Topic: Reflux symptoms
Hi, I’m mother to baby boy Zain who is 3.5months old, born on 21st May 2010.
He started off as a very keen feeder and has been breastfed since birth, but from 6-7 weeks onwards he has progressively become very difficult to feed. The only way to feed him now is when he is asleep in a darkened room with no noise. He is also completely averse to any feeding from bottle. Although no test for reflux has been conducted, our paeditrician believes he has silent reflux and prescribed Zain Domperidone and Raniditine two weeks ago. We found that Zain wasn’t getting any better so a week ago he switched the prescription of Ranitidine to Omeprazole. We’re still not finding any improvment and I’m beginning to wonder whether he does actually have reflux at all. As well as the feeding problems, Zain spits up a lot and more recently he has begun to have an episode in the evening during which he cries hysterically. I don’t know if this is linked but he has also begun to want to be held all the time, gets tired very quickly, cries a lot and refuses to play on his own anymore. However, he doesn’t seem to have any issues lying horizontal, even when he is upset and I’ve heard that resistance to lying flat is a key symptom of reflux. Has anyone had similar symptoms? Should I be pushing for a test for reflux? Any help would be much appreciated! x
So glad to have found this forum – it’s amazing what a difference it makes to know that you are not going through something alone.
I have a 7 week old baby girl who was diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks of age by ultrasound to rule out pyloric stenosis (ruled out, luckily!)
At first we thought she was a happy spitter but that changed when she started having issues nursing – basically turned into a wrestling match. I also have overactive letdown which just complicates matters. Then we noticed that she became way more fussy and almost stopped napping all together. When we put her down she would spit up tons, and then wheeze and grunt herself to exhaustion. We felt so bad for her.
At 4 weeks she was put on Zantac which seemed to improve things for a while but, like so many others, stopped being effective after a few weeks. About 5 days ago she started on Prilosec. The pedi prescribed the capsules (10mg) and told us to open them and dissolve in breastmilk to administer once a day and also keep giving the Zantac 2x per day. After reading endlessly on this forum I realize that there is so much wrong with these instructions.
– 10 mg/day seems like a really dose (from what I see on marcikids) for a 2 month old 11 lb baby. Should be like twice this!
– The dose should be split up into two doses
– Zantac can’t be given at the same time but they should be spaced by at least four hours
– PPIs shouldn’t be given with breastmilk but with water and those little balls do not dissolve in either! Should wait at least half an hour before feeding after dose.
I’m now trying to adjust for all these things. Am I on track so far? My main question is, with such a spitty baby, how long should I really wait between giving her meds and feeding her? I mean, how long will it take the meds to get to her belly and work their magic? I worry that when she spits (directly after a meal) that all the meds are just coming right back up and we’re getting nowhere fast. How do you handle such a situation with a breastfed baby who eats every 2-3 hours and sometimes more frequently.
Another question is, though I know these drugs are not meant to change the amount of spit up….has anyone seen a change there with PPIs? I feel like I’m already seeing a difference in the amount she spits though she still spits plenty. Is it just a coincidence?
One other thing I’ve found that helps with her discomfort is Mylanta, which I give after feeding her. Don’t know if this is correct though…should I be giving it before or between feeds?
Anyway, I’m sure I’ll have more questions as I go…just hoping to give this LO some relief. Any help, advice, or input is appreciated, even if it’s just sharing your own stories and experiences. Thanks so much!
Hi,
I am new to this forum and hoping that someone may have some experience or advice to help…My daughter is 18 months old, and was diagnosed with GERD, milk protein allergy (even breast milk), Diabetes insipidus at nine weeks. there was a query crohns (runs in the family) but GI ped consultant felt it was too early to know for sure. She was induced early weighing 5llbs. She vomited so much, upto 45 times a day as a new born that she did not gain weight. We eventually managed to get her diagnosed by a GI ped consultant. She went onto Neocate (still taking) various meds now Zantac, citirizine and chlorthiazide. We spent 9 months in and out of hospital, many horrible tests. She was so brave. We did weaning at 17 weeks, but no wheat, fish, egg, milk, soya, no dairy of any description (goat etc). then gradually introduced wheat (she seemed ok, but got very bloated, GI said to continue), soya (ok), fish (ok), egg (bad reaction, kicked the reflux off again – vomiting, mucous poo, very irritable, diaherra, no sleep ect), Milk we have done tenatatively – she appears to react still so have continued to exclude.3 months ago she was so improved, it was almost as if she was a different child. She started to sleep better, be happier, her poo’s settled (it was bad constipation alternating with diaherra, she took laxatives…) so still no regularity to her bowels but at least she seemed less uncomfortable. In the last couple of months these random episodes have occured and I just do not know what to make of it… she began randomly pooping in the night, which she had not done since night feeding stopped at 9 months. She has also started vomiting in her sleep. She doesn’t wake at all, or make a sound, she is just surrounded by vomit in the morning, having appeared to have crawled to another part of her cot in the night. She has always been worse with teething, but nothing like this, although seems to be cutting her 3rd molar at the moment (she has almost all her teeth – 5 left to get )but this seems worse.Last night, it happened again. She threw up little mouth fulls before bed, but seemed fine (she did not want her neocate, but often isn’t interested these days), went to sleep giggling, even though she had been fractious on and off that evening. this morning, she was literally surrounded by piles of vomit. But apart from seeming tired / a little irriatable she seems fine (i.e not ill with a virus ). She did have lots of very stinky poos over the weekend, but I am not sure if this was the teething…I honestly don’t know what to think – is it a bug?, is it the reflux?, is it crohns starting to manifest?Any one with any advice I would be so grateful, I really hoped it was over for her, but now I am not so sure…Topic: Ugh…poor baby
DS is on prevacid with buffer babies, I am off of dairy (except for a slip up twice (had some ranch on my burger and cheese on my favorite sandwich) SO now I am royally paying for it.
I just dont understand. He used to only pull off the breast once a day now the past 2 days he is doing it at every feeding while screaming and arching! Could he be that sensitive to dairy or is it something else. I asked my pedi to give me some more zantac (i am out of town and left it at home) and she said no since we just bumped up his prevacid dose.I want to try the ted diet but now while I am out of town! I am just out of my mind! He was up every 30 minutes last night screaming! He can only be settled if he is being bounced! My arms are breaking!I just dont know what else to do…maybe it is something else in my diet…Just venting!Topic: Allergy to dairy,… now what?
Found out a couple of weeks ago that Chloe is officially allergic to milk, she was given an ounce of cow’s milk and vomited for 2 hours. We also tried Vital Jr and that produced the same result. The feeding clinic is recommending Neocate Jr at this point but it tastes horrible and she will probably not eat it well. She is currently exclusively breastfed and I don’t eat any dairy but I don’t know how much longer that will last. Do you have to feed a one year old a cow milk based drink? Or can you switch to something like coconut milk or almond milk (assuming that you provide some sort of supplemental vitamins)?
Thanks,Nat
