but finally I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, which at my weakest point I lost all had lost all hope for ever realizing. I am so thankful that I have had the oppertunity to stay home with my son and get him through is roughest moments, even more thankful that as of tomorrow I will have reached my goal of breastfeeding for at least a year (still going strong), and there are not words for how thankful I am for this site and for all of you who have written back to my posts. You all have gotten us through some of our hardest times. It is wonderful to know that as hard as this is we are not alone and there are people out there that understand our struggles and will be there to lift us up when we have hit rock bottom so Thank you Thank you Thank You!Hi,
My baby boy is 7 weeks old and was diagnosed with acid reflux about a month ago. We tried Zantac for a couple weeks but it didn’t seem to work and my son hated it! He spit it out most of the time.
We just started Prevacid 4 days ago. I don’t really see a change yet, but I have heard that it can take some time.
In the meantime- my son wakes up every hour or so during the night and he seems like he wants to eat (he moves his mouth like he is doing the rooting reflex). I’ve tried just giving him a pacifier, but he spits it right out. He seems happy when I start to feed him (bottles of breastmilk). He will usually only take about 1 oz and then fall asleep. (During the day he will take anywhere from 2-5 oz) Then he will wake up again soon after looking for more food.
We have tried several things to help stop the spit up/pain- sleeping in car seat, propped up in crib, and we even tried just keeping him flat on his back.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?? I can’t imagine continuing this night feeding schedule much longer! I’m starting to lose it!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
